A message from Mark Gerhard

Whoa! Where has all the time gone? The last two months have flown by and what a journey it has been so far.

When we released Old School we were unsure of the demand or what the future would hold. Two months later and things are still looking really solid! The community has actively driven the direction of Old School by taking part in six feature polls and deciding the fate of one hundred poll questions. You collectively decided to improve the chat system, you collectively decided to bring back the Easter 07 event but equally as importantly you decided not to bring back grimy herbs. Your decisions have and will continue to shape Old School Runescape into what you want it to be.

Of course, it’s not always plain sailing, we’ve seen bots and goldfarmers start to raise their filthy heads. Since launch we have been working hard on our anti-bot technology for Old School and those of you who read the recent Devblog will know that this is now up and running. The impact of this tech has been huge with tens of thousands of bots banned from the game freeing up areas like yew trees and blue dragons. As always it’s an arms race and there is still a way to go.

We saw a huge amount of players return to Old School when it first released. As we expected though, the amount of players who still play has started dropping off a little. We have always said that we will keep Old School open as long as there is enough interest and as things stand the future remains rather positive. If the community want to keep it healthy and vibrant YOU need to play your part too. Old School is more your game than it is ours, so please get involved in keeping it strong. Please do your part in encouraging your friends, family, old clan mates, even enemies! :) - any one you know who used to play - to come back and help support Old School RuneScape. The team love working on Old School, we know its special and you love playing it so we truly want this retro adventure to remain strong well in to the future.

No one expects you to find all the new players on your own so we have created Facebook , Google+ , Twitter and YouTube pages for you to interact with - or better yet create stories and videos of your epic adventures. The more content you create and share with your friends and the wider community, the easier it will be to find more friends, evangelize to new players and crucially keep Old School available for years to come.

On top of that there’s lot of exciting stuff happening in Old School RuneScape. The feature polls and game updates will continue, with yesterday’s release of F2P-style PK worlds being a massive boost to many players, as will be the reintroduction of rare items the community are currently deciding upon. The tools needed to develop new content are also currently in the works as are the restructuring of the forums – it’s a great time to be an Old School’er!

Old School RuneScape is your game, your community. Their successes are yours to control and enjoy. We will naturally help in as many ways as we can too in order to ensure Old School’s long term success, however the you are ultimately the driving force, sharing your positive experiences, helping new and old friends alike to get started again will always be more powerful, authentic and compelling than anything we can do as a games studio! It’s your responsibility to help create the game and social experience you want to see in years to come.

Thank you and have (Old School) Fun!

Cheers,

Mark Gerhard

Bringing back Old-school was certainly one of the best things you have implemented in Runescape in a long time for me. I enjoyed the old game play so much and was disappointed to watch it slowly disappear as Runescape began to develop. Now I and many others can re-visited what was missed most.

This is content that will not die Jagex. Something I feel very confident enough to say.

Good to see Macroers are slowly being dealt with, a tough one indeed.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for bring it back. :)

Many Thanks,

Dr Crowe.

I love that you guys are interacting with the players. With bots dropping the player count will be low. I would hate to lose this game and will continue to pay my membership fee when i can afford to.
There are alot of easy places to find bots if you were to take an ingame approach. never see jmods walking around anymore, i can see time restraints being the reason.

I know all mesages are ingame inbox but if there's anything more to be done let us know. The Runescape Community Supports.

I think this line:

'Of course, it’s not always plain sailing, we’ve seen bots and goldfarmers start to raised their filthy heads.'

Needs to be changed in some way, 'raised' doesn't really make sense. - Might be just me though.

Any ways, nice to have a new dev blog! :)

Thank you for inspirational words, the community has been a bit down lately, probably worried about the price increase if the player count drops too low so it's within reason.

Also can we please just have our own forums? The old shool forums?

I'm not gonna lie, the fact I along with multiple legit friends were banned with now quashed offences cause me to doubt the bot detection system.

Yes, I saw a major decrease yesterday with only 14,000 Online in the morning any hovering near 20,000 during the day. I assumed this is partially due to bans, but I can't seem that amount being removed from the online total. When we were originally seeing anywhere from 35,000 - 45,000 constantly online and peak periods between 50,000 - 60,000 during the first few weeks.

I believe the updates / poll questions are a major reason it's starting to lose a vast amount of players. Even the new F2P worlds can be viewed as a negative considering so little amounts of worlds were provided and too some that may be enough to lose interest and leave.

Would be nice that instead of polling what ever ideas you see in the threads you actually evaluate the positives and negatives to each person's idea and choose more wisely. Some of those questions for the RARE poll especially must honestly be a joke.

Even if the questions fail it still shows that these ridiculous questions have their way of making it into the polls. What's the point of offering the polls if it's not going to be taken seriously.

Also if you really would like this too flourish stop treating it like a simple add on. We need the following below content or this version will slowly die. The ** is optional and would just help.

-Our own forums built into the Old School Website.
-Our own registration systems on the Old School Website.
-Our own payment systems on the Old School Website.
-Separate membership systems so the games are truly separated and are not treated as a simple add on.
-Ability to post on the forums without 40 total level in main version of RuneScape.
-Ability to create an account without first logging into the main version of RuneScape.
-**The Old Low/High Detail Modes.
-**The Actual Free Player Base (Maybe even only in a few worlds).
