A message from Mark Gerhard
Whoa! Where has all the time gone? The last two months have flown by and what a journey it has been so far.
When we released Old School we were unsure of the demand or what the future would hold. Two months later and things are still looking really solid! The community has actively driven the direction of Old School by taking part in six feature polls and deciding the fate of one hundred poll questions. You collectively decided to improve the chat system, you collectively decided to bring back the Easter 07 event but equally as importantly you decided not to bring back grimy herbs. Your decisions have and will continue to shape Old School Runescape into what you want it to be.
Of course, it’s not always plain sailing, we’ve seen bots and goldfarmers start to raise their filthy heads. Since launch we have been working hard on our anti-bot technology for Old School and those of you who read the recent Devblog will know that this is now up and running. The impact of this tech has been huge with tens of thousands of bots banned from the game freeing up areas like yew trees and blue dragons. As always it’s an arms race and there is still a way to go.
We saw a huge amount of players return to Old School when it first released. As we expected though, the amount of players who still play has started dropping off a little. We have always said that we will keep Old School open as long as there is enough interest and as things stand the future remains rather positive. If the community want to keep it healthy and vibrant YOU need to play your part too. Old School is more your game than it is ours, so please get involved in keeping it strong. Please do your part in encouraging your friends, family, old clan mates, even enemies!
- any one you know who used to play - to come back and help support Old School RuneScape. The team love working on Old School, we know its special and you love playing it so we truly want this retro adventure to remain strong well in to the future.
No one expects you to find all the new players on your own so we have created Facebook , Google+ , Twitter and YouTube pages for you to interact with - or better yet create stories and videos of your epic adventures. The more content you create and share with your friends and the wider community, the easier it will be to find more friends, evangelize to new players and crucially keep Old School available for years to come.
On top of that there’s lot of exciting stuff happening in Old School RuneScape. The feature polls and game updates will continue, with yesterday’s release of F2P-style PK worlds being a massive boost to many players, as will be the reintroduction of rare items the community are currently deciding upon. The tools needed to develop new content are also currently in the works as are the restructuring of the forums – it’s a great time to be an Old School’er!
Old School RuneScape is your game, your community. Their successes are yours to control and enjoy. We will naturally help in as many ways as we can too in order to ensure Old School’s long term success, however the you are ultimately the driving force, sharing your positive experiences, helping new and old friends alike to get started again will always be more powerful, authentic and compelling than anything we can do as a games studio! It’s your responsibility to help create the game and social experience you want to see in years to come.
Thank you and have (Old School) Fun!
Cheers,
Mark Gerhard
