My main issue really is the potential inconvenience of constantly lighting the salt fires. When I think of salts in fire I think of a long lasting flame, something I can light once and go about my business. So the only way this would work for me is if the flames would last for quite some time, and would like to see much more permanent ones as well, such as permanent light sources for areas which require them.
Also, I think there's definitely some potential to incorporate cooking into this somehow. If you could find a way to make cooking while fishing actually efficient (opposed to dropping raw fish) that would be quite interesting. For example, some kind of spitroast which would allow you to deposit an inventory of raw food to be cooked, but you can run off and come back when its finished to collect your food and experience. Would take the same amount of time as normally cooking, but may provide reduced experience or other drawback.
Another concept not related to salts but could help boost firemaking - some sort of kindling pouch which would provide an infinite wood source for lighting fires, but provides no exp (or could simply charge it with logs instead). This could actually be useful because if players want to light a fire they dont need to bring an axe and locate the nearest tree, they've got it bundled right there with them.
Another - a reusable firelighter which would allow for very quick (same tick?) lighting of fires without animation, but for no or reduced exp. Again, would add to the convenience of getting a fire wherever you want it without making such a hassle.
