what about having a crew aboard the ship and being able to arm them with weapons and armor to create an item sink. the crew would die but respawn with these items. and the items wouldnt be able to be taken back

I'm all for that... I would love to arm my crewmembers with spare barrows sets I have gotten on Ironman account. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Should make 2 skills out of it. 1 being "Shipcraft" and the other being "Sailing" would be like Woodcut and Fletching or Mining and Smithing...would make things a bit more interesting if you need to train one to do the other :) just a thought

Obviously you would be able to buy Ships from other players or an NPC if you just wanted to train Sailing.

Has no one recommended this yet? and why not? It's the best idea yet. At least in my opinion it is :D

I think that the majority of the exp from sailing should come in a lump sum, such as dungeoneering did when completing a raid since the majority of people against sailing rather have a skill like dungeoneering. So why not somewhat apply some of the principles of dungeoneering into sailing?

Since jagex said that exploration will be random, I think much like dungeoneering was with random raids, never knowing which doors led to where, sailing should be something of the same. Requiring thieving, agility, smithing, etc. When you complete an exploration there is a lump sum of exp at the end.

Random event idea:
-invading sirens:
To warn you of the Event your chat box will say (you hear the alluring song in the distance, do you wish to follow the sound?)
If yes you start to turn your boat into mist to a small island of rocks where there are 3 sirens singing whom are trying to pull you into a whirlpool.

Your first task is to stop the sound with a louder sound, this is when you must go below deck to find a old device that makes noise then you must take it above deck and charge it with swamp tar. You need 10 tar and you revive it by running around the ship either searching walls, barrels, pickpocket in other crew or killing crab monsters whom are also starting to invade your ship and baby sirens.

Once your done and play the machine the sirens yell out in agony and a sea serpent appears in the whirlpool. While your spinning around the whirlpool you must shoot your cannon at the serpent, you must land 10 successful hits. Some will miss and others maybe hard to fire because you will have to set up the cannon similar as in the quest cabin fever except you must also dodge the serpents tail with 4 different abilitys that you can choose from. Picking the ability will be like in rs3 when fighting araxor and you have to use arrow key to dodge his attack each arrow key tho will be a different ability and will be random each event but will be shown on screen what arrow key is what so your not prepared pre event and have to remember what key is what before monster attacks making things a bit difficult.

When serpent is dead the whirlpool takes you back to where you were before event with sail xp, and slayer xp, chance to get the perm ability to travel back to the island to have sirens as a slayer task whom will drop items to help with the sailing skill/crafting/and construction. Also chance to receive a serpent hull override custom for your ships.

If you die you return to shore having to rebuild your ship. U die from 3 failed dodges.

Thanks for reading

I have given this a chance and read through the dev blog, but it's just not sending me that 'oldschool' vibe
.
I'd rather you guys focus on lore for the new continent. How about finishing the elvequests series in a different manner than RS3 did. This could be a great link to the new frontier.

Voting NO against the new skill, sorry.
