I hope navigation and exploration will not be just clicking on the minimap. I would like to see that we control the ship by steering the sail and rudder. Taking into account the wind. Because this is really where sailing is about.

I'am al** curious about the xp rates. Sailing is really exploring the seas. Only exploring the seas should give sailing xp in my opinion.

SAILING FTW! :)

Good ideas:

Implement the use of other skills with sailing
Smithing: Smith cannonballs (bronze to rune), Smith cannons themselvels (u need for example 60 sailing + 60 ranged to fire dragon cannonballs etc.)
Construction: use planks etc. when building ships or use planks when repairing ships if they are attacked
crafting: use crafting skills to craft a Sail (at higher levels of crafting you can make stronger sails) also use Crafting to craft other things in the ship like the head of the ship etc.
there should be a chest in the ship that can carry like 50 items or something and at higher levels of sailing it can contain more items and u need items to fix the ship if its breaking or to store food etc.

Like ive said so many times, just add sailing without polling.

So just so we're clear... It was okay for people to vote no on Artisian, because you weren't a fan. But you want Sailing to be non-polled because you like the idea?

Ah yes, the typical RS player.

The skill truly doesn't sound fun.

It is a middle man money-sink skill.

It's a skill used to get you to new locations (which, if they were so interested in releasing new islands, they could have just given them high mage level teleports to get to)... and it's trained using materials from other skills.

It's basically construction by the shore line... You all really want another skill that is going to be half skill, half mini game and probably cost 500M+ for 1-99?

Mods always talk in their live chat about wanting a gold sink in the game... if you people can't see this for what it is, than I'm not shocked with the way polls have gone in the past.

Voting no. Not out of bitterness, not out of anger, not out of "hate" for the people who like it... but because I think Artisian was a better skill than this, and it received a no vote. If we're going to be stingy about what skills get in, and vote out Artisian (Which had limitless potential), then I'm not going to vote in a gag skill that somehow is attempting to become live content.

Don't like the concept of 5 man sailing, either.

I`m still undecided whether or not I like the idea of sailing so far.

No...it`s not that I am completly against this idea, it`s just that certain things don`t sound right to me.
As some people mentioned before, it sounds a bit like farming: you start the build, do something else in the mean time and then return to collect your exp.
However, this isn`t really my main concern - I like the farming skill, if it bears a few similarities then this is okay to me. Just as long it`s not TOO similar.

A much bigger problem I have is that you don`t build the ship yourself but let your workers do it for you.
I don`t think you should gain any exp. from building in that case - after all, what did you (your character) do? He/She just tells some NPC workers to build it for you. So why should YOU gain exp.? No, I think you should build the ships yourself...nothing speaks against workers HELPING you every now and then, but your character should do the main part of building.
Also, the building part should rather give exp. in construction - so far you did*`t sail anywhere, you just build a ship.

The biggest problem however, is the fact that it seems more like a minigame (at least the building part) and a minigame should not be made into a skill (while I like Player owned Ports in RS3, I would probably hate it, if it would be a skill instead of a minigame)
If you really make this minigame-like and call it a skill, then it will be much like dungeoneering in my eyes. And I hate dungeoneering because of that fact..again, I probably would like Dung. if it were a minigame, but it just doesn`t qualify as a skill.
So please, don`t turn this into a 2007-Dungeoneering clone! Please!

Now for the the actual sailing part...the idea of exploring new areas and islands by sailing your ship. This DOES sound great. As long you can actually access the islands with your character (and not just interact with them indirectly like in player owned ports)

(continued)

While they're adding in sailing without polling it, toss in EOC without polling it (end results would be the same).

Again however, the sailing should involve your character actively steering the ship (as the captain) and not just sitting there while his/her crew explores the route to unknown lands for him/her, while he/she sits back at the port, taking a nap or something.
This goes especially for the first time you travel somewhere - you don`t know the seas in that area yet, so keep your eyes open for all kinds of threats on your journey.
And if you don`t pay attention to where you`re sailing...well, you end up like in most Fishing Trawler games, your ship sever*y damaged and in need of repair before you can head out to the sea again.

I am just not a friend of gaining exp. by doing little to nothing, you and your character should play a MUCH more active part in the entire skill.

If you can do this, then I will totally support the sailing skill.
Turn it into a minigame/dungeoneering clone and I will vote against it, if we get the chance to vote!

I'm still saying no to this. Sailing was always a joke idea, not real. I would much rather you get on with summoning skill than this crap.

Not enough thought is going into this, the final result wont please everyone, It's just not good.

As you can see from the recent blogs, neither summoning or dungeoneering will see the light of day on Old School. You can let that pipe dream die now. =)
