I am just not a friend of gaining exp. by doing little to nothing, you and your character should play a MUCH more active part in the entire skill.
I'm up for a mix.
Maybe a quick travel option that gives no exp (or a tiny amount like agility shortcuts) and travels as if you were chartering a ship (only to places you have sailed to before) Meaning that the skill isn't incredibly slow as a travel option.
And an active travel option which takes active control and time. But also yields experience and the sailing events like discovering underwater caverns.

I think its Important we make no sailing level quest requirements, that will unhelp the quest cape & the way its ment to be if we keep doing things like that your going to need 97 crafting for quest cape.
I would be very interested in a lot of pirate content. A pirate ship, pirate costumes, pirate rewards and possibly pirate pvp content. I just love pirate stuff!
Sailing ships should be the only method of gaining Sailing experience. It'd be silly if somebody could just sit in a port and level Sailing by building ships... that'd be like getting Mining experience whenever you did Smithing. An alternate method of leveling Construction would be nice...
Overall I don't like the idea of sailing as a new skill. However, I think they could make it fun if they added some things to it. For example, I think every skill has at least one quest to go with it. Sailing, or any new skill, should get some related quests.
do u need 87 slayer to slay a kraken at sea? and also will there b new slayer creatures at sea? mayb octopuses? mayb a giant fish of some sort? and wat kind of attacks will u have to defend against? pirates? sharks? etc. etc.

I don't think it's going to pass. People want Oldskool to stay Old School. People are going to vote NO. Even though some of my friends are voting YES, I'll be voting NO.
