Sailing was suggested and discussed about ten years before there was a picture on the website that people made a joke out of.
Lets not forget that before a dragon kiteshield or dragon platebody were added to RS3, they were asked for for many years, and Jagex made joke items you could get from Diango of them before the real ones were added to the game.
Making a joke about an item players want in game before making the real item has been a recurring theme in RuneScape for a long time.
Players ask for a much wanted piece of content for years. Jagex makes an April fools joke in game about the content. Then Jagex makes the actual content the players have wanted for many years.
Sailing is a form of transportation, but it is also much more.
Sailing allows for exploration of islands and the possibility of reaching new continents.
PVP sea battles are possible. Fishing, deep sea diving, lost underwater cities, sunken ships, sea monsters, diplomacy, mini quests where you hunt down pirate ships, or fight other NPC ships like skeletons, zombies, ghost ships, are possible.
Every skill can benefit from sailing. New training and resource areas can be added, as well as new items and new peoples and NPCs and plants, which would not have fit on the current map.
Jagex can constantly add new islands with new content, with new areas to explore.
We could bring people, plants and animals to an island and start a new colony.
New Treasure Trails could be added.
Really, its near limitless what can be done with Sailing.
I'm looking forward to more ideas and seeing the skill developed.
Building ships I don't think should give Sailing XP, I think shipwright should give construction XP, making sails and figureheads crafting or fletching XP, and maybe magic or prayer for enchanting and blessing figureheads. Smithing XP for making anchors, chains, portholes, cannonballs, spears, etc.
