As I read the front page, article, and then the actual Dev Blog, I kept insisting to myself
'Okay, it's a weird time to be making some sort of strange April Fool's joke, but just go with it I guess...'
and now the ever-deepening knot in my stomach and sense of disgust was actually proven right by the fact they want to do this, and seriously expect it to pass a poll.
Sailing.
Sailing.
The joke skill that had been the laughing stock of players and staff alike in the main game for years, probably on the same level of stupidity as horses and mounts in RuneScape. If I'm not mistaken the Sailing skill was
literally
an April Fools' joke one year too.
But no, the OSRS Team actually wants to push for it. God help us.
I have had a slight change of heart when it comes to Sailing. After thinking about it I have decided I will vote "Yes" and support this skill IF:
1) PvP is indeed not forced. That means high level rewards will not be hidden behind PvP territory lines and EXP rates will not be highest within PvP territories. Literally no benefit from PvP other than the joy of slaying other players and looting their items.
2) 100% Solo-able skill. EXP rates should not be higher within groups. The only benefit of having someone come along should be the extra damage against new monsters/bosses.
OLD SCHOOL RuneScape doesn't need any NEW skills. I can understand pets, because they don't change anything fundamental with the game. I can tolerate new bosses for similar reasons. But a new skill crosses the line for me.
I see a lot of people happy over Rigour and Augury being potentially added when all they are is a carrot-on-a-stick to try and trick you into voting Yes for this awful skill. Similarly with the whole "new areas" silliness.
Ask for these things on their own and don't let the OSRS Team get away with consistently selling us packaged deals where we're basically forced to accept massive changes if we want the slightest bit of new content.

This seems to be the general response, since this thread has gotten a lot more positive over time.
While some people argue that this update harms the nostalgia factor of osrs, you really need updates like this one to recreate the feeling of your first time logging on or having a members account and exploring rather than just repeating optimised grinding loops.

So you don't accept new weapons either?

There was a big IF you cut out though. I will be just as negative as everyone else if I am not reassured I am not about to be forced into hostile territory in order to benefit from this update. Also, I don't want to be forced into grouping up to efficiently level this skill.
I'd actually come back and play if Dungeoneering or something similar got added into the game that was by far my all time favorite skill to do with friends before it became a leech fest. Sailing sounds like a complete joke. Summoning would ruin the integrity of the game making everything easier.
For real all those comments about Summoning and Dungeoneering? Go to EoC if u really need them , imo Sailing sounds interesting hope it pass the poll really
