I've never thought of Treasure Hunter as an annoying microtransaction thing. I log on each day, I get some free keys. Where does that involve paying for anything?
Sure, it is possibile to buy extra keys, and it is true that some of the prizes you get with them are useful in the game. Still, compared to the loot boxes in other games, apparently it is handled with much more restraint.
With RunePass, one feels like one is missing out on something if one doesn't participate. So it is intrusive, and I'd rather not have it around, but I'm definitely willing to put up with it, if it's what RuneScape needs to survive.
The first year of Spring Fayre, I made the effort to attend the Happy Hours, and that let me gain the XP I wanted from the event - after complaints, though, they dropped the revenue grab the next year.
Jagex needs revenue. I accept that. The best way is to bring in more players, but that's not under their control.
Of course, MTX makes the game less appealing, so it is not unreasonable to fear a downward spiral.
Radical changes to the game to make it more appealing to new players could devalue existing achievements in the game, leading to an EoC-like reaction - which is really bad when the expected arrival of new players doesn't happen.
And then there's DarkScape. It was well-loved by many, as it made PvP work, but not enough people were interested for it to thrive. Is there any way to learn from that to add an attractive feature to RS3?
