Thanks, Mexk, for your carefully crafted and considered post. We need these sorts of discussions, and we need them here on the central forums, not just scattered all over in other places.

My primary issue with TH has always been the semi-random nature of it. I like to know for sure what I'm getting when I spend RL cash. The "grab bag" nature of TH always rubbed me the wrong way. So in that respect, I prefer RP over TH. I think it's better for players and for the game overall.

As with anything new, RP needs some tweaking, and people need time to adjust to it. Many of us came upon it "cold" with no prior knowledge, insight, or understanding of it. My first thought was, WTF? Are You Kidding Me? But once I researched it and came to understand its function, I began to warm up to it.

And I absolutely agree that more transparency on MTX would help us better understand and support their efforts. Lacking that transparency & discussion, we are left to assume that they just want more money and don't really care how they get it or how we feel about it - which I don't think is true. At least, I hope not.

Again, thanks for the opportunity to consider this topic and all the responses!

But frankly, what do you expect them to "address" at this stage? They said Ocean Bounty is an EXPERIMENT. Nothing is concrete at this stage. The only thing any Jmod said was no TH promotion the first week of Ocean Bounty, and added "no. it doesn't carry into the 2nd week". They are doing everything as they said. They said nothing else regarding TH whatsoever. So nothing there to address.

I am not the OP you asked the above to, but since that post agreed with mine, I will take the liberty to respond with my thoughts on the matter. I have a number of long-overdue things, some of which I will summarise below, I feel Jagex ought to address candidly as soon as possible. I need to accentuate, however, that the one thing I want the most is to see Jagex actively engage in a constructive and honest two-way dialogue with the community at large about what ultimately is the future of RuneScape.

Mexk, I believe some Fmod, it might even be you (correct me if I am wrong please) has made a similar post in the Website and Forum demanding commnications and transparency from Jagex. As a result of that, the Community Partners people came into existence just to facilitate such conversions in a more time efficient way. Am I correct? If not, please correct me, otherwise, may I ask what is this already established solution a problem?

Besides, do you really think Jagex as a business do not put players as the consumers into considerations? They ran polls a lot more often now. Just that they may not have the time to post in the forums. However, they do a lot in Twitch and Tweeter, and occasionally in Reddit, and seemingly that's their preferred ways. But honestly can you say only users in the forums are players that Jagex need to communicate with?

I think we forum users have gone through this kind of conversations in the Website forums, haven't we?

"To Average Joes, RunePass is not very appealing. But to Busy Bees, RunePass is nice."

Even some Busy Bees don't like the idea of RunePass. It depends on the Bee, TBH.

And some of us don't care for the idea of first buying a membership, then having to pay more (even if we use in-game gp) to unlock tasks that we have to complete in order to get the rewards we paid to unlock .

This promo has had me seriously reconsider re-upping Gold Premier next year. I've enjoyed it for the two years I've had it, but if this gets added on top of that, I'll revert to regular monthly renewals so that I can quit at the drop of a hat without having thrown a year's membership payment away. And I know others who feel the same way.

Meanwhile, the 5 paltry "free path" rewards aren't worth it. I accidentally claimed the first one when I had no intention of doing so--since all xp I gain in the game is forced participation in this event whether I will or no (unlike the bingo cards, which I can ship to Diango and ignore); I was trying to find a way to see how many "starfish" I had accumulated, as they're not tracked in the currency pouch (which, TBH, they should be). So at this point, not shelling out for the gold path and not claim the free path rewards are the only method I have of protesting RP and still play the game, I'd like to keep my cosmetics collection unsullied with anything from RP. The only other way I could protest is to NOT PLAY AT ALL, but since I do have Prem Gold mems, I'm not gonna waste the in-game time I have paid for.

If I could get that shieldbow override reversed out of my claimed rewards, I would. I'll never use it. (Side note: If the Ninjas would, in fact, work up a way for us to delete items out of our cosmetics we'll never use so we don't have to scroll past them every time we decide to make a change, it would be greatly appreciated. I'd clean house.)

That's correct. Fortnite is hot this year and they are doing Season Pass so that Pass becomes a focal point of a lot of players. However, DoTA had the very similar Pass going for years and Steam put the DoTA2 (a one year long season instead of 2 or 3 months) Pass into back burner in 2016, apparently due to fading interests. We'll see how well Season Pass holds up for Fortnite next year. :)

Form what I see, a 2 or 3 month RunePass season will wear out and eventually kill even the most hard working bees. I have to say I do enjoy a 5-6 day Bingo Card events but anything longer than that is just too taxing. Besides, the Bingo Cards events actually promote in game engagements like minigame participations but this RunePass challenges of "obtain 5,000,000 xp to level up" are just too silly. :D :D :D

Today I saw 27k players rs3 in peak hours. If players who buy th keys quit that profit goes down the drain. Th becomes useless once you don't care about xp anymore, it doesen't need to be 5.4b. The only way to make th better currently is adding more uses, causing more players to quit. Fortnite, despite being f2p, Makes 50x more profit then runescape. You can make players happy while making profit, not only that, you can profit even more with more players. More players = more profit. While I just typed this an ironman reached level 120 all skills. Ironman can't use th nor any mxt items except for cosmetics. I need my blue charms back.

Just want to note that the outcries regarding MTX have already died down. Despite there being no official statement. And while we now clearly see a Second chance Tuesday promotion run on top of runepass. While I suspected both to happen, the speed surprised me.

On one hand it means this will remain an serious issue for the long term health of the game. But I guess on the other hand there is some good to this in that people rather like to focus on the nice things (such as the passion of both the community and developers for improving and releasing new content), instead of just focusing on the MTX scheme.

It definitely does not fix the MTX, but I prefer to play the game for fun.

Epic Games’ Fortnite generated $296 million in the month of April across mobile, console, and PC platforms... what really makes Fortnite shine, is Epic’s free-to-play model, which gets the title into as many players’ hands as possible and recoups the money, and then some, by way of in-game purchases. Epic sells players cosmetic items that do not affect gameplay, including goofy and topical character costumes and in-game dance moves purely for vanity purposes. It also sells a season subscription called the Battle Pass for around $10.

Jagex could've gone down this path and been successful at it years ago. Instead, they chose to take ALL of the paths (except the one where they make good game content for free), which just resulted in barely any players left and they have to rely on whales now. It's probably too late to right the ship because old players are unlikely to come back and new players don't want to join a behemoth decades old game that is overflowing with pay to win mechanics (even if they stopped these instantly, that's some gap to bridge with XP and gold buyers).

Mexk, what I find truly ironic is that you, of all people, would have written a thread like this. What I found most unbelievable was the introduction of Premier Club Memberships and that people would opt for that in the first place.

(...)

I appreciate where you are coming from, and I arguably did mention tiered membership packages in my own posts explicitly. I understand how the fact that I happen to have purchased Premier Club myself might appear hypocritical, though I think it is important to keep in mind that I merely included it in a list seeking to highlight the vast amount of monetisation models currently available, and not necessarily to single it out.

In regards to the suggested hypocrisy, I happen to be one of those who tend to purchase 6- or 12-month packages for my subscriptions as is. Premier Club is thus a very neat product for someone like me, and one which I would have purchased even if nothing but the reduced membership price was offered. I completely agree that the additional, non-cosmetic items are questionable and have directly impacted the meta. I would argue, however, that the Premier Club system, if focused on cosmetics only, is anything but harmful to the long-term health of the game!
