From the latest Superdata report on video game sales:
"As the free-to-play business model continues to take mindshare in the industry, publishers seem more open to significantly lowering unit prices for catalogue AAA franchises in order to expand the player base. EA’s Sims 4 and Take-Two’s NBA2K19, two franchises that benefit immensely from add-on content purchases, both saw huge spikes in unit sales after prices were brought down below $5."

Of course, free-to-play is dominating the marketplace as MTX drives their growth. Everybody and their moms are cutting price on,or even totally removing, box purchases and subscription has turned from single game to monthly subscription of a big basket of games like EA Origin and Google Stadia and such. That means MTX is even more important for a single game to survive.
Of course, we players vote with our wallets and guess who was the King of video game revenue last month we voted for?
Drum Roll.... Of course it i the heavily MTX, particularly loot boxes "infested" FIFA 19 followed by CoD: Black Ops 4.
