They met again in the open space again, and Mor*ran changed his rapier back into his buster sword. Then he charged again at Hining, who feigned taking out the scimitar again, but instead threw more throwing knives at him, in addition to charging. Mor*ran however was ready this time, and with unbelievable skill stuck his buster sword straight through the middle of the knife, and towards Hining.

Surprised, Hining ducked backwards, sliding right besides Mor*ran and behind him. Mor*ran then turned around and raised his sword to deal the final blow. Hining though reacted quickly, and with both his leg and fighting arm, leaped up, causing the buster sword to leave Mor*ran’s hand high into the air.

Then Hining attacked the weapon-less Mor*ran in a fury with both his weapons. Mor*ran however ducked all of these attacks with his body while remaining in full composure. Then he ran out of Hining’s way and ran up a tree, doing a backwards leap in the air to claim his falling sword. Hining reached Mor*ran’* leg a second before he could reach the sword, and threw him on the floor nearby, catching the sword himself.

Although grinning for a half a second, Hining realized now how heavy the buster sword actually was, and lagged because of it. Mor*ran then took Hinnigs hand, and flipped him on the ground, reclaiming his sword. Then he slashed his sword against the ground, but Hining moved out the way, and got up again.

Then they fought again head on, but Mor*ran’s attacks were slower and less focused this time, so Marshall Hining was able to catch up. They clashed fifty more times, with no signs of a victor. Mor*ran now reached for his own belt, and Hining retreated, for seconds later several crystal spikes came out of Mor*ran’s hand.

Then Mor*ran charged against Hining, and with all his might slashed his buster sword vertically towards him. Hining crossed his sword and crystal scimitar to defend the attack, but was forced down on his knees trying to withhold it. “It is over.” said Hining, noticing now in this stalemate that Mor*ran’s sword was beginning to crack.

Mor*ran noticed it too, but pressed on, hoping that Hining’s defense would eventually fail. Then suddenly, Mor*ran had an epiphany. *I’m afraid you are wrong, Marshall Hining.” he said, looking into Hining’s eyes as the cracks spread further along the sword. “You’ve fought bravely, but it is you who will die today.”

Confused, Hining now noticed that the grip was getting stronger, and looking now at the sword, saw that crystal vines were growing out of it and into his own weapons. The three weapons were now locked into place. Hining could not move himself or his weapons, and once he realized what Mor*ran was doing, it was too late.

Mor*ran touched the lower end of his buster sword with his other hand, and created a small sword from inside of it while making the buster sword smaller. Then, before Hining could react, he quickly slashed the small sword against Hining’s chest, making a deep wound.

Hining let go, and fell backwards on the floor, coughing blood. The weapons now fell too, as Mor*ran’s grip was weakened. Mor*ran was weak, but once he had gone to inspect Hining, he realized that Hining was beyond saving now; the battle was won.

The buster sword had completely broken now. It was well known that crystals that cracked could never be used again, and he frowned. However, Essyllt’s scimitar still looked still usable, and Mor*ran removed it from the lock, preparing to cut off Marshall Hining’s head.

At that very moment though, he heard shouts, and two or three arrows passed his way. Cursing, Mor*ran remembered about the other soldiers, and left Hining to go look for Essyllt. “There is no way he is surviving that wound anyway, so my job is done.” he thought.

When he found Essyllt, he saw that the dagger was still stuck in his hand. Mor*ran quickly opened up the top of his armor, and cut off a piece of his garment. Then, warning Essyllt when he was going to remove the dagger, he removed the dagger in a fast swoop, and quickly tied around the garment around Essyllt’s hand to prevent any bleeding. Essyllt cried out loudly when he had done this, and they heard the enemy now rushing their way.

When they mounted the yak, the enemy had appeared. Many arrows came their way, but Mor*ran ignored them, using his remaining crystals to create a barrier. Then they rode on east, far away from the enemy. “We are safe now, Essyllt. There are no more enemies this way. We will make it back to the main camp safely.”

After some moments, Essyllt said, “And what of the others?”

“I have brought some soldiers with me, and they are helping any survivors make their way back east. Although sadly I do not think there are many.*

*I see.* Essyllt closed his eyes. After they had travelled some further distance, he said, “Stop the yak, Morv. I’m getting off here.” Mor*ran looked confused, but did*’t say anything. Then Essyllt repeated again some more times, more sharply now. *Stop it. NOW.*

Mor*ran stopped the yak. *What are you saying, Essyllt?”

“I’m not going back to the camp. I’ve decided, Morv.” He answered. *Lord Iorwerth said that if I failed, he did not want to see me again. If I go back, it will be a death sentence, Morv. Four hundred soldiers I have sent with me on this campaign and less than forty at best I return. Even if I will not have the death sentence, how can I ever face Lord Iorwerth - or anyone for that matter - ever again?”

Mor*ran tried to reason with him, and promised that he would try and get him out of any harsh penalty on return. Essyllt shook his head gravely, and said no. “I am sorry, Mor*ran, but this is goodbye. I wish you the greatest of luck, for you were my closest friend. As much as this all pains me, I am glad that you were able to save me and that we were with each other at the very end. Farewell.” And with that, Essyllt jumped off the yak, and made his way.

Mor*ran wanted to go after him, but then decided against it. Gloomily, he stood there on the yak without moving, and looked at the crystal scimitar. Remembering now, he ran after Essyllt, calling his name. “This is yours.” he said, handing over the scimitar. “Thank you.” said Essyllt, now with tears in his eyes. The two friends now parted ways, never to see each other again.

Thus ended the battle at the Isafadarian Hills, with the crushing defeat of Lieutenant General Essyllt’s army. All in all, 363 of the 400 Iorwer*hian soldiers, and 479 of the 1200 Tyras soldiers were killed in battle.

~~~~~~~
“Thirty seven survivors! Thirty seven!” It was 2:30 in the morning, and Lord Iorwerth stood at the head of the war tent. Surrounding him were all the commanders of his army, including High General Iban, High General Glouphire, General Xendiu, Head Mourner Erisday, Commander Mor*ran, Commandment Lyana, and others including the survivors Sub-commander Caucus, and Sub-commander Valis.
“I would understand if there were a hundred casualties, even at most two, if it meant a victory! But this - this is unacceptable!” continued Lord Iorwerth, in upmost rage.
Several of those present, including General Xendiu and Commander Mor*ran attempted to calm him, but he would not listen. “I should never have allowed Essyllt to go on this campaign. It was not my intent, and his skills as a commander were questionable. Curse him! I demand that twenty soldiers go out and look for him, and bring to me his head.”
Mor*ran pleaded again, but Lord Iorwerth did not listen to him. “I am sorry Mor*ran. You are a brilliant soldier, and one of keen mind, but I cannot grant to that traitor any leniency after what he is done. My order is absolute; I will not change my mind.”
So saying, the order was carried out. Head Mourner Erisday then said, “Indeed, the news has yet to be broken to the public. The soldiers need time to mourn for the dead, and it will only pain them more if we withhold this information from them any longer.”
“Yes, I understand.” said Iorwerth, and so saying gave Erisday and Lyana the order to break the news. They both excused themselves and left the tent.
“So what do we do now? Do we go and war with the Tyras men, this late at night?” it was Valis who spoke.
“No.* said General Xendiu. “I’ve sent some soldiers ahead, and it appears that they have moved farther west. Besides, as you say, it is very late at night, and now what our soldiers need it rest. The important battle is the one first thing in the morning.”
“I agree.” said Lord Iorwerth. “Although neither our soldiers nor Hining’s will sleep easy tonight. Marshall Hining - for he had been promoted the very morning - is dead, by Mor*ran’s hand.”
All those present were surprised and congratulated Mor*ran, including High General Glouphrie, who tapped him notoriously on his back, to Mor*ran’s annoyance.
“Mor*ran also dropped us a package that will ensure things go as planned. For although this ending was completely undesirable, Arianwyn will with no doubt go on the defensive now as planned. Now, I am tired, so I will have all the details written down and handed to me in a report. I will excuse myself now, so I can in turn mourn for those lost to us today.*
*As will we.” said the assembly, as it was disbanded.
Lord Iorwerth closed the drapings behind him. He walked to his dining quarter, and sat down to eat, where the food, served hours ago, was waiting for him. He had been extremely busy in the last few days, and did not eat since yesterday. Even still he lost his appetite now, and couldn’t force himself to eat.
It was a few minutes later when the draping at the other side of the room were opened, and Lady Iorwerth entered the tent room. She moved as if there was a great burden on her, but it appeared that she was used to it.
“Brother, why are you so forlorn? You have not touched any of your food, and you sit there as if you were a statue.”
Lord Iorwerth grunted lightly, almost angrily. “Essyllt failed the mission I have sent him on. With four hundred he has left, and with thirty seven has returned. Two of those thirty seven are not even present, for they are high commanders, and they are being held prisoner by the Tyras.*
*That indeed is sad news.” she said, sitting down on the other end of the table.
“But let us not speak of such things.” said Lord Iorwerth, clearly not in a state to further the discussion. “I have news concerning you. Emil, who previously served Commander Erheian, has been reassigned to you new head servant. He is quite skilled from what I have heard, and is an expert in medicine.”
“I do not need any medicine.” she said, looking away.
“Yes, yes you do. You are sometimes quite not well sister, if I must remind you. Also, I have getting anxious about some things, and have decided that during tomorrow’s war I will station ten guards by your tent. Unless that does not suit you?..”
“I am interested in knowing whether these guards are intended for keeping the enemy out, or for keeping me inside.” she said.
“Your answers sadden me, sister. Tell me, do you still cling to the past, do you still ignore my words and wishes?”
“You are a fool.” she said. “I have never agreed with your plans, and I never will. But neither will I try to stop you. You are still my brother, and it is not my place to stand against you.”
“And yet you stand against me in your heart and in your words.” spat Lord Iorwerth.
“I will not deny that.” said Lady Iorwerth.
Lord Iorwerth gloomily poked a piece of chicken with his fork, and eventually decided upon eating it. “It does not matter anymore. How long we have waited, and the day is finally upon us. Tomorrow, if my plans succeed - no, they will succeed! - the Dark Lord will return. And when he does, the world will forever be changed, and you will come to your senses. This I assure you.”
“The Dark Lord will not return, and even if it does, it will be you who comes to his senses, not I.”
Lord Iorwerth started getting angry. “How many times have we had this discussion! I come to my tent after a humiliating defeat, and as usual, in your impertinence you throw my cause into the dirt and spit upon it!”
“Your cause was always doomed to fail. Can any cause be just, if so many oppose it? I do not think so. Your intentions may be pure, but you do not know what you are dealing with. The Dark Lord is dangerous; it is not to be trusted. And even if it is, the world you propose, the World of Isolation, is no place anyone would want to live in.”
“The other clans had left our lands to serve in the Great Wars. And with that they had only brought destruction and misery upon themselves and their brothers. The gods and the eastern lands they seek to conquer are dangerous, and no good will come of having any association with them.”
“You are the one who is dangerous! You claim that you are making a better world for everyone, but in doing so, you have killed and continue to kill many of our brothers and sisters. Do you think that Seren would want that?”
Furious, Iorwerth stood up from his chair, followed by his sister. “It is for the greater good. Should I sit here and let the darkness consume the world and destroy it and all its inhabitants? I will take as many lives as I can, if it means I can prevent all lives from being lost. There is nothing that will stop me, and if it means shutting out the other clans until the ends of time itself, that I will do.”
“You say that I need medicine, but perhaps it is you who needs it, brother. For if you only listened to your words, you would realize they are words of a madman.”
Lord Iorwerth slapped his sister on her cheek. She took it silently, and Lord Iorwerth now picked up her chin and looked hatefully into her eyes. “Do you hate me sister?” he asked.
“You killed him.. you killed my husband. And then you put me in invisible bonds and held me since as your prisoner. How could I not hate you?” Tears came from her eyes as she shook her head and looked away.
“It saddens me to hear that.” said Lord Iorwerth coldly. “It appears that I have many more enemies that I originally thought. Even now my two High Generals plot against me! But I suppose that is a sign of the end of all things. I am prepared for anything at this point. Nothing can stop me or get in my way.”
And so saying, Lord Iorwerth left the tent. It was three in the morning, and there were five hours left till the war.
