“Essyllt did*’t return immediately after speaking with you, sir. Apparently, he and his troops came across more survivors, and that’s why it took them some time. Five or
so of his guard left to find some others as well, but they haven’t returned yet.”

“I’ll send some troops to go and look for them, in case they turn out to be trouble in the future.” said Kai. “For now though our victory is assured. We have taken all their concealment crystals, and have taken Commander’s Artus and Iestin as hostages.

“The enemy is evacuating southeast of the camp. We have commanded them to circle around the camp you have captured and return immediately to Iorwerth’s main camp. If they do not do this, the second beacon will be lit, and you have the authority to kill all officials in the camp, starting with Lieutenant General Essyllt. This I have made clear to them.”

“Understood.” So saying, Colonel Ace deactivated the crystal, and sat down on a large rock in front of Essyllt and his officers, who were now tied to some trees.

“So what now?* spat Essyllt. “We will just wait here until my soldiers pass around us? And then what? Will you take me and my officers to your camp to be executed?”

“You have got it quite backwards my friend.” laughed Rod****, the soldier whom had held Essyllt at knife-point, and originally tricked him. *Iorwerth will be enraged when he hears of your defeat, and no doubt will truly this time send an army of a thousand against us. You will all be valuable hostages to us in this circumstance. Now, as for the evacuating troops..” he looked hesitantly at the Colonel now.

Ace, never once shifting his gaze from Lieutenant Essyllt, crossed his arms and said, “I suppose we can tell you, since there is nothing you can do at this point to stop it.

The beacon Kai set up wasn’t just for us; it was there for the soldiers we left at the southern decoy camp as well. When your soldiers pass by those hills, ours will come out of hiding and attack. Weakened, and without their concealment crystals, your army will quickly fall apart.”

“No!* cried Essyllt.

“This is a dirty trick,” said Valis, who was tied to a tree adjacent to Essyllt’s, “You allowed our troops to escape back to their main camp, but hide men in your hills with intent to slaughter them.”

“We have men hiding everywhere, not just those hills.* replied Ace. “It is nonsensical to let your troops pass by when our men are there and can dispatch of them easily. Besides, Iorwerth soliders were always known to be stubborn. Without a doubt they would come and try to free you all, regardless of our threats.”

They did not talk much afterwards, but waited silently in the camp. Two or three of Essyllt’s soldiers had tried to escape, but they were shot down by Ace’s men. Otherwise, nobody tried to escape, and Essyllt did not say a word.

It was twenty minutes later when they had heard the first sounds of shouting and battle to the southwest. “Alas, so it was true.” said Essyllt sadly. “Twice I have attacked the Tyras men, and twice I have lost. Many of my remaining soldiers have been captured, and the rest killed, or now soon to be. Even if I survive or escape, I cannot ever return to face Lord Iorwerth again.”

“Do not be disheartened, Lieutenant General.” said Caucus. “For if my eyes do not deceive me, I see a great mist coming from the east. They appear to be soldiers, and they have come to free us!”

Alarmed at this, the Colonel looked to the east, and saw vaguely through the fog what appeared to be horde of soldiers - perhaps as many as a thousand strong - rushing towards them with their weapons raised.

“Impossible.” he said. But then he remembered about the concealment crystals and his own word of Iorwerth’s sure attack after learning on Essyllt’s defeat. “Everyone stop what you are doing and retreat immediately! Take the few yaks left here and head northwest!” he shouted.

Seeing the army coming to their rescue, the elven troops who weren’t tied stood up against the dozen or so enemy troops. This proved to the Tyras men not to be a big deal though, as they hid the elves weapons, and by the time the elven soldiers had reached for them, most of the Tyras men were gone.

About to leave on a yak he took, the Colonel suddenly remembered about the communication crystal he left on the rock. Returning, he saw an elf attempt to take it, but he stuck his spear through the elve’s hand as he attempted to reach it, and took the crystal, shattering it with his hands.

Seeing the still tied Essyllt grind his teeth, Ace smiled wickedly, and retreated once more. This time several arrows came his way, but he was able to dodge all of them, and safely escape.

Now the elven soldiers cut Essyllt’s bonds, and those of the rest of the officers, and asked him whether they should pursue the enemy. “No.* said Essyllt. “Now that Iorwerth has sent us more soldiers, we will have more than enough time to deal a proper blow on Marshal Hining. Though I am surprised that those we sent to Iorwerth have made it and convinced him.”

Raising their flags, they eagerly awaited the army that approached from the east. However, after they had come closer, the army seemed to shrink, as if by magic. *What is going on?” asked Essyllt nervously as the numbers of soldiers appeared to decrease exponentially.

Then suddenly Caucus understood, but kept silent. Once the soldiers coming to their aid had entered the camp, Essyllt and the others had realized that there were no more than fifteen in their entire group. Seeing Arziel and four others of his guard among them, Essyllt ran up to them, and asked them how they pulled off such a feat.

“We will talk about it on our way east to the main camp, but now we must go before the enemy realizes that they have been tricked.” said Arziel.

“East? But my soldiers are out there fighting are we speak, and my commanders and officers held hostage!” said Essyllt enraged.

“I’m afraid there is nothing we can do for them, Lieutenant General. If you go and try to save them, you will lose the few lives you have saved here today. We have been hiding and examining the enemy troops for some time; they are everywhere, hiding in the hills and forests, and even in underground passages. You must escape immediately if you value your life and those of your soldiers.

Essyll turned to Valis and Caucus for advice, and to his dismay, they both agreed with Arziel. After some slient moments, he meekly agreed, and ordered everyone to abandon camp.

They abandoned most of their belongings there, taking only what they needed. Those who were too weak to stand went on the few yaks they had left, but most had to make their way on foot. As they escaped east, Essyllt finally felt safe, and he asked Arziel again about where he had been, and how he pulled off his illusion.

“These ten soldiers that came with us are the survivors that we were informed about and saved. However, there were still some enemy troops hiding about in that region, and so we made a detour and went the long way around. Then we decided to return to where Caucus had broke the barrier to see if there were any leftover chucks of concealment crystals on the floor, and to our surprise, there were enough to go around.

“Then we saw from afar that your camp was captured, and so we thought up of a plan. We returned to the decoy camp and picked up a large amount of fallen crystal weapons. Then, positioning ourselves east of the camp (where Iorwerth’s soldiers would attack from), we transformed all of these weapons into mirrors and charged, making appear as if there many soldiers coming to your camp.*

Essyllt was amazed at Arziel’s cunning, and said: “I am eternally grateful, for you have saved mine and all these soldiers’ lives. Indeed this plan was a risky one, for if it was not dark and the fog was not as thick, it would have been immediately obvious that you were using mirrors to create an illusion.*

Arizel nodded in approval. “But come, tell me - how did you get yourself in this predicament in the first place. A camp of seventy invaded by a dozen!”

Essyllt now looked away in disgust. *It was a dirty trick. When I had returned to the camp, a soldier in Iorwer*hian armor wearing a helmet came rushing to me, telling me that Caucus had something of great importance to tell me, and that I had to come right away. In my foolhardiness, I listened to the soldier when he told me there was no time to tell me who he was or to speak to others, and so I rushed into Caucus* tent.

“There I saw Caucus tied up, and two Tyras men in the tent. When I had realized it was a trap, it was too late, and they tied me and used me as leverage to take control of the rest of the camp. Later I learned that when we had retreated from the first battle, several of the Tyras men took some armor from our fallen soldiers, and blended in with our camp, pretending to be among the survivors. However because I did not return immediately, some were found out, and had to kill or tie up some of our soldiers.”

“I see.” said Arziel, now in deep thought. “Hining has proved to be a formidable foe, and one with endless tricks up his sleeve. Perhaps you may have underestimated him, Essyllt.”

“Perhaps.” said a voice, before Essyllt could answer.

Suddenly, a group of fifty soldiers had appeared from behind the woods, and attacked Essyllt’s soldiers.

“Hining’s men! - Why are they so far east! - This is a disaster!* cried the soldiers, as the two sides engaged in battle. Essyllt cursed loudly as he, Valis, and Arziel helped in battle, and protected the weaker soldiers from being killed. However, even as they fought, they had little hope left inside them.

After killing a man, and holding off two more, Essyllt clashed now with a new, more formidable foe, and seeing that neither could best the other, demanded to know whom he was.

*Don’t tell me you don’t know, Leitenant General Essyllt.” laughed the man. “I am Field Marshall Merrian Hining, current leader of the Tyras men.”

“That is a blatant lie,” Cursed Essyllt, “for I have already seen Hining is his camp, and you are not him.”

“Oh, did you actually think that General Kai was me?” teased the Marshall. “A young man, with no signs of grey in his hair. I am surprised you have been fooled so easily.”

Essyllt now showed signs of uncertainty, and Marshall Hining took this chance to strike with full force. Essyllt was surprised at how well the Marshall was with the sword, and after they had clashed twenty more times and had entered farther out into the woods, he changed his halberd into a scimitar.

“I’ve had about enough of you!” Essyllt then at incredible speeds attacked Hining with his scimitar, but Hining blocked his attacks easily with his shield. Still, Essyllt managed two light cuts on Hining’s upper arm and chest, although it did not seem to slow his down.

“Maverick!* shouted Hining to one of the fighters nearby. “Get me my double-hand!” Acknowledging the command, Maverick finished up his immediate fight, and took out the weapon from the belt of his yak, throwing it to Hining.

Placing his sword in his sheath and discarding his shield, Hining now used his new weapon to attack more freely, and was able to catch up to Essyllt’s pace. This however was a major feat, for double-hands were generally known to be slower, not faster in combat.

Now they were near some trees with low branches, and taking advantage of that, Hining made some quick slashes with his weapon, and the tangled branches and leaves fell on top of Essyllt. Then Hining kicked him some distance, to stop him from getting out of the trap easily, and charged.

Looking around quickly to see if there was any way of escape, Essyllt noticed a pit trap immediately behind him, and pretending to struggle in the branches, let Hining charge. When Hining was upon him, he made a quick dash to the right, and Hining fell down the leaves into the pit. However, as he was falling, he grabbed Essyllt’* leg, and they both fell down together.

Grabbing onto some rocks protruding from the walls on opposite ends, they continued fighting with their available hand. However, the rock that Hining was holding onto broke apart, and he slipped. He then threw his sword at where Essyllt was holding onto, and Essyllt let his hand go, falling down with Hining.

Essyllt did not want to be impaled by the spikes at the bottom of the pit, but there was not enough room to save himself without also saving Hining. Having little time to decide, he gritted his teeth (as always), and took out the crystals he held inside his armor. Then in an instant, they crystals transformed into a giant structure with a smooth edge that carried both of them up to the surface. However, because the transformation was done in haste, it was over done, and both of ended up falling from atop the trees.

Sliding down a tree, Hining was able to reach the bottom safely and quickly looked for his either of his swords. When he found his original sword, he charged towards Essyllt, who was still on the ground and weak from his massive transformation. He tried putting up a fight with Hining, but Hining was able to discard Essyllt’s scimitar without difficulty. As Essyllt reached for his scimitar with his hand, Hining took a small dagger from his belt, and stuck it through Essyllt’s hand, and into the ground.

Essyllt fell on his knees and cried out in pain. Heavily breathing, Hining approached him, and raised his sword to Essyllt’s face. “You’ve lost Essyllt. It’s all over.”

There were no soldiers near them anymore, but they could still hear the battle continuing in the distance. The noise was dying down though, and it seemed from the shouts that they were making their way east. Essyllt’s hopes dropped, and he only wished that some would escape unharmed.

“Why?” he said slowly. “Why were you there, waiting for us? If not for you, we could have escaped safely to the east. Damn you! Damn you all! Can you at least tell me if those evacuated from your camp made it safely?”

“There would be another beacon lit if any significant number survived.” said Marshall Hining, to Essyllt’s dread. “But to answer your first question, we were not *waiting’ for you. I was here specifically to make sure that no messengers or carrier birds related to Iorwerth - or even Arianwyn for that matter - about the battle. Although I did expect some to escape this way, and so I brought a small unit of men with me.*

Essyllt was silent for some time. “So this my end. To be killed by General - no, Marshall Hining himself. In other circumstances this would be a satisfying death, but knowing that I am responsible for so many lost lives - it all means nothing now. Go on, kill me Marshall. I am broken, and irredeemable at this point. Go on, DO IT.”

Hesitating, Field Marshall Merrian Hining raised his sword above the head of Lieutenant General Essyllt of Erros, ready to strike him dead.

~~~~~~~
At that moment, a large shout was heard were heard, and Marshall Hining saw a single elf on a yak approaching them. Leaving Essyllt where he lay, Hining charged towards the enemy. When they were within a sizeable distance however, the enemy unexpectedly jumped off yak high into the air, taking out the largest weapon Hining had ever seen in his life.
When he dodged the attack with his measly sword, Hining thought he heard some of his bones crack, due to the force of the attack. Then the enemy swiped the sword in several directions, nearly destroying a boulder, and creating miniature raptures in the ground beneath them. Hining barely dodged these attacks with his life, and retreated some distance.
“Who are you, and what is that massive weapon you are using?”
“Oh this?” said the elf, as if he wasn’t paying any attention. “It’s a Crystal Buster-Sword 193C. Six feet long, one foot wide. It’s a prototype I made myself, as smaller swords really did*’t.. cut it for me you can say. Do you like it?”
“Mor*ran!” said Essyllt in surprise. *What are you doing here?”
*What do you think?” said Mor*ran, now more serious. “I came here to save you and your group, as I heard you were in trouble.*
*Commander Mor*ran?” said Hining in surprise, as if he had heard the name before.
“You must be Marshall Hining; I’ve heard a description of you in my reports. Unfortunately, it seems that Essyllt failed his mission, so Warmaster Iorwerth will be furious. It won*t be much, but I’m afraid I will need your head, Marshall.” And so saying, Mor*ran rushed towards Hining again in full force.
Quickly taking Essyllt’s crystal scimitar with his left hand, Hining now attacked Mor*ran with his two weapons. However, Mor*ran’s attacks weren’t getting any weaker, and Hining saw that he losing. He retreated some distance, and the two charged once again.
After they clashed thirty more times, and Hining had continued his tactic of fighting and retreating, Mor*ran realized that he led them to the opposite end of the crystal structure, where the forest trees were closer together. “I suppose you can** use your weapon here, now can you Commander Mor*ran?” teased Hining.
“No, I suppose I can*t.” answered Mor*ran grimly, changing his weapon to a rapier, and rushing towards Hining again.
Then, when they were about to meet, Hining put the scimitar in his belt and took out some throwing knives he had hidden, throwing them skillfully at Mor*ran with his free hand. Mor*ran was surprised at this, and his left shoulder and right knee were pierced lightly by a knife while he focused on blocking the sword attack.
Now the fight was more even. Hining had made some more small cuts on Mor*ran, but Mor*ran returned as many the same, including a large, yet light, scar on Hining face. However, Mor*ran was beginning to get annoyed, and retreat for the first time himself.
Then, Mor*ran reached his arm out towards the crystal structure, and the crystals began to change. A large wave of solid crystal moving like suspended water emerged from the structure, and Mor*ran moved them out towards Hining in the form of spikes. Hining hid behind a tree while the spikes passed by him, and retreated from the small packed forest.
“How unlucky of me for the forest to my advantage to be positioned in front of a giant crystal!” thought Marshall Hining. Still, he was even more surprised that Mor*ran was able to pull of such a feat, and it appeared that he was skilled enough to be one of the rumored elves who could shape-shift crystal without singing.
