However, only after hearing no sounds of battle, and instead the shouts of his own men, did he realize that something was wrong. A strange looking object passed by him, and on closer inspection, Essyllt saw that it was a haystack on a carriage, being moved by the wind.

By the time he realized it was a trick, it was too late. Kai sent the signal for attack, and the Tyras men emerged from the holes they had dug on top of the hills, sending thousands of arrows down upon Essyllt’s men.

Many tried to fight back by shooting arrows into the hills, but the archers targeted these individuals first. Those who took on the defensive by covering themselves with their shields fared the best, but even then the soldiers and their yaks dropped like flies. Essyllt formed a barrier with his personal guards’ shields, and ordered in a loud voice for his army to fall back to the east.

Remembering now that Caucus had some leftover crystals, he cried, “Find Caucus! He has the crystals of concealment; with them we can safely escape!” And hearing thus, several brave soldiers looked for Caucus, some losing their own lives in the process.

Then suddenly, several soldiers cried that they had found him, and Essyllt’s group battled their way through the arrows to the trench that Caucus was hiding in. He had a mortal womb in his thigh, and one soldier volunteered to carry him. Caucus gladly gave them the crystals, and with them, they were able to safety escape and rescue several others.

Defeated, the remainder of Essyllt’s army retreated to an open field in the east. Barely more than a third made it out alive, and many still were injured. Counting his losses, among them his advisor Oluie, and three of his personal guard, Essyllt cried out, “Curse them; curse them all! To think that they had anticipated our attack! But that matters not now. The battle has only begun, and they will pay dearly for the blood that they have spilled.”

Essyllt now turned to Valis. “You were the only one who saw the danger in the hills, and in my ignorance, I had not listened to you. Because you have shown yourself to be sensible, I will make you my personal advisor. Tell me, what should be our next move?”

Valis thanked him, and said “Our main priority at the moment is to rest the troops, and maintain camp. We should also light a large fire to indicate to the enemy that we are in a temporary cease-fire, and to help any other survivors find the camp.* Essyllt immediately carried out the order.

After they had settled down, Essyllt used the communication crystals to relate to Commander Iestin and Commander Artus about their defeat. Both Commanders expressed their deepest regrets, and briefly discussed their new plans with Lietenant Essyllt.

Standing on a large rock, Essyllt said to his army, “Commander Iestin and Commander Artus both are currently planning a surprise attack at Hining’s camp, which appears to have moved north near the lake. Hining has lit a fire after ours to acknowledge our temporary ceasefire, but will be cautious for another attack. Therefore, I will go and parry some words with him, to buy Iestin and Artus some time.”

Taking his communication crystals with him, and ten guards, including his personal guard Arziel, he proceeded to head west. Valis and Caucus both offered to go with him, but Essyllt declined, saying that he needed Valis to watch over their camp, and that Caucus, now leaning on a stick, would just slow them down.

Lighting torches to see in the night, they made their way west. When they had approached the hills again, they saw a large fire north of the battle site and moved in that direction, out in the open. Eventually, they came before a hill with a battalion and men standing guard on top of it.

Walking some distance ahead of his men, Essyllt shouted to the men above, “I am Lieutenant General Essyllt Iorwerth. I have come to talk with General Hining.”

Several archers had readied their bows, but a man, now appearing from behind the hill, held up his hand, and they lowered their arms. “You are speaking to him,” lied Kai. “And it’s Marshall Hining now, for I have been promoted this morning.”

“That is hardly relevant.” spat Essyllt. “I have come to demand your immediate surrender.”

“You have come to demand surrender? You must be greatly mistaken then, for we are in a currently in a truce with Lord Iorwerth.”

“The moment you have waited in the hills in ambush, and killed show arrows at our soldiers, you have disqualified the truce.”

“So the truce would still be in effect if we had not done anything, but allowed your army to invade our camp and slaughter our men?”

“End this meaningless charade, Marshall, or it will be you who suffers at the end. A thousand soldiers have been dispatched after the news of our defeat, and they are swiftly on their way here as we speak.”

“That is a shameful lie. I have spies everywhere, and would know immediately if such an army was making their way here.*

*They have used the same concealment crystals that we had to hide their presence.”

“If you had enough crystals to conceal an army four times as large as the one with whom you have invaded, then you would not have used them so sparingly in your retreat.”

“I will not play these mind-games with you, Marshall Hining. You have within the hour to announce your defeat.”

“You are a fool if you think we will ever submit.”

“No, Marshall. It is you who is the fool; for the option doesn’t exist.” And with that, Essyllt and his company turned to leave.

After some distance from the hill, Essyllt took out his communication crystals, and ordered Commanders Iestin and Artus to commence the attack. Acknowledging the order, they both stationed their troops around Hining’s camp.

“We will have to change the plan, Iesten.” said Artus, speaking to Iestin with his communication crystal. “We are no longer backup, but the main force; a mere hundred and fifty against twelve hundred.*

*We have the concealment crystals, so we might have a chance. And even without them, our soldiers are far superior to that of humans.” said Iestin.

“And yet, Hining still had the audacity to move his army within walking distance of Iorwerth’s, which is six times as large. Let’s rely initially on the concealment crystals, and move our soldiers throughout the camp in groups. Let’s confuse them by using long-range arrows, and attack from all directions.*

*Exactly what I had in mind.” The two Commanders then discussed some minor plans in more detail, and carried out the order for attack.

In Marshall Hining’s new camp, the soldiers were celebrating their recent victory, and setting up the barricades around the new camp. From the beginning, Hining had planned to escape to the north, and sent many of his soldiers there to hide their provisions. Only a small number of things were permanently left behind to be used in the decoy camp.

Kai and Leif took charge of the camp, for Marshall Hining was not present. When several high ranking officials asked the brothers where Hining was, they simply answered cryptically “He is hiding.” This left some of the officials puzzled, but they did not question the brothers, for it was fairly common for Hining to disappear without word, and leave the brothers in command.

“As always, we will be doing the hard work, while Hining appears at the very end to stop some last-minute catastrophe, and get all the credit.” joked Kai.

“Yeah.” said Leif, sitting on the table in their tent, and looking through some paperwork. “But you’ve put yourself in quite a position, Kai. Now that they think you’re Hining, they will try to kill you.”

“And that’s why I’m going to be in hiding, just like the rumors say. I’m afraid you will have to fill in for me, Leif.”

“Shouldn’t be a problem, since you never fought a day in your life, Kai.”

“And I never will!” laughed Kai. “I’m the thinking type, and you’re the fighting type; that’s how it always was and worked. I couldn’t fight for my life, to be honest.”

“And I couldn’t think for the life of me.* returned Leif, smirking. “And yet here I’ll be, leading the troops and doing just that.”

They both continued chatting casually, until a soldier came running into their tent and announced that the camp was being attacked by an invisible enemy, and they had done already an immense amount of damage. Alarmed, Kai asked where the attack was coming from, and what the status of Essyllt’s camp in the east was.

*The attacks are coming.. from all directions, in almost every part of our camp. Essyllt’s camp is still waiting in the east, so these are different soldiers.”

“Damn him! I should have taken precaution against this, for Essyllt had warned me that there were more troops with concealment crystals. Leif, take command, I will go to the shelter. We have to hold off for as long as possible.”

“But how, against an invisible enemy?” asked Leif.

At this very moment, the guards at the entrance of the tent were slaughtered as several vague apparitions entered the tent. Cursing now, the brother and the remaining guards took cover behind a table. Reaching out for his spear, Leif jumped in the open to confront the enemies.

He could see them, he thought. Their apparitions, at least. They charged on him, but he blocked all their attacks, with a combination of instinct and a good eye. As they fought, he realized now that these were not concealment crystals more than they were obscuring crystals; for as his eyes adjusted, he could see the three elvish soldiers clearly when they were right in front of him.

But of course they knew that, and always kept their distance after taking charge. However, learning their movement patterns quickly, and deducing their locations from their steps and heavy breathing, he clashed several times with two of the enemy troops, killing them. The third tried to fight Leif himself, but quickly seeing that he was being overpowered, tried to escape. Leif however did*’t let him, and at amazing speed stuck his spear through the elf’s heart at the door of the tent.

Kai and their guards came out of their hiding place. Realizing that the elfs’ became visible upon death, Kai searched them for their crystals, but found the crystals deteriorated to dust. *It looks like we can** use them now.* cursed Kai. “Let’s go, for there’s no time!”

Leif nodded, and the company left the tent into the battlefield. A large beacon became visible on top of a hill, as the slaughter continued around them.

~~~~~~~
The battle had reached a stalemate. After Leif had assessed from his reports the enemy to be no greater than two-hundred strong, he related this to the soldiers, and they had regained their hope. Still, the fight was tough, for their enemy was invisible. “We just have to hold out for as long as possible.” thought Leif.
They evacuated all those who were unable to fight. This was a tricky process, but Leif and his men were able to pull it off by taking the escapees through some narrow hills. There Essyllt’s men followed, but were chased off when men hiding in the hills had splashed water from buckets on them, revealing their locations. This done, the people were safely taken in boats across the river, where the enemy could not follow unseen.
Back in the battlefield, those who could afford it set their swords and rapiers on fire, both to see in the darkness and fog, and to lessen the effects of the concealment crystals. Other had tried mounting their yaks, a luxury the enemy apparently did possess, but these the enemy shot down first, and the thought was quickly abandoned.
“Most of them are using long-range arrows.” thought Leif. “This way they can*t be seen, or easily followed.” Leif then instructed his soldiers to always travel alongside the hills, and to use their shields to protect them from the other side.
A large group of soldiers had come to the hill where the beacon was lit, for the enemy had realized its significance. They had abandoned the use of arrows here, and instead used spears and halberds. Here Leif spent most of his attention.
Suddenly a report came that a powerful enemy wielding a sword was making his way towards the hill, and had killed several of their best soldiers. Seeing the commotion in the distance, Leif nodded and ran with his sword raised to greet the enemy. When he had, they sparred several times, and Leif had dodged all of the enemy’s attacks.
“Impressive.” said Commander Iestin. “Tell me! Who is my enemy who has dodged all of my attacks thus far?”
“I am Commander Leif, current head of the Tyras army in Hining’* absence. Who are you?”
“Commander Leif of the Tyras?” he had removed his concealment, and stood some distance in front of Leif. “I have heard many things about you. I am Commander Iestin Edern. I have come to extinguish that beacon of yours; but if you will stand in my way, then I will take your head as well, and bring it to Lord Iorwerth as a gift.”
So saying, he disappeared again, and charged. Leif saw the attack from the left coming, and swiftly dodged the sword. However, he underestimated the force of the blow, and was pushed back. Knowing there was advantage to charge at an enemy while they were temporarily stunned, Leif quickly regained focus, and blocked several fast, yet inaccurate swipes of Iestin’s sword.
After they clashed several more times, Leif adjusted, and was able to tell the movements of Iestin now. He began a fierce counterattack, and it was Iestin now who was dodging his attacks. Taking advantage of this moment, Leif made a quick swipe of his blade across the dirt towards Iestin, blinding him. Then with his other hand, he quickly took out his second blade he concealed, and swung it horizontally towards Iestin’s head.
Commander Iestin, although temporarily blinded, had quick instinct, and leaped backwards on the ground some distance, did a handstand, and got up again in an instant. However, he realized that some locks of his hair had been cut off.
“You aren’t half bad, Commander Leif.” He hissed. *Although I call foul play.”
“It is you who is using foul play, Iestin. Remove your concealment crystals, and fight me face to face!”
Commander Iestin grinned, but ignored Leif’s words and charged again. This time he came in stronger, and his attacks were faster. The two clashed their swords thirty times more, yet neither tired nor were slowed down.
Getting annoyed, Iestin retreated for once, and made his way to the top of a large boulder. With amazing speed and accuracy, Leif shot several crossbow bolts his way, but Iestin stopped them with a dagger he had hidden in his armour.
“You are indeed a worthy enemy, but let us see how much longer you can hold!” said Iestin, now chanting some things Leif could not hear. A large spark appeared, and Leif saw the crystal sword being transformed into two spears (the concealment crystals cannot hide the transformation of crystal).
Then Iestin jumped from the rock, and prepared to attack Leif from above. Leif did not move from his place, but instead shot endless bolts from his crossbow at Iestin. All of these shots Iestin, although with difficulty, blocked, and came down upon Leif. Although taken aback, Leif managed with his main sword, and was able to withhold the attacks of both of Iestin’s spears.
Realizing that he could be taking this advantage to use both his swords, Iestin deduced that Leif was incredibly weakened at this point, and dragged on the fight. “Enough of this!” cried Leif, now attacking at a very high speed that surprised Iestin, and making a deadly cut across Iestin’* left shoulder, which made him drop his left spear, and cry out in pain.
However, breathing heavily, Leif collapsed on his own knee from exhaustion, dropping his weapon. Iestin, with his hand clasped on his bleeding shoulder moved back to rest upon a rock and said, “Alas, so this is how it must end. No tricks or surprises or hidden weapons. Indeed, I applaud you for dealing me this fatal blow. But like all men, you must eventually tire, and this will prove your downfall.”
Now getting up, he slowly moved towards Leif, while reverting his weapon back to his sword of choice. Then, standing over Leif, who made no attempt to escape, he raised his sword.
“You may say your last words, Commander Leif of the Tyras Army. I will grant you this one thing, in honor of the fight you have put up against me.*
Still breathing heavily, Leif took his time before answering. “Yes. There is this one thing that I wish to say..” he said slowly.
Before he could finish, the sounds of a dozen loud bells were heard in the distance. When he had listened more closely, Iestin’s face turned a pale white; for they were the Iorwerth bells, the bells of surrender and defeat. Turning away from Leif for a moment, he looked around and indeed saw in the distance several of their troops among the enemy, their concealment crystals deactivated, and the white flags of surrender raised in the air.
“Ah, yes. I wanted to say that you should be more aware of your surroundings, Commander Iestin.” It was Leif’s voice.
Turning his head in amazement, Iestin saw that Leif had disappeared without trace. Confused for a moment, and looking about the area for him, he quickly gasped, and reached into his pocket. The concealment crystals were gone. He was tricked.
~~~~~~~

“I repeat,” said Lieutenant General Essyllt, with the knife at his throat. “Cease all hostilities at once! We are surrendering. All troops are to remove their concealment crystals, and to evacuate immediately from the camp. I repeat, stand down! Cease all hostilities at once!”

These were the commands that Essyllt repeated over and over again to his communication crystals. There were about a dozen enemy troops now in total, but with Essyllt under their control, they were able to easily secure the camp, and tie all of the commanders and officers.

After Essyllt had finished, Ace, the leader of the enemy group, took the communication crystal, and spoke with General Kai.

*What took so long, Ace?” asked Kai. “We were dying in here.”
