Xendiu clasped his arms around Erheian's, and cried lightly. "If you do this, you would have done a great service to the Iorwerth. Please, come and rest in my tent tonight. I will discuss this with Warmaster Iorwerth tonight, and convince him of your plan. If all goes well, you will leave first thing tomorrow."

Emil suddenly got mad, and rebuked Xendiu, "My master is terribly sick, and he should neither leave this camp on such a dangerous mission, nor leave this very tent. I was sent here to care after him, and besides, all of his medications and belongings are in this tent."

"Then move them," Xendiu said angrily. "You have seen a side of me I rarely show to others at court. You best not take advantage of my leniency Emil. Now I bid you both farewell, and goodnight."

"Wait!" cried Erheian, as Xendiu was about to leave the tent. "Yes?" he said. "Thank you for visiting me today, Xen." said Erheian. This time it was Xendiu that smiled weakly.

After leaving Erheian's tent, Xendiu quietly made his way to Lord Iorwerth's quarters. All the lights had been extinguished, and only the fireflies illuminated his way. He was unnaturally tired, and remembered that he’d be getting no sleep tomorrow.

~~~~~~
To the Army of Tyras,
Surrender at once, and you will be spared. Join the rebels, and we will murder every last man, woman, and child under your jurisdiction. There is no other alternative. As a sign of strength, I will allow your army to remain within ten thousand meters of our army until you decide, collectively or individually. However, if any more than ten of your troops come closer than this range, we will not hold back. This is our only warning.
Warmaster Iorwerth
The newly appointed Field Marshal scoffed as he heard the message, and stuffed the cold toad soup down his aching throat. If was half past six, and they were seated outside. The sky was turning a pale blue, and the fog had become unnaturally thick. Standing in front of him were the famed brothers Leif and Kai, the latter of whom had read the letter to him.
“Empty words, empty promises.” He paused for a moment to finish the soup, and a servant came to take it away. Sighing heavily and looking at some papers now, he asked for the brothers’ opinion.
“Our troops wouldn’t fall for such a low trick. Iorwerth ordered the death of our King; not a single soul in this camp would dare think of defecting.” said Leif, disgusted.
“Iorwerth probably knows this as well,” said Kai. “Or he would offer a reward for your head. He knows very well about us and what we stand for. There is nothing he can accomplish by killing one or two of us, for we are unified, and don’t need any leader to go on.”
“It seems whimsical of me to say so, but I must agree with the both of you.” replied Marshal Hining. “However, I am more interested in the second thing - this truce of his. Tonight is the last night that he could attack, for we are but a days journey from the walls of Lletya. I would be very surprised if they did not take this opportunity to attack us, for this truce seems a feeble attempt to lower our guard.*
*The battle preparations are almost finished, and I will not let this stop us.” said Leif. “If they think that they are lowering our guard, then we will use that against them. I have full confidence in our strategy.”
“Very well then. Proceed as you two have as before.” Ending it with that, Marshall Hining stuck the letter beneath a pile of papers as the brothers nodded in affirmation. “You said that there was one more letter, Kai? From the Lletyan rebels.”
“Yes. Arianwyn’* white carrier bird came in this morning, bearing new instructions. It is somewhat long, so I would have you read it yourself.”
Mashall Hining took the letter from Kai, and read it in silence. After re-reading it the second time, and then the third, he frowned, and gave the letter to Leif to read.
“New plan.. beacons.. Gran Point.. surround in fire.. This plan seems sensible enough. What’s the matter?” asked Leif.
*Don’t tell me you don’t know, Leif?” asked Kai quizzically. “Using fire in battle is a sacred crime for the elves.”
“Is that right? Iorwerth was more than happy enough to use fire against King Tyras.*
*That was a human assassin nonetheless. And not a very smart one. If the tent was any closer to the edge of the forest, it could have caused a massive wildfire.”
“A massive wildfire.. that*s what Arianwyn wants alright.” said Marshall Hining, shaking his head. “I for one will have none of it. We can use fire as we will in our own realm, but to help Arianwyn use it in this realm is to earn the disfavor of the Crystal Goddess herself. We’ll continue acting independently as always. Let’s remind both Iorwerth and Arianwyn what we are really capable of.”
“So, you still think that they are going to attack tonight?” asked Leif.
“Gut feeling.” said Marshall Hining, pounding his chest.
“Same as always, Merrian.” joked Kai, crossing his arms.
“Heh, I suppose so. That’s all for now. Make me proud, you two.* The Marshall got up from his seat, and took his papers with him. The brothers saluted him, and calling his attendants, he left for his tent.
“Things are getting interesting now, aren’t they Kai?” asked Leif, grinning.
“Yeah.” After standing the whole time, Kai collapsed into a chair with a long sigh of relief. Kai sat down as well, and looked up into the foggy sky.
*This beacon idea though.. I think we might just borrow that..”
High General Glouphrie was seated outside of his tent, reading a book by the fire. Sleeping nearby him was the beast Tuska - an enormous purple-haired monster that had been the dread of the camp, and rumored to be a god. Three unlucky soldiers guarded the beast, their spears ever ready.
The gnome cursed as Lieutenant General Essyllt of Erros appeared in sight, and approached him with a host of guards. Asking the guards to wait outside, Essyllt followed Glouphrie alone into his tent.
“Do you have the papers, or not?” asked Glouphrie impatiently.
“You are short and to the point I see, Glough. Yes, I have your papers for you. I wasn’t able to take care of the witnesses, but they are all listed there along with the evidence, so you can do as you please.”
Taking the papers from him, Glouphrie quickly skimmed through them to make sure that they had what he wanted, and calmed down a bit.
“You are quite a decadent fellow, aren’t you? But I made my promise, and I will keep it. Remember, you are bound by my magical oath, so you will immediately suffer the penalty of death if my secret is ever found out.”
“You do not have to remind me, Glough. It would have never come to this though if you had initially agreed with my plan. Now where are they? The crystals of yours?”
“They are here.” Glouphrie dragged a chest across the floor, and opening it with a key from his pocket, gave Essyllt several pouches full of crystals. “Unfortunately, I cannot give you any more, but it should be enough say, for two hundred and fifty soldiers.”
*Only for two hundred and fifty? I’ll be petitioning Iorwerth for twice that, if you don’t recall Glouphrie.” shot back Essyllt angrily.
“You can either accept my gift, or decline it. As I said, I cannot give you any more. It was not easy to make these, and many more will be needed in tomorrow’s war.”
“I’ll take it.” said Essyllt coldly, taking the pouches from Glouphrie, and preparing to leave the tent.
Glouphrie eyed him coldly and said, “You are a fool if you think you can convince Lord Iorwerth of your plan. I will be waiting here to receive my crystals back shortly.”
“We will see, gnome.” Calling his guards, he promptly made his way out of the tent.
~~~~~~~

It was night time, and Lord Iorwerth and Lieutenant Essyllt were arguing again in the war tent.

“Enough!” cried Lord Iorwerth. “If you believe my plans to be in err, and have the audacity to affront a Commander of worthy name, then speak! What would you have me do?”

Essyllt, non-relenting answered, “I have made my case clearly against Erheian’s plan. To let General Hining’s army go unscathed is a foolish choice. All so that Erheian can have leeway in his arguments! Say, what reason is there to believe that he got there alive? That he had delivered his advice, and that - most importantly - Arianwyn had accepted it?

“You say that upon reconsideration, the movements of Hining’s army would present them with the option of defense anyways, so it is imperative that no harm comes to Hining’s army. But you know very well that that blasted gnome can easily create illusions, and with our archers hunting down the rebels white birds, they would never what happened to Hinings Army until it is too late.

*Let me take an army of five hundred against them. My Tarddiad soldiers are worth three of Hinings human soldiers. We will easily overpower them, and I will bring you General Hining’s head myself.”

Lord Iorwerth looked annoyingly at Essyllt. “You seem to not be well versed in the maths, Lieutenant Essyllt. There are twelve hundred troops under General Hining’s command. If your troops are worth three of his, then you will only need four hundred, not five."

Essyllt gritted his teeth, but held himself back. “So you will let me go? With four hundred men, against the army of Tyras?”

“You never give up, do you?” hollered Iorwerth. “Fine; I did not wish it to come to this, but if it the only way to get rid of you, I will give you the right to attack Hining’s camp. It goes against all my wishes, but I wish to see the result of such a conflict. Know I will not give you any more than four hundred.”

“Seems strange.” said Lieutenant Essyllt, “Your words say that you are disappointed, but you have easily given in to my proposal, as if you anticipated this eventuality. Were your words of truce to the army of Tyras a blatant lie?”

“I may be many things: a murderer, a scoundrel, a betrayer of mine own kin. But of all things I am, I am not one who goes back on his word.”

“That in itself is a lie.”

“Perhaps.* answered Iorwerth, with shifty eyes. “But you over-reach yourself. You have shown me disrespect beyond measure, and it is only through my grace and good will that I will let you go without punishment. Just know that if your mission fails, I do not want to see you here again with us. You can consider this as a conditional exile. You have my blessing, for these troops are mine, and their lives are worth more to me than anything.”

“Fine with me.” replied Essyllt confidently. He bowed respectfully to Lord Iorwerth, and left the tent.

Thinking deeply for some moments, Lord Iorwerth called over Mor*ran, who was among the soldiers in the room listening to the conversation.

“Morv, Essyllt is one of your closest childhood friends, is he not?*

Mor*ran, knowing where this way going, cautiously answered “Yes.*

*What is your opinion of this matter?” he pressed.

“Well,” began Mor*ran, “I do agree with some of the things he has said. However, he acted too rashly, and I do not know what to make of this expedition. He is certainly capable, but up against an enemy like General Hining, he may fall short.”

“You know very well then what I will ask of you.” said Lord Iorwerth.

“I would have done it even if you hadn’t asked me.” answered Mor*ran.

Lord Iorwerth nodded in understanding. “Then I wish you him luck. Even though I anticipated this, I too am unsure; but I am prepared for any eventuality. Let us just hope it is a favorable one.”

“Yes, let us hope it is”. Mor*ran answered sadly, as he bowed lightly, and left the tent into the fog.

~~~~~~~
With his army of four hundred, Lieutenant General Essyllt headed west towards the Isafdarian hills. In was late at night, and the fog had only gotten worse. They arrived at a small lake some distance from their camp, and being they still had a long way to go, Essyllt allowed the army to stop and rest.
“We will split up into three groups.” announced Essyllt “I will lead the main unit of two hundred soldiers. The northern and southern units, each with a hundred soldiers, will be led by Commander Iestin and Commander Artus respectively.
“The concealment crystals that were made by Glouphrie are being passed around the camp as I speak. Although in our initial arrangement each soldier received a crystal, there are fewer available crystals than we thought. Therefore, the majority of crystals will be placed with the northern and southern units. The main unit will attack Hining’s camp head-on, while the northern and southern units will wait in ambush in the far north and south.”
With this said, the army was divided, and Iestin and Artus took command of their units. After giving the soldiers some time to collect the crystals and prepare their yaks, the three armies parted ways to the west.
As the main unit progressed, Caucus and Oluie, two of Essyllt’s advisors and crystal-singing experts, argued about to do with their limited supply of crystals. They eventually decided to shape the crystals into a thin wall to move ahead of the army, but had warned Essyllt that it would only conceal the army within a radius of three hundred meters.
Having no alternative, Essyllt approved of the plan, and asked sub-commander Valis, who was his military advisor at the time, for his thoughts. Valis in response asked to hear what plan Essyllt had in mind.
Lieutenant Essyllt laughed and said, *There is no need for any elaborate plan. When we have come three hundred meters from Hining’s camp and our concealment crystals will no longer have any effect, we will simply charge at full speed, and engage in battle. With our two hundred experienced soldiers, we can easily subdue the weakling army of General Hining.”
“While General Hining’s troops may not be experienced, the man himself is a brilliant strategist, and not to be reckoned with. There are many hills in that area, and on them his troops can defeat even the greatest of warriors with their arrows.” replied sub-commander Valis.
“When Hining’s army moved unusually close to Iorwerth’s main camp, they were in the southern region of the Isafdarian hills, where the hills are high and suitable for such a tactic. However, they moved further north where the hills are low and steep. By the time that they realize what is going on, and drag their soldiers out of their featherbeds to put on their armor, they will have neither the thought nor the time to climb any such hills.”
“Still, won’t there be archers keeping guard at the hills?”
“You are right about that. At this hour though, there wouldn’t be so many, so it should not cause a significant problem for us.”
Valis was still unsure, but seeing sense in Essyllt’s words, he did not pursue the conversation any further.
Shortly afterwards, the very first light of the enemy camp appeared in the distance. Slowing down the army, Lieutenant General Essyllt ordered the camp to extinguish all lights and fires, lest it interfere with or weaken the potency of the crystal barrier at the head of the army. Having done so, the soldiers were surprised when they realized how much light the barrier had actually produced.
“A strange thing it is,” thought Caucus, “for something to produce so much light on one side, and obscure objects in darkness on the other.”
They were making steady progress, and were quieting down now as well. Caucus and Oluie discussed some plans they were considering, and occasionally came to Essyllt to hear his opinion. Valis and two other officials made rounds around the camp, and made sure that everything was in order. Essyllt himself was talking to his personal guard, and leading the very front of the procession.
Hining’s camp now came into clearer view. It was located near some small hills, and the tents had been scattered about across a long radius. Vague images of people could be seen walking about near the campfires, but the fog made it hard to see.
When Valis saw this, he dispelled his doubts. Some soldiers appeared to get excited as well. Essyllt, feeling confident about the battle that lay ahead of them, stopped the army and spoke thus:
“We are but a short distance from the limit of the barriers effect. Once we pass it, Caucus will dispel the magics, and we will come into full view of the enemy. This will greatly frighten them, for it will look as if we appeared from thin air. Then we shall march at full speed, and destroy them in swift battle.
“They will not be prepared, for they have not anticipated such an attack, and have been lulled by the false truce of Lord Iorwerth. Even now they wander aimlessly around their camp, and the hills appear to be entirely man-less. Come! Let us march forward, and leave victorious!” The soldiers cheered, and the flag of the Iorwerth Clan was raised to the sky. Essyllt then pointed his crystal halberd forward, and the army rushed towards the camp.
Caucus, who was known to be the most knowledgeable in the arts of crystal singing and the rune magics, attempted to dispel the barrier as they reached the three-hundred meter mark. However, being that it was such a large-scale apparition, the dispersion spell had gone out of control, and the barrier exploded instead. The light blinded the eyes of all present and the noise filled the entire forest, even as far as Iorwerth’s main camp in the east, so loud it was.
Hearing the unusually loud noise, Leif looked over his shoulder to find the army of Iorwerth marching towards their camp, appearing as if from thin air. Shocked at how they were able to pull off such a feat, he was frozen in his place.
Kai quickly snapped him out of it, saying “Indeed, if it was under any other circumstances, this development would have put us under disarray. But let us not think on this now; they will still fall into our trap, and be destroyed.” Leif came back to his senses, and nodded his head in understanding.
When Essyllt’s army had neared the entrance of the camp, they heard shouts and drums coming within, and the first volleys were shot from within the fog. The initial damage proved however minimal, and they saw figures falling back into the camp.
Then the army of Essyllt swarmed into General Hining’s camp. Without a second glance, they destroyed everything that came to sight. Tents were shattered, campfires extinguished, clothing lines torn apart, chairs tables, barricades - all overturned or destroyed.
When Lieutenant General Essyllt got off his yak and walked some distance into the camp, he was overjoyed, and commanded his personal guards to set up the flag of the Iorwerth Clan in the territory as a sign of victory.
