What is a Grimoire you ask? In simple terms it is a guide to how magic works. However I'm going to take things a step further and cover a good deal of the other stuff the power behind magic can do.

For starters what powers magic? Rune stones? Not really. Rune stones are made by taking rune essence to a rune altar and charging the runes to a specific type (or combination). Basically all the altars do is function as a prism changing the rune essence to the kind of energy you want. Rune essence was made by exposing a rock cavern to the Stone of Jas (more on this later) which is more or less pure Anima. (Short summary of the Stone of Jas: The stone is an Elder Artifact made to power up the other Elder Gods and they get powered up by consuming Anima so the Stone of Jas is pretty much a big Anima receptacle.) And as a result Rune Essence became closer to Sacred Mud in that it adapts to things it is exposed to. Exposing it to Rune Altars makes a sort of Anima imprint (see the section on spell/prayer books for more on Anima imprinting) that aids an inexperienced mage in forming their own Anima into a spell.

In the books spell casting is a great strain on the user and has even killed mages that try to cast spells beyond their power. Also not all mages use runes like the Moonclan and Mahjarrat and Vampyres and Demons so clearly spells are powered by the mage themself via their own Anima/life force and runes just aid in the spellcasting. So what the heck is Anima?

-Anima Mundi-

As magic spans out into so many different topics for the sake of not driving everyone insane I'm going to start at the beginning and hope that is easiest to follow.

What came first the chicken or the Elder Egg? Much like in reality the question of which is more plausible: That the universe as we know it just emerged one day. Or that somehow super-beings were already around to direct things. This is an endlessly looping question because as improbable as it is that everything just *happened* somehow it is even more implausible that complex life existed in some form prior to the start of everything. That would require not only for things to just come into existence to form stuff but for that stuff to be super complicated Gods that can manipulate the very laws of reality that would have had to have formed them.

But unlike in real life in Runescape we have proof these super-beings exist. So logically using Ockham's razor (If multiple possibilities exist picking the one with the least assumptions will provide a more solid foundation because less can turn out to be wrong even if another option sounds better.) I will be assuming the Gods came before almost everything else because they exist and they can do all the other improbable stuff like form a universe even though complex life existing before simple building blocks is stupidly unlikely.

Elder Gods being according to my theory the second (technically third) thing to exist suggests something very interesting though. What if the Elder Gods are not complicated life? When Elder Gods are born they eat Anima to grow and the order they feed in is based on who wakes up first. First come first serve so the earlier they wake the earlier they eat and the earlier they eat the more "food" available to them.

Elder Gods have been described by Jagex as being "the embodiment of Magic" and only consume Anima. They create everything themselves so from that we can conclude that Elder Gods are made up of Anima and in fact everything in this universe is a byproduct of Anima as manipulated by the Elder Gods.

So for some reason a large amount of Anima existed and then it became sentient somehow which gave birth to the 5 Elder Gods. But why did Anima exist? Anima as stated by Mod Crow in the "Campfire - Answers" thread on June 27th 2013 is formed by life (More specifically the more balanced life is the more Anima it generates). So what that suggests is that the universe even with nothing in it was still endlessly expanding, or growing. The universe itself would have to be considered "Alive". As a result an insane amount of Anima would have been generated which eventually gained sentience.

*Note there is nothing to prove this other than that it is the only possible answer I can come up with that makes any kind of sense. Poor reasoning I admit but roll with me on this one.

This will be Event 0 on our timeline. Anima forms somehow and sentient life evolves in the form of 5 super beings.

-Elder Gods-

And those 5 super beings which formed from the lifeblood of the universe have "natures" or "personalities" to them. As these traits didn't exist until these beings came into existence it can be viewed as the Elder Gods inheriting their natures as the will of the universe itself or them simply being the ones to introduce them to the universe but either way Elder Gods embody these traits so lets take a look at what the universe created because it is probably important:
Jas - Progression: The ability to move forward.
Ful - Constancy: The ability to remain.
Wen - Inversion: The ability to reverse.
Bik - Alteration: The ability to change.
Mah - Potential: The ability to develop.

Time was also born with the Elder Gods as before things existed the passing of cause to effect would have had no meaning so it is interesting to see the Elder Gods have taken on the aspects of a remote control for time itself. The Elder Remote if you will. Picture the Elder Gods as 5 power ranger zords who all combine into one remote and each one is a different button on that remote.
Jas - Fast forward
Ful - Pause/Stop
Wen - Rewind
Bik - Record
Mah - Play

Each has a different function but there are a few things about this setup that interest me.

The first being Bik is to alter or to change what already is. Bik should be able to re-record over the video that is history if that is the case and potentially change all the things.

This makes Bik potentially the biggest threat of all the Elder Gods because you can't possibly beat something that can just change the outcome of anything it wants.

Another thing I find strange is Ful. Every other Elder God has a nature which moves or changes things making Ful the grass starter pokemon of the Elder Gods. (Google image "1st starter pokemon problems" it is the 1st image) but basically Fire and Water type pokemon have only a few weaknesses and have a few strengths while grass has 5 weaknesses and fewer strengths. This reminds me of Ful because every other Elder God is a facet of time that does something to time, moves it in some way and Ful's nature is to remain the same which seemingly opposes the nature of every other Elder God. How strange then that Ful is the builder whose people carved out the planets.

Lastly I want to remark upon the strangeness of Wen. Wen*ra (the voice of Wen) is the only Elder Voice not at the location of its Elder God and is actually at the wrong location. Wen's nature also happens to be reversal so I'm thinking perhaps that plays some key part in why Wen stands out.

But enough about their natures. What do Elder Gods do?

Well what does any lifeform do?
Eat
Sleep
Reproduce

Elder Gods eat and reproduce via Anima. Once evolved the Elder Gods went about building planets and trying to form the perfect planet. A perfect planet as viewed by the Elder Gods is one that produces the best Anima which is done by having the most balanced life. This is important because once this perfect planet is formed the Elder Gods become inactive and lay their eggs/become eggs possibly and when those eggs hatch how much Anima is available decides what power they have available.

The newly born Elder Gods drain the "perfect" planet dry killing it and then absorb the rest of the universe in what is known by the Fremennik as "The End of Things" then set about creating a new, improved perfect planet for the next generation of Elder Gods to feed on.

This is important because if they run out of energy or time before they must hibernate again the planet the next generation of Elder Gods hatches on may not have enough energy to sustain them all and those that wake up and feed later may not get enough power to survive.

A failure occurred in the previous cycle causing Mah to lose much of her power and intelligence and the others even believed she was dead and left her behind. As a result drastic measures were taken to ensure the current cycle was more productive and the Elder Gods fashioned tools to aid them in being more precise with the creation of planets. These tools are known as Elder Artifacts of which there are 12. 8 are tools that were discarded along the way because if the Elder Gods found ways to make them better they had no use for them and simply left them behind not caring about what happened to them. The final 4 that were ideal were all left on Gielinor as Gielinor (our planet) is the perfectly balanced planet and the Elder Gods went to sleep here and had no further need for their tools.

-Elder Artifacts-

It is believed the Elder Gods attempted to use tools in their previous cycles (See "The Measure" for more on this). What makes the tools in this cycle different is mainly the most powerful tool; The Stone of Jas aka the Catalyst was actually Jas' egg removed from the next cycle and used as a battery to be siphoned off of. One Elder God was sacrificed in advance to ensure the other 4 would live. Surprisingly that Elder God was the strongest of the current cycle meaning the first to awaken. This makes me wonder if perhaps Elder Gods don't take turns deciding who feeds when or if the order is always the same or always random.

The function of the Stone of Jas is to power up the Elder God using it so in essence they all have the power of Jas so when/if they make their own Elder Artifacts they will all be powered up Elder Artifacts as if they were made by the strongest Elder God and not a weakened one so the order they fed in won't jeopardize their ability to create worlds.

The Kiln aka the Elder Kiln introduces the TokHaar to a planet who live and die and are reborn endlessly within the kiln which is thrust into the planet. They are in charge of shaping the landmass of the planet. The kiln was created by Ful.

The Siphon aka The Staff of Armadyl is an artifact which improves the magical aptitude of its wielder (and as it is flowing with Elder Energy aka Anima powers up the user as well) and was designed for manipulating the flow of energy and to imbue or siphon energy/attributes from things the Elder Gods wished to create. As this staff contains a ton of energy within it from Elder Gods and is designed to transfer energy so evidently even mortals/lesser Gods can create life with this staff as long as the building blocks or seeds of life are present.

The Horn is the last of the 4 perfect Elder Artifacts used to create Gielinor and it was used to control the TokHaar which is strange because the TokHaar already have "The Watchers" which were created by The Elder Kiln to pass along instructions from the Elder Gods; not to mention the Kra. Also the Horn can bind sea monsters to the will of the person using it so I believe it to not be for communicating with others but controlling them in case they disobey the will of the Elder Gods or do not possess the intellect necessary to obey them. While the TokHaar don't seem the slightest bit rebellious perhaps the sea monsters were actually used to carve out the seas and oceans and they were less cooperative or less intelligent and needed to be controlled and not just instructed.

Other Elder Artifacts that were not perfect and were discarded along the way include:

The Blade aka Guthix's Sword which was used by the Elder Gods to separate elements they did not want to join or to travel to one another should they have split up. (See the Structure of the Universe for more on this)

The Locator aka the Crown Archival which can locate all the artifacts but also broadcasts the users location to anyone with an Elder Artifact. Presumably created to retrieve a discarded artifact that was needed again and make finding the others easier once that was accomplished.

And last of the currently known artifacts: The Measure accurately named as it simply measures the level of Anima something generates. May have been a tool from the previous cycle as it is found on Freneskae the last "best" world of the previous cycle and would have had to have been discarded immediately after it was made to be from this cycle.

And 5 Elder Artifacts remain unknown and all that is known about them other than that they were all discarded and probably ended up on Gielinor eventually is that one of them is definitely in the Desert and another on Tuska's back.
