I'm more interested in the Soul Altars current state rather than location. It's the 6th Age and the rune famine and barbarian invasions from previous ages would make it highly sought out to either protect or destroy.

Whilst the Blood Altar was hidden in a complex cavern/laboratory, it seems well protected for its age. The Death Altar is also hidden from the outside world within the Temple of Light, and doesn't appear any less damaged than the others.

I suspect the Soul Altar to be treated as a hidden relic by whoever currently controls it. Likely keeping it secret rather than flaunting its existence to the world and its prying eyes.

I find that unlikely. In symbolism, blood is important for life, as it gives and maintains life, but is not synonymous with life, just as gasoline gives and brings fire, but is not fire. Even then, blood is only important for animals, whereas life covers everything that lives: animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, magical creatures, everything.

This is in fact adressed in the game: when resurrecting Iban, Kardia notes that while blood is the giver of life force, she also needs to recreate the shadow, "the parts of a man that cannot be seen or touched: Those intangible things, the essence of life itself".

If we go by this, blood is the element that ties the elements that make a being (mind, body and soul) with the elements relating to the state of a being (death and life). Therefore, the runic elements could be categorised as such:

Air, Water, Earth and Fire: Primary elements
Mind, Body and Soul: Things that make a being
Cosmic and Astral: Aspects of the universe
Chaos, Nature and Law: Forces of the universe
Life and Death: Things that determine the state of a being
Blood: Things that tie the things that make a being with the things that determine the state of a being

Only if you think another rune will ever be brought into the game. I don't think they will ever bring in another rune and as such blood being misnamed life makes much more sense.

Though Idk about magical creatures living and dying as such.

Well, life runes are now a thing... kind of? I mean, it's unclear whether the Life Altar in Gower Quest actually counts as canon.

On the note about the Soul runes being butterfly wings:
RSC's soul runes do indeed look like butterfly wings, but the soul runes of today look like angel wings. The difference is far too marked to be an accidental change of design.

Though I agree with the idea of a Soul Altar being tied to the Anima Mundi in some way, the butterfly motif is anecdotal at best. I do love the post on it, however, it is very compelling and moving.

Fair enough, but in all honesty, butterfly would be a more fitting symbol for the soul rune than wings. As I established, a butterfly symbolizes soul in multiple cultures and religions across the planet. Wings, on the other hand, symbolize overcoming challenges, rising above our base/animal quantities and escaping from undesirable conditions. Basically, wings are not associated with souls, they're associated with desires, potential and freedom. That's not something I'd associate with souls, that's something I'd associate with Zamorak, whose philosophy is all about selfimprovement and overcoming challenges. It kind of explains why he has wings from a symbolic point of view, though.

I like the EW idea.

It would give people incentive to love and do that series.

As much as I appreciate you showing support for the option I favor, please stop necro-bumping abandoned threads. If you feel a topic in an abandoned thread is worth discussing again, make a new thread incorporating any new information or insights on the topic you have had rather than trying to restart a thread that people weren't using.

One thing worth noting is that Menaphos seems to be the favourite for where the Soul Altar is located now.
Though my hopes are still up for the Workshop.. it obviously has something to do with runes, but what...?

I know gravebumping is considered taboo on most forums, and for good reason. Generally, if the community, including the original author, has lost interest in a topic, floating it to the top will be little more than spam.

But I sincerely believe that the RS lore forum is different. There is a lot of speculation on here, a lot of perennial topics that periodically ebb and flow in popularity, and a lot of dense, well-researched threads that compile a lot of useful information and competing views.

You're asking him to go through this thread, find all the relevant information, and repost it in a new thread. Think about how absurd this is. The topic already exists. It's had plenty of meaningful contributions. And clearly, folks are still willing to talk about it.

Thing is, the lore is so dense and the lorehound community is so small, posting a new version of an extant topic will almost certainly lead to the same handful of people rehashing the exact same opinions they had three months ago. At least, this way, the comments are already there, so we can build on them and maybe even take the discussion somewhere new.

I'm sorry, I know it's off topic, and I don't really have a dog in this fight. Still, it irks me whenever I go through the lore forum and see someone bitching about gravebumping or breaking the forum code.

I've been saying this for a while now, yes.

Gravebumping in the Lore Forums is... different.

Snip

Just because I'm going through my forum profile for a trip down memory lane and because I'm feeling petty as hell: I didn't even gravebump the thread. Three months after the last post shouldn't be considered "gravebumping." Especially when, like you said, the topic is still relevant and people are still discussing it.

Now this? This is a gravebump lol.
