I was a fan of the linear fifth age stories, back when siding with deities had to be expressed through roleplay rather than dialogue choices in quests, and had near no consequences.
An example being defeating the Bandos avatar.
It starts with simply aiding those in need, despite ambitions and our preferences.
One could argue that they are a massive Bandosian, yet saved the cave goblins to prove themselves a worthier challenge to a Gods projection, further proving their philosophy.
Whether or not we supported the cause didn't matter as the story progressed regardless.
It even adds to the drama, What if Zamorak learns we reformed Zaros and Seren for instance?
In this case, I would side with Zaros simply because he 'always has a plan', even when the time comes we are no longer a useful asset. At least until a notable Godless stands up, I felt Nomad or V could have filled the void but they were both cut short or had other motives.
