It's possible Guthix was acting calm/rational in the moment when we informed him of his death, and only agonized over it later when he had time to think about it.

The more fun possibility is that someone else (possibly us again) traveled back to tell Guthix of his death at an even earlier moment in time, which is when he expressed his shock and grief. What if Guthix had a stream of time travelers telling him he'd die? Hilarious.
We'd only have to give a broad hint of our "victories" and that the world he wanted was coming and inform him in a later time travel incident, maybe to ask how to make more Guardians, but before the visit we go on in TLW and he would accept it calmly then I think. Just case of, so you want that special world of yours? All you have to do to get more than you imagine for Gilienor's people...well your part is easy.

That would explain how he told us we'd follow his path regardless of what god we chose to follow. He'd have known it for a fact as we told him, as our " apprentice" can verify it later when he takes over our job.

Everything we experience is linear, but only to us. Anyone we interact with on a temporal level is going to get brain-ache trying to keep up :P

What apprentice? Aeternam time travels to see us die, but that's it. She came before us and she's dead now. Although having a third WG wouldn't be a bad idea--if it were possible. Leaves a less sour note than "Oh BTW, in the epilogue you die and the world crumbles, kthxbye." XD Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

I'm not so sure that is how it works. I originally assumed that Aeternam was a being that traveled in time such that we met up with them in the wrong order. But there was an answer in the recent lore corner that has changed my opinion on this.

In response to being asked if we could meet Aeternam, Mod Stu responded:

They're a frozen witness, sharded across time, and you're not, so meeting them is...tricky. Don't come crying to me if you get turned inside out.

This makes me think that Aeternam is not a time traveller. Rather, I believe Aeternam is a being that experiences all of time (or at least all of this cycle) simultaneously. As such, I really wouldn't consider Aeternam dead. Rather, he/she/it has just lost that particular method of interacting with the world.

I'm also pretty convinced that Aeternam is the one who fed the information to make the Amserdrwys to the Trahaearn and subsequently removed that very same information.

Either him not knowing about the key at that time is a minor lorefail that they should retcon, or the "time traveler" mentioned was not us.

Was not originally us?

We know one of the followers that went into the Balance Elemental was a time traveler. Perhaps it was him originally meeting Guthix using the key that caused this panic?

Disturbing. They make it sound like we will meet them, outside of time. In some sort of distorted limbo.

Sounds like the Void from Dishonored.

It's possible that in future we will have informed him many years in the past about his death. Certainly it seems likely we're going to be doing more time travelling in future, both the Xau Tak and Robert the Strong storylines seem to hint at the possibility.

It also raises the question about the name we saw in the log at the asylum. If we travel back because we saw that we wrote our name there in the 2nd age does that create a paradox?

She's not dead. The rather returned to her home world.

Aeternam was the first World Guardian for Guthix and stopped the first God Wars by freezing it over.
She was fused with other druids to create the Balance Elemental and as the Elemental during WGS, said to us that they were at our funeral.

So it's possible upon defeating the Balance Elemental we freed Aeternam from the Elemental for her to attend our funeral, or the Elemental just has visions of the future, in particular our death.

I don't think it's been confirmed she is dead or not, but there are potential hints of her time-travelling I feel - unless she's immortal, then she's just very patient :P

Just because we finally die for real does not mean we failed. The Balance Elemental also calls our death glorious, and that we were even able to have a proper funeral at all suggests the world was not in immediate danger of ending. It also implies that we'd fulfilled our purpose, as Death is finally able to reap our soul and let us pass on.

If anything, this actually suggests to me that the story has a happy ending, maybe just not for us specifically.

I've been thinking, gods souls explode when they die, but he dumped an awful lot of power into us as he went. Admittedly it all revolves around defence, though we did manage to go God Mode on Sliske in the end and wipe the floor with him. So I was wondering, could he have been trying to put fast one and move on to "his afterlife" by trying to dump what would destroy him on us and hitch a ride...

Maybe Sliske got the idea to latch onto us from Guthix?

This is my fav theory so far.

Moreover, I would just like to point out (and ask a question at the same time, if that's possible), that we have died before... several times. Wouldn't it be possible for Aeternam to witness our death, to only watch us be reborn again?... and again... and again. (I hate the time chart thing. It's so confusing that, who's to say that we don't actually end up becoming the first World Guardian through some stupid mistake with all the time devices we have access to).

***Quick debate question:
When it says that Aeternam is sharded across time, does it mean that like, they have multiple forms of themselves across time (Like the Gypsy Aris Theory states), or is it kind of like, they are looking at a translucent, multifaceted mirror where every possibility is visible to them throughout all of existance?
