I've been thinking, gods souls explode when they die, but he dumped an awful lot of power into us as he went. Admittedly it all revolves around defence, though we did manage to go God Mode on Sliske in the end and wipe the floor with him. So I was wondering, could he have been trying to put fast one and move on to "his afterlife" by trying to dump what would destroy him on us and hitch a ride...

Maybe Sliske got the idea to latch onto us from Guthix?

While Guthix's initial reaction to learning he was going to die threw me off this theory a bit I do think he was refering to us being the person who told him he was going to die
___
The Guardians must be in place. He/She who told me of what is to come will be the one who completes them - they will serve me as I have served their people. I will show them what it was to be me, what I lost and what their duty will become. And they, in turn, will come to see me again and tell me of what will pass
___

Firstly the "he/she" would imply us as he cant say one gender as we are obviously not all male or female.
Secondly he says how he will "show them what it was to be me" which he did at the end of WW
Lastly he says "..who told me what to come will be the one who completes them" basically the one who told him of his death will be the one who will join them as a world guardian, aka us.

It's a theory but well founded i think.

In the Time engram he says that we will never see Aagi's smile again, and that he is lost. Pretty sure he was aware that on death that was it.
+1 to your interpretation.

I was just about to post the same thing you said there :P :D It does however seem perfectly natural/normal to me that Guthix, as well as most of the other gods, would initially be in shock upon receiving news of their own death.

Hey i've worried over ppl too much myself, and ended up becoming completely selfish and careless towards everyone bc i had have enuf at the time.

But now looke into this casket! It is quite old already but i just opened it again to share with the few of you... It contains such facts as all life comes from anima and goes back to it, and the supposed afterlife the jackal is leading ''mortals'' to is nothing but the heart.

No the reason why I was confused by it is that when we go back to the past and talk to Guthix, he is pretty calm about learning about his death.

Quote from the light within
"Player: I watched you die, Guthix. I couldn't save you.
Guthix: All things must die. That is the balance of life. For life to have meaning, it must be finite. The longer we live the more we realise that all things come to an end and that nothing is truly forever. It is mortality's greatest gift that things like friendship, peace and love can seem eternal. I have always known my death would come and it does not frighten me."

Also researching it seems guthix already knew of the key which he didnt in the engram echo

"Player: You know about the key?
Guthix: The Amserdrwys, yes. Seren and I discussed it in detail, she was very proud of the ingenuity of her elves. I cannot blame her, to step through time is a most impressive feat."

I think the thing that would make the most sense is that we weren't the first to go back in time to talk to Guthix (or someone returned to an earlier time) and it was them that told Guthix of his death initially and then when we came back it was like a confirmation

In the time echo, halfway through it says
"So it is to come, I can see that now. They have the Amserdrwys, and so it must be true; they will be my friend. It is not a fight I can win or one I wish to. Instead, I must accept what is to come"

So I think that the first part was about someone else and that when it gets to this part of the echo its slightly further in the future (for Guthix) and it's us he is talking about.

Only theory that makes sense to me...

.. I have to much time on my hands :P

That's exactly what threw me off too!
The fact Guthix remained so calm and nonchalant after literally just learning that he was capable of, and was going to die when we spoke to him; a vast difference from the panic we seen in his Time Echo, which was his inner dialogue.

That's why I thought the Time Echo must have came before TLW and not after, as to be so calm about it all just said to me he was aware of this already from someone previously telling him (the theorised Time-Traveller).

Sadly I do believe that the Time-Traveller was us, and TBH, we're just as 'scum-baggy' as Sliske; going back in time to tell Guthix that he is dead in the future, which ultimately lead to Guthix conceding to his demise and allow the real scum-bag Sliske to kill him.

Not only did it hurt us to watch Guthix die, but now we know that we were responsible for it

It's possible Guthix was acting calm/rational in the moment when we informed him of his death, and only agonized over it later when he had time to think about it.

The more fun possibility is that someone else (possibly us again) traveled back to tell Guthix of his death at an even earlier moment in time, which is when he expressed his shock and grief. What if Guthix had a stream of time travelers telling him he'd die? Hilarious.

Like Raleirosen said, I likewise think that it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that Guthix pretended to be calm in front of us, given that when we met him in TLW we were technically strangers to him instead of a close friend or confidant(e). Or perhaps he really started processing his thoughts regarding the news we brought him only after we left him in TLW.

Then again, it sounds plausible to me too that another time-traveler was the first to inform Guthix of his demise. Wonder if that time-traveler is Aeternam or someone else that has already been mentioned by name in official lore sources, hmm...

Guthix certainly doesn't strike me as the type to have an unemotional response to the news of his own death. Just about anyone would be shocked by this, but Guthix in particular has always seemed a very emotionally open type.

Regardless, it cannot be anyone other than the World Guardian he's referring to as informing him. The WG is pretty much universally referred to as "they" these days, but there's the telltale "he/she" that has been pointed out, and someone I was discussing this with on Reddit confirmed that it does change with the player's gender. There's really no other option.

Maybe Guthix's dialogue in the engram was just a delayed reaction? That makes more sense to me than deliberately trying to hide it. Being told you're going to die is an awful lot to process all at once. (Disclaimer: have not done The Light Within, people who have done so would probably be better able to work out how true this could be.)

... and while it seems pretty certain that the player was the first to tell Guthix of his death, I gotta say, I love the idea of "going back and telling Guthix about his death" being a time-travel cliche on Gielinor in the same way as "going back and killing Hitler" is on Earth. (Dammit, I've invoked Godwin's Law now, haven't I? RIP thread.)
