Nessie is the name Vanescula takes on when she disguises herself as a human child, Dragon :P
Actually, that's something I've never considered. How far do the vampyres' shapeshifting powers go? Why were the Myreque never infiltrated by vampyres disguised as humans? Is it a power reserved to the highest of vampyres? Again, what constitutes a greater vampyre?

Well, even if Ascertes' parents were Vampyres, Vampyrism doesn't pass through birth, according to the novels and if we treat it as canon until otherwise contradicted, so would still make him human. Unless he contradicted it at a later time which is completely possible.

And to Freolin, again spoilers for Legacy of Blood dontreadbelowifyoudontwanttobespoiled:

They were infiltrated by Vampyres disguised as humans at one point.

/spoiler

It's probably not something any old Vyrewatch can do though, I would guess reserved for the notable Vampyres.
You can only fully appreciate a story when you experience it through the eyes of one of its characters.

Yeah I hope their shapeshifting abilities are limited or extremely difficult to do. Would hate to have a load more shapeshifters around.
I find it interesting that they can shift to a more human form but she also shifts into a child. Perhaps they can change into any ages human they want?

Oh, that Nessie. :P I forgot about that disguise of her, which now gets me thinking about that book...
Spoilers for Legacy of Blood:
There were two little girls Gar'rth meets.
The first one was in a cramped space of two buildings, she tried to stay away from him, though he still helps her to hide. Later, Vanescula appears there, and Gar'rth finds blood everywhere (was the corpse there?).
The second one was in a cell with Gar'rth, because he was forced to starve until he decides to eat the girl. The girl kept talking about living at a mill (or farm I think), always said how she loved her pet dog. Later again, Vanescula is there, the girl appeared to be sleeping, and was said to be dying. When Gar'rth wakes up, he finds the girl dead (was the corpse there, or was it blood everywhere, I keep forgetting). Gar'rth's werewolf friend, M... something... I'm forgetting names... hints that he ate/killed the girl, not Gar'rth.

Those two had a somewhat involvement of Vanescula. What if she were those girls, shapeshifted, or she did the same procedure Vanstrom did in disguise, using the actual flesh? Could be anything, she's either a killer or a tormentor. Shapeshifting may require blood/special blood to the vampyres, it's supposed to give their youth too, doesn't it?

I really should buy those books anytime soon >.<...
And didn't I figure out that the general store owner and Lamescus are actually one and the same a while ago? :P
Seriously though, buying lore from that guy doesn't sound bad at all. If it's the only way to obtain some new lore these days, I'll be willing to pay for it for once. I still prefer the usual way though...

I suspect that shape-shifting is a power that only the highest-ranking Vampyres have access to, otherwise it would be too easy for the whole Vyrewatch to appear as humans and be able to infiltrate the Myreque at will.
----------------------------------------------------
Changing topic, I think it would be nice to see some sort of Morytania/Myreque tribute this Halloween. How about something to do with Count Draynor?
