that gets asked alot and the simple truth is no. you can compare other games to osrs but nothing will outstand it as a whole this community is stronger and more welcoming than any MMORPG. :)

Unfortunately, regardless of how optimistic/pessimistic a player or even the community is about a game, it is always how the developer make from the game matters.

If the community doesn't pay enough, Jagex won't have money to feed their staffs, upgrade equipement, and create content to compete with the other MMORPGs. Monetization, not how individuals or even the entire community think how stronger/weak the game is what matters.

Even more ironically the OSRS community is really dividing when OSRS put up the community/private service initiatives on their Future of OSRS Survey. We can see the true color of this community is stronger and more welcoming than any MMORPG" when desperate times come. A lot of them want OSRS to break up into many private servers. :D

All MMORPGs are going through the same pattern sadly, except a very few....that actually preserve the old school feel...

...as OSRS sadly doesn't, and has not for years now...

...enjoy it while you can, I simply could not anymore, although I will continue checking every few years to see if they've finally put Vanilla Servers with the OG OSRS on them, so I can enjoy it again.

While plenty of players are pondering if OSRS is dying or when it will be dead, I think we will only hear significant hints from Jagex when OSRS is near its terminal stage.

Actually I think Jagex themselves may not even have a clue how much longer OSRS can run, perhaps that's why they don't even have a roadmap or any future direction info to show since March this year.

While plenty of old MMORPGs have died, plenty of them still exist in maintenance mode with tiny profits. Perhaps OSRS won't be shut down after all. They can still exist in maintenance mode as a small part of Jagex portfolio if Jagex can monetize them. However, if OSRS really sell out to private sectors then there aren't many points left even for an OSRS in maintenance mode. They may just pull the puck and reinvest in plenty of projects, including many unannounced ones.

From page 4/60 of Jagex's 2021 financial report filed o Companies House:

"Old School RuneScape's product revenue decreased by 7% year on year".
while RS3's product revenue grew by 20%.

Thus, Jagex as a whole saw their 2021 net profits decreased by 5% year on year despite of posting a record revenue with a 4% grew year on year.

It doesn't mean OSRS is dead yet, but at least they saw the year on year grow of their product revenue in the red for the first time all these years.

Given there are quite a few positions that Jagex is hiring for to expand the Old School team on their Careers website, I highly doubt Old School would be closing any time soon.

Good luck on your goals if you choose to go for some 99s - its a grind, but can be great fun too.

It turned out OSRS actually didn't hire many new Jmods.

Mod Jon C the Product Manger left, but Mod Ash just picked up extra responsibilites and become also the (temporary) Product Manager.

Mod Lottie the product analyst left and she was replaced by none other than Mod Tyran who used to be familiar to most OSRS players as their goto anti-cheating specialist.

Mod Havik the content developer left and he was replaced by Manked, the OSRS Golden Gnome winning streamer.

A few other developers and analysts left too and they were replaced by internal transfers like Mod Surma the music composer.

Its interesting that you didn't quote the whole sentence because that would make your argument invalid.

"Old school runescape product revenue decreased by 7% year on year. this was in line with expectations from the notably high revenue during the COVID 19 related lockdowns in the prior year. The later part of the year, the successful launch of group ironman resulted in significant growth in membership which gave a strong finish to the year"
Found on page 4 paragraph 4.

https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/03982706/filing-history

In short it means that OSRS is doing fine and that it was able to bounce back slightly when group ironman came out.

It doesn't mean they are still not doing worse than the game industry and RS3: -7% growth comparing to -1.1 from the industry and +20% growth from RS3.

Essentially it means OSRS would be doing worse than even an already bad -7% growth if there wasn't GIM, and even further behind the growth rates of RS3 and the game industry by bigger margins.

How is my statement invalid?

OSRS just rehired former OSRS CM Sween not to be a CM, but to fill a vacated Marketer position.

Interesting, OSRS Jmod Musical Chairs continues. :)

Most MMORPGs are going through the same pattern, and their developers are also going through the similar diversification and M&A routes Jagex is going through now.

Jagex has gone out and bought SCUM's developer Gampires, and Pipeworks Studio. Mod Pips has also announced they have 2 soon-to-be-announced Runecape games. They have also signed with Snowcastles to publish their 3 games. We are also going to have Space Punks, Melvor Idle and This Means Warp. So we are going to have not just the 2 MMORPGs but lots of other non-MMORPG in the Jagex family soon.

Actually one of the 2 soon-to-be-announced Runescape games has become a survival game from the MMOARPG it used to be. It will be interesting to see what Jagex is turning into soon.
