Would you say the Osrs community is dying? I’ve got about 70-80 in nearly every skill and have had my mind on the 99 grinds. But not if jagex pulls the server in like a year. It would be a shame, IMO this is the best form of RuneScape currently.

The interesting thing is OP has apparently given up long ago after writing his post as his Hiscores show none of his skills are over level 75.

Obviously, OSRS is not "dead" today despite of sharp downturn in player engagement since OP. What I think is OSRS maybe "dead" in many players' minds whether they have already quit or not, or Jmods who have left OSRS for better career paths. The game may still not get shut down as long as Jagex has other sources of revenue outside OSRS. Only that OSRS will become smaller and smaller and more and more irrelevant in term of generating nominal revenue and net profits.

Reality check:

Even WoW Classic is promoting instant Level 70 Boost, so essentially the old school MMORPG concept of grinding is actually dead. Of course this will be a very interesting development to the survival of OSRS. Things may be getting very interesting soon.

It's not dying, it's just that no one wants to socialize at higher levels.

Why socialize at higher levels when anybody, any level can just keep restarting game modes like Leagues, GIM and DMM, and participate in minigames where levels don't mean a thing like LMS and PvP Arena?

that gets asked alot and the simple truth is no. you can compare other games to osrs but nothing will outstand it as a whole this community is stronger and more welcoming than any MMORPG. :)

Unfortunately, regardless of how optimistic/pessimistic a player or even the community is about a game, it is always how the developer make from the game matters.

If the community doesn't pay enough, Jagex won't have money to feed their staffs, upgrade equipement, and create content to compete with the other MMORPGs. Monetization, not how individuals or even the entire community think how stronger/weak the game is what matters.

To know what the scenario will be like when Jagex think OSRS is actually dying, perhaps we can learn something from a video featuring former OSRS Product Manager Mat K. Starting from 1:34:20, he started to talk about his conversations with Jagex management and the community regarding MTX:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuwxKo1mIpM

He said multiple people from Jagex have told him OSRS was dying. They would have to add MTX or the product would lose funding and employees. Mat K told them they couldn't add MTX because the community would see it very negatively. We knew shortly Mat K and many OSRS Jmods left Jagex shortly afterward. Fortunately for OSRS though, WoW Classic revived nostalgic games briefly and then Covid-19 saved the game that time.

It will be very interesting to see if the next time when Jagex higherup tell the OSRS Product Manager the game is dying and they need to add MTX, whether they will add MTX or they have another plan.

How hard is it to understand far more people want to play free? If Jagex stop combatting suicide botting and Real world trading by removing the F2P trade limit their "server population" will certainly explode. However, free playing bots/RWTers don't feed Jagex and their staffs on one hand and severely affect the integrity of the game and discouraging real paying patrons on the other, hence RS3 goes with more MTX, higher growth rate and less concurrent players.

At least we never heard of any current or former RS3 employees spilling the beans that Jagex told them RS3 was dying and they must put MTX there to keep their services and support funded and employees employed... because they added MTX themselves knowing it was the best way for the company and themselves.
