It's certainly less now than it used to be. I'm also not sure as what kind of a website that is that you're basing your findings on and how trustworthy it is as I can't see the code for it.
Looking at the graph then on a long haul it has been growing and has been quite a bit more volatile later on. Probably upwards spikes are connected to larger updates I presume although I'm too lazy too look these up. The last spike I guess is because of GIM.

This needs a bit more time to gather info on it and check on player feedback on what has made them turn away. Could be just that the spikes throw it off. The fall between January 2021 and July 2021 is more what worries me as it falls lower than the expected steady growth number and only rises with a spike.

The "upward spike" from GIM is already fading after only 2 weeks. Even with such temporary "spike", OSRS still is not hitting 200,000 like you thought or 173k OSRS hit last year.

"Larger updates"? GIM is not really a larger update at all. It is still exactly the same old content only by grouping 2-5 players together. Every online game can do that easily, and the fact they don't tells us they don't think it is worth the time to spend big to promote an altscape gimmick just for the "spike" of a couple of weeks.

I don’t think they were saying GIM was a larger update. They said the last spike was from GIM and the spikes before were from larger updates.

Hmm well I don't have the statistics for the last two weeks nor does the graph you provided show it. I haven't kept much of an eye on the player number other than I belive two days ago the counter on mainpage was over 200 000. I believe for OSRS it was 150k that day but I can't be sure so I won't say that with certainty. It really depends on when you're online. Some parts of the world play Runescape more than others.

I include under the term "larger updates" stuff that is hyped up, long waited, gets promoted a lot. Also actually large updates but that's not the point here.

Yep, thanks! The point was to compare the stuff that might bring people in.

DXP Live brings players in for RS3 too, but I doubt if many people think it is any "larger updates". :D

Well DXP is only like.. once a year? Not that often.

Anyway getting kind of off-topic I guess. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, new coronavirus waves might bring more people :D

No. DXP is very common. It is once every 4 months, much like a seasonal event. Really no "big update", at least from the perspective of RS3.

I pray to Guthix Covid-19 is behind us, and I hope OSRS has a plan to survive other than hoping for new waves of Covid-19.

What I've been trying to say for years at this point is OSRS needs new content.

I think everybody was riding on the nostalgia train back in 2013 when a generation of kids turned adults went back to the game they loved playing. After the first six months or so that nostalgia faded away. Jagex decided to add new exclusive content for OSRS, including a slayer dungeon, the Kraken, Zulrah, new achievement diaries, a new level of clue scroll (Elite, Master) and the Raids.

All of that was a good thing. New content being implemented into the game while still retaining that old school feel more or less.

OSRS is just boring now. It feels dead, despite the influx of people joining after OSRS hit the mobile game market and the COVID-19 pandemic. Content from years ago that Jagex added onto OSRS hasn't had any changes in a long time.

I can't see myself ever returning to OSRS, but even if I were a fairly new player, in its current state I don't see me playing for more than a few weeks before quitting.

This game is already going where pre-EOC era Runescape was going a decade ago. Players who are completed maxed out and have a Max Skill Cape have little to no reason to keep playing.

Every time I have suggested a new skill or a new training method for OSRS over the years my suggestions get shot down because every other person tells me Jagex would have to rewrite the entire game in order for that new skill or new training method to be properly implemented. So I completely gave up on the general public.

New skills, new quest lines that make us do things differently, nobody wants that. They're too comfortable doing what they want to do and aren't willing to change. Another reason why I left this game.

There are more and more online games in 2021 than 2007. Every game will need quality content and not just spending big money on marketing gimmicks to survive. Unfortunately, I see OSRS is all on the second route. As such even more content and not just Leagues 3 is now delayed to 2022 in favor of marketing gimmicks and prayers for Covid-19 and such:

"Bosses are going to be very exciting for the Wilderness. Unfortunately, these features will now not appear in-game until 2022, for which we apologise."
