OSRS won't die unless RS3 starts dying. It's a symbiotic relationship.

That's like saying Casett tapes won't fade away so long as people still buy CD's.
It doesn't work like that.
Kids who sign up for RS3 aren't going to be interested in old-school.
Especially as broken as it is.

Look at what happened to WoW.
I don't think they are selling Classic to their new player base.
They made the game fun for kids who didn't want to try, we left, and literally made our own copies of the original.

I hear there are private OSRS servers already. =/
I think the company should get to profit off their game so they can pay for proper professional upkeep and everybody wins. But, if the competition becomes better than the original product just by being more authentic.... It's really a no brainer.

OSRS is not going to be shut down any time soon. However, seeing how little the return Jagex is getting comparing to the other online games, from paying AAA level of money to sponsor similar influencers and their crews to play OSRS, it should be a decisive remark to the company themselves this game has way passed the point of diminishing return.

It's very doubtful OSRS is dying , imo :P . If anything, again imo (as someone whom plays both on this same account), RS3 feels more in danger.

How so? RS3 has MTX and can always put more MTX or even totally eliminate membership and rely 100% on MTX. RS3 also doesn't rely on spending huge money on advertising and sponsoring streamers.

If OSRS is going to avoid being shutdown, I can see it will go the RS3 way of stuffing plenty of MTX in the game and go lean and mean on unnecessary and ineffective advertisements.

This thread is almost half a year old but evidently OSRS hasn't died yet.

Let's look at how OSRS's concurrent players of each month on a year-to-year comparison since the creation of this thread:

Oct 2021 (as of Oct 18) 79,152
Oct 2020 94,835

Sept 2021 65,118
Sept 2020 86,627

Aug 2021 64,664
Aug 2020 87,099

July 2021 60,076
July 2020 91,856

June 2021 63,082
June 2020 101,259

May 2021 73,092
May 2020 112,160

April 2021 77,991
April 2020 113,138

https://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/?display=avg&interval=month&total=1

Rest assured, OSRS has been on the decline every single month in 2021 comparing to 2020 since this thread was created, but there is still no sign it is going to be shut down soon. I'll say it is going to last into some point in 2022 before desperate times come and MTX will follow. :)

Yeah, that's a lot less people playing than even just a year ago.
Losing 20-40% in a year is not good.

Especially when you consider that full time (human) gold farmers have been on the rise and that a lot of those 60-80K are bots.

Will they shut it down? Yeah, eventually, But not until it stops turning a profit.

But is it dying? It sure isn't growing or staying the same,
It sure isn't more fun to play than it use to be
It sure isn't being maintained and kept authentic.

I mean... what would you call that if it were a houseplant?

I'm really glad I saw this before I put any more time into my account or talking about fixing things on the forum.

But hey, it was fun while it lasted. As usual, people who have other priorities get the shaft and never get to live their dreams in game, but I figure that will pay off IRL in the long run.

Maybe we can make a revamp in 20 years when the copywrites expire.

Pretty sure OSRS isn't going anywhere, so long as there is drama, PKing, and virtually endless amounts of war crimes you can commit across Gielinor, OSRS will not die.

Drama, What drama?

War crimes? Feels more like we're the Chinese prisoners farming gold for hours on end while someone else makes real money.

And PKing? I don't even PK but they shut down the PVP worlds, they are removing the arena, the tournament was ruined by lag and they just kind of shrug.

I hate to say it, but even the people saying that it won't die are depressing me and telling me it's time to let it go. =/
