Wasn't the game considered the third most played mmorpg of the year 2021?

It depends on who "considered" it. All the close to 300 mil registered Runesape players may have 300 mil different answers.

I guess you may be looking up some numbers from a certain website which thinks OSRS alone has over 30 millions total players. Regretfully, the last known official reported total active players of RS3 and OSRS combined was about 8 million total players and 1.2 millions of them were members.

There are several videos made about the top MMORPGs in 2021 or +- few years and they always bring out Runescape. Looking at Steam reviews then people seem to like it :D There is almost always more than 70 000 people online and at top hours and when new stuff gets added it sits around 200 000. Of course some others MMORPGs are quite a far ahead so trying to catch the nr 1 position is not that easy.

I'm not sure on the 3rd most played but most defenitely high up there on population and quality.

I don't think OSRS ever hit 200,000 concurrent players in 2021, let alone "sits around 200,000". This site shows the highest concurrent OSRS players in 2021 is 123k, a far cry from the 173k last year (which also was far from 200,000):

https://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/?display=max&interval=month&total=1

Don't forget even indie games like Melvor Idle Jagex just picked up publishing sits with over 2k Steam players, and that's more than OSRS's Steam numbers already. :)

Depends on which statistic they used. An overall year from previous year or rather a statistic from few months from current year. Although this is a a thread about OSRS then what I meant was 200 000 people from both games. Usually more people in the Old School. Just now on a Sunday morning it's 50 000 people. Anyway that is quite a lot for MMOs right now to have. With the exception of those giants. The Grumpy Estonian

Overall concurrent players from BOTH RS3 and OSRS doesn't mean much for the survival of OSRS, unfortunately. OSRS's numbers are certainly dropping every month rapidly on a year-to-year basis since OP (Page 3, Post 7) and although RS3 is faring quite a bit better than OSRS it is not really rocking the MMORPG industry either.

I don't think I need to go in circle and state the very obvious from Page 4 and show RS3 and OSRS are TWO different games with very different sentiments and abilities to adapt, change and survive.

The fact that Jagex's new games are already doing better than OSRS on platforms like Steam isn't insignificant. It shows Jagex is already turning to other channels other than OSRS for revenues and profits. Jagex Partners will announce even more games in the coming months. This will be a double edged sword for OSRS. On one hand, OSRS players will have more games to play when they are tired with and leave OSRS, but on the other hand when Jagex make more money from other games OSRS may be able to live longer on lower playerbase and revenue.

Reality check:
Since the quoted post, Jagex has also put Space Punks in open beta and announced It means Warp as well as Runescape: Shadow of Elvarg. Of course, they also raised the membership price to $12.5 from $11. Let's see what's next...

It's certainly less now than it used to be. I'm also not sure as what kind of a website that is that you're basing your findings on and how trustworthy it is as I can't see the code for it.
Looking at the graph then on a long haul it has been growing and has been quite a bit more volatile later on. Probably upwards spikes are connected to larger updates I presume although I'm too lazy too look these up. The last spike I guess is because of GIM.

This needs a bit more time to gather info on it and check on player feedback on what has made them turn away. Could be just that the spikes throw it off. The fall between January 2021 and July 2021 is more what worries me as it falls lower than the expected steady growth number and only rises with a spike.

That is usually what happens for games during the warmer months. Now that school is back in session numbers tend to stay down until winter and school breaks.
