Sometimes, it's just time for a change, and very soon the perfect opportunity will arise to refresh your RuneScape identity.

From 13th March, we'll be releasing the character names of inactive accounts . If there's a name that you've had your eye on for some time, this could be your chance to claim it as your own!

We'll be releasing a letter a day, starting with the letter A. Numbers will be released together on one day.

When each name release happens, it'll be announced on social media channels – follow us on Facebook , Twitter , Reddit and the RuneScape forums , and keep an eye out for your letter!

To claim a name, you must be a RuneScape member , and can do so in-game via the Summary tab of the Hero interface, or by logging into the Account section of the website and finding the Change Character Name tab. We recommend changing your name in-game whenever possible.

Updates will happen between 14:30 and 15:30 UTC. As well as RuneScape membership, there is a minimum requirement of 250 total level to claim a released name.

If you've changed your name recently, don't forget that you can remove the time limit with a Bond .

There's this particular character name i've been wanting since forever. The names not on hiscores, there is no known player with it yet when i try to change my name to it, it's not available.

To take matter into another level i attempt to create a new character with that name and it says "name is banned". Although i doubt it, will banned names be free'd up by this so called "name release"? The particular character name i want isn't anything offensive, or a popular banned account so i find it unfair how i'm not allowed to have a character name i want :(

Thanks for the info, but if this is all of the details, there are two things that kinda suck about this:

1. If you have a list of multiple names that you'd like to have (to play it safe, just in case you don't get the name you most wanted), there's a good chance that some of the less wanted names will be freed up first before the most wanted one. Needless to say, that can lead to some difficult decisions.

2. If the only requirement to claim a name from the cleanup is to have a member account, this is too easily bypassed by the name hoarders, sellers etc.
