Oh my god, you're the perfect example of everything's that wrong with the current generation, instant gratification and the inflated sense of entitlement. I played this game since 2004, and played nearly everyday for 3 years and then occasionally during the high school in the late 2000s, and now in I drop by maybe once a year or less to check up on what I missed. So I gotten a name back when this game was relatively new, and deserve it every bit.

And now a new player who started playing Runescape in 2014 and plays a lot for a couple of month, thinks they deserve a name from a true veteran that is still loyal but doesn't have much time as kids do? Or even if that person isn't a veteran, they shouldn't even lose their name. I probably will never lose my names because I do drop in once in a while, though there is no set schedule. But I'm speaking for those who perhaps played years ago but could come back, just to find out Jagex stabbed them in the back for more money just to please new players, abandoning old player's interest, same as they are doing just rereleasing bunny ears and whatever holiday items new players missed because they didn't played during the past.

We're looking at in the region of 50 million+ total.
Broken up into maybe 4-5 batches. But I can't confirm that yet, we've still got some prep to do before we can confirm quantities, batches and release times.

So, they're going to be making a list of, say, 10 million names at a time? Yeah, I would say some serious prep needs to go into this...

Can people not see that name cleanups need to happen? Its hard enough to find an available name as it is let alone in 5+ years when the only names you'll be able to get require a whole bunch of numbers.

Yes i agree that people who have been inactive and come back will be upset and may not even want to play because their name has been "stolen", but they cant expect to leave for 2 years and come back and everything to be the same again.

And about having a total skill level to be able to take advantage of this feature is rather silly. "I'm maxed therefore i'm better than you".

There are 50 million names becoming available. I doubt that even 500k of those have ever had members. So you still will get 49.5 million new names to choose from, and nobody will be ticked off.

This way Jagex won't be shooting themselves in the foot stopping old members from returning. (Again I reiterate, if I returned after a 2+ year leave of absence, which I have done twice, and found my name got stolen from me, I WOULD NOT PLAY THE GAME.)

k... Jagex, why are BANNED accounts still keeping their names?

I have an account that was BANNED like... 4 months ago? I have to wait 2 FU--ing years????

I leave with this, BANNED accounts aren't exactly using their names are they?

It ignores the ban, and simply counts the time since their last login (which would be the time since the start of the ban).

My understanding of the answer Balance gave here ^ is that banned names will still be released - the fact that they're banned doesn't even come into the release process, except for the fact the last login dates for banned accounts is the date that they were banned.

Haven't been in for nearly a year due to real life intruding. I do plan to return, so I thought I'd best log in after I got that E-Mail about the Accounts Cleanup.

Right now, personal matters are keeping me from taking the necessary time to get back into the game, but as General McArthur once said, I SHALL return.

This! ^ Hope to see you rejoin the game one day. :) Glad your name won't be taken.

One of the good things about the update is that mule accounts are likely to use throwaway/disposable emails, or emails which their owners will never check again.

You would expect people who have old accounts with 'good' names, ones that are perhaps their login names, would have used their main/primary email account for that account, so they are likely to be aware of Jagex's plan to release their name, and if they really care, they can login to stop it.
