I have supported Jagex recently in a lot of the things that players didn't like... but this is a bad move.

First of all, security is only secure as long as people use it. People only use it if it is simple and functional. This is freaking complicated. Looking at the comments even people who WANT to do this can't because they don't have a smartphone. If they do have a smartphone, they can't download the apps. That's not security because it isn't functional.

Second, you can't protect stupidity. I've created and managed online accounts for over 13 years, my Runescape account being 10+ years old and I've had the same email since I was 9 years old. Never had an account compromised. Obviously, I do something different to protect myself. You can't make people protect their account. Especially if they don't have smartphones. You should empower us to be able to protect our account, but in the end, account security is our responsibility.

Third, JAG was fine. Players seemed happy with it to me. Obviously Jagex has the stats, not me, this is just my observation. As I mentioned in another thread: my bank account is easier for me to get into, and it is more secure. This authenticator things is not only too complicated, it's unnecessary.

I was wondering...what's the logic behind taking away JAG? It's the best non in-game update you, Jagex, have released in such a long time, something that helped revive my interest in this game. What is wrong with keeping both this new security thing "Authenticater" and JAG? Give us the freedom to choose which we'd like to use? Or how about "Power to the players" bit you were going on about, Jagex? Put an in-game poll in if you should keep JAG or not, see how everyone who doesn't bother going onto the forums responds. Sorry to be blunt about this but I am extremely dissatisfied.

Question: Is the google authenticator changing the code about every 45 seconds going to eat up my battery? Or is there a way to stop it from updating the code since I've got it on trusted for 30 days...

this is just a huge slap to the face for ppl that arent rich enuf to afford a smartphone like myself and could use jag weres this seems to be a step back or a way to tell there "poor" player base to start dropping gold bricks :@ (ahhhhhh it hurts so much!!!!!) or say good bye to ur account/'s extra security (pheeeeeeew...booom hack attack!!).....why are updates like this half assed? think about all players not just the wealthy


----i have a spark 1 phone---- (also a smartphone emulator on my pc but i doubt itd work i doubt i could scan the screen w/o useing camera mode and if i did have 2 id have to hook up a web cam just for it to work) so....2 minutes is a load of bull more like 2 hours of figureing how todo this w/o an over priced peice of plastic junk

sincerly, one of rs's loyal low income vet players ^_^

ps, looking out for all but the big man (bc all he wants is more money) ;) jack of all trades, always willing to help those in need. we care about our communities. ;)

Now please explain to me how placing everything on a single PC (new Authenticator used on the same PC as the RS account) is more secure than placing everything on a single PC (old JAG).
Now that we've established that both are similarly secure, we can move on to see that both have different weaknesses. In the first case, you need to install yet another freaking piece of software. In the second case, you need to memorize (or write down) a series of "secret" answers to a bunch of questions. Please understand that some people may prefer one option over the other. Congratulations, now you know why it's better to keep both systems instead of only either of them!

This. Keeping both systems hurts noone, it only gives more options to everyone to get security the way they prefer it. Disabling JAG is a gift to account hijackers.
