To compare the type of active user counter matrix that only the gods of RuneScape know what that number represents on RSOF to the Reddit active user counter matrix, that is, in my opinion, overstated, seems more like an excuse than an explanation to me.

Imbalance?

Yeah, there definitely is an imbalance. There's no denying that Reddit is an active fansite, but user counters are the main point of comparison when it comes to activity and the user counters are very misleading.

The forums average ~35k-40k posts per week whereas /r/RuneScape averages ~15k posts per week.

As usual, a well written and researched thread from Winds, which is indeed thought-provoking.

I have a theory about why the 'fansite' alluded to seems to be more attractive to JMods than does the RSOF and it has nothing to do with the population of players on each. However, if I gave it here I know my post would be hidden so there's no point.

Not really, CM seems to have to bow to a number of other aspects. It took them ages to develop the code of conduct we have now when it changed absolutely nothing but was just a better wording of the current (then and now) rules.

If that explanation provided by Mod Balance is based on the current active user counter number

Jmods can see much more then just the active numbers. They have demonstrated that they can see unique posts numbers (in a given time period), unique posters, unique threads and more. They probably even have an accurate view of whos on the forums when since they can see lurkers not even logged in if they dig enough - your IP has to request the forum page each time it change to a different thread or forum.

I mean, the cynic in me figures Kalaya is just bowing to pressure. CM is useless on this front because we in W&F already know how the web team works. No BS feedback thread will actually lead to changes when the "list of good ideas" for the forums is 10 miles long and 100 years in development.

Where do you think the pressure is coming from?

Many of the non-technical changes can be quite easily implemented I imagine.

Ha they couldn't even update stickies or fix FSR in a timely manner. Everything good we want is technical. They're kind of stuck dealing with anti-fmod riots and Kalaya's own track record kind of leads me to believe those sorts of things won't be fixed easily. The pressure recently from reddit was like 99% anti-moderation. It's not a coincidence we just got that feedback thread. That thread and other feedback collection by CM is INNATELY useless because unless Kalaya can use her billable hours to code us forum updates then what will become of it? She can only really take feedback on moderation or other non-technical stuff that is of less import.

Like I said, we already know how the web team works. Nothing short of CM completely overriding their schedule and proclaiming to Allstar "now you work on this or die" we won't see that feedback amount to anything in the near future.

It makes a lot of sense for the Community Management to allocate their time to the areas where they reach the most players and obtain the most responses. There is no denying that the best place to do that today is on Reddit - and not the forums.

Yet, it is important to note how people will follow Jagex Moderators. Thus, if J-Mod activity on one platform drops, overall activity on said platform will decrease accordingly. This is what has happened on the forums. I feel like a signification portion of issues we are currently facing would be resolved merely by the Community Management team changing priorities slightly - if anything temporarily to see if things change.

I think in that regard it is also important to analyse what is working really well on the other platforms. On thing in particular is how it is a lot easier on Reddit to see where J-Mods have commented - something similar should be implemented on the forums. I believe this would increase overall engagement and thus activity.

Since 2008/09 Andrew Gower (and his brothers) decide to not go through with RuneScape a huge shift has been forced through Jagex & The RuneScape Community which caused the Community Management Team of that time to start dismantling that Team slowly, and make us willingly or unwillingly meet up with Social Media. At that time a lot had to be done to reinstate a new Community Management Team that was totally focussed on Social Media and dumped The RSOF as a whole. Frankly they haven’t the upright knowledge nor skills to quickly bring the necessary knowledge how to run The RSOF properly.
Many programmers of today are not capable to handle older software because they never took the time to learn how it was constructed and why, what purposes it had and how it could be extended easily. Programmers of today only have outstanding skills with add-ons and newer software but they have a hard time to connect the old software onto the newer software.
So basically The RSOF was screwed from the day RuneScape changed from its owner.
The ‘Old’ Community Team was dismantled and the new Team wasn’t quite up to this job, or simply didn’t wanted to do their jobs as they focussed on newer Social Media tools / -channels.
The only thing that was allowed was that Volunteer Workers were given daily control of The RSOF to keep it alive and running and this far they have done their best with The RuneScape Community, like it or not, without them everything stopped existing many years ago.
Since 2001 the support Jagex always could depend on was ‘slammed out of the air’ which opened a door for Southern Companies to make steps on the World Market as leading Companies.
It was quite easy for FaceBook, Twitter, Reddit etc. etc. (all Silicon Valley Companies together with Google at the background) to do everything with us at their demand.
