The more you dull realism in a fantasy & realism setting, the more absolute bull**** people pull - much to the
dislike
of the rest involved.
Realism supplements ''fantasy badassery'' much more than you may think it hurts. A lot of spells, realistically, have enough of their own ability to kill someone, and then roleplayer insists their armor-less berserker can tank a fire surge and keep on fighting. Without realism, a roleplayer can insist that large earth spell that just wrecked their shield managed to do absolutely nothing to their arm, when it'd be severely dislocated, if not broken. From the defender's view, what they just did was totally badass. From the attacker's, the defender rofled to avoid being injured. Pulling off those heavy hits and amazing combos is always a two-way street, keeping the other person behind the keyboard in mind is a must.
You're more than welcome to prefer that people hold to more relative standards of how much harm something can do, especially if you like fights that almost no one can win as two or more people all run different standards at the same time, followed by much lamented OOC ragefests. This characterized a lot of 2012.
