What really needs to happen is that people need to get off their fat ass and ride a bicycle for short distances instead of taking their car to go anywhere and everywhere.

Get with the 21st century. Civilised countries now have considerable energy generation from solar and wind power - as well as other renewable sources.

There are already cobalt free lithium ion battery
LiFePO4 is cobalt free but has low energy density
There are ultra low cobalt content NCM lithium ion battery
And many other kinds of batteries coming
Sodium ion batteries is also coming
I agree that the most environmental friendly way of transportation is bicycle for short distance travel
use train transport for longer distance travel, use bicycle from starting point to train station and from train station to destination
that is what happening in Japan
