So .... we in the UK are being told we can have Christmas with 3/4 other households (details to be confirmed).
No doubt infection rates will rise again even further shortly thereafter and we'll be placed into regional lockdowns, yet again, which will be even stricter than hitherto. For the sake of a turkey dinner.
Other sectors of the population have had to forego traditional religious gatherings and celebrations already this year but it seems unthinkable that those Christmas crackers don't get pulled
To be fair i think they have to do this, as so many will flout strict guidelines, they wouldnt be able to uphold things.
It may just be a turkey dinner to you and me, but a lot of people rely on christmas as the only time the family get together..
Remember Caz. Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I really can't condone the lifting of restrictions for the Christmas period, especially as it is thought that for every day without them, five days with them is required to recover. It's one year, vaccination is around the corner and preventing the spread is meant to be a national effort. People could just as easily get together in the Summer instead.

I'd love to open up but the sad truth is the people complaining about 'lockdown' are the same snowflakes moaning about having to take measures to avoid it. People who refuse to wear masks due to that "my body, my choice" rubbish - in reality failure to wear a mask is impacting on someone else's health/body. It's just a selfish attitude from unqualified buffoons who like to believe they know more than the scientists who study this kind of thing day to day.

Although it seems that the UK is going to allow Christmas get togethers I'm undecided. I would love to have my sons back home for a few days ( that would be 3 households ) BUT if its just a matter of waiting a few months until me and my husband can get vaccinated then maybe its best to wait. We're in one of the age groups that will get done before the general population. Actually, at the moment I'm not but by the time that group is lining up for the jab I might have had my birthday
. My husband passed that age this year.

Yes I agree absolutely that the majority of people would, indeed, have entirely ignored any Govt restrictions during the Christmas period and it would have been impossible to do much about that from a Policing point of view.
But this whole thing has made me sit back and question ... what's it all about, really?
I enjoy the Christmas period with it's decorations and lights and generalised jolliness but, as a non-Christian, the religious aspect is absent for me (and mine). It may be presumptuous of me to ponder that for the majority of baptised Christians, the religious significance is absent or at least a very, very small part of their Christmas. Except for very religious folk but they can surely go to church and praise the Lord any time they choose.
As for seeing family at Christmas - why not get together at some point during the other 360 days of the year? Most countries have one or two other Public Holidays (?) which free folk up from work/school commitments, or they could use a few days of their annual leave/school holiday closure time.
Travel costs would be lower as it wouldn't be in the peak Xmas period, and easier since transport services would not be winding down to closure. Presents could be given, meals eaten, beverages consumed, games played, movies watched - whatever families are inclined to do at Christmas gatherings can be done, well, anytime I'd have thought.
So, apart from the fact it's kind of conditioned into people to meet up with relatives at Christmas - I'm not really seeing why it should be such a big hoo-ha specifically at that time of the year. What's wrong with February?
I know all that sounds a bit off topic but it's loosely related to the Covid Christmas restriction easing.
I usually see various people dropping by the house around Christmas time (old habits die hard for some) but this year I've made it clear .... no visitors, thank you.
And lastly, for now, just read that the Oxford vaccine is 90% effective. The headlines I read a few days ago claimed 95% (or 98%, can't remember).
So I owe an apology to the poster Inspire You since I disagreed with his/her claim in that regard - only the Russian vaccine was down at 90% at the time I posted.
I've got a sneaking suspicion that these claims are going to vary more as time goes on ......
