im pretty sure there was a gardening thread before, however i cant find it. if anyone does please post qfc and we will go back to that one.

however!!

I've never been interested in gardening. However ive always wanted a carnivorous plant, and a few weeks ago i bought my first one. and now thats opened me up to the possibility i will love to garden.

this thread can be used for anything thats gardening related.

the plant i bought is Dionaea muscipula (venus fly trap). and its awesome to look after
right now it is in the start of its winter dormancy and will be in this state untill February.


however let me know your gardening stories / wants / needs

im starting to get a feel for greenfingers. as it is rather relaxing and nice even though i have one plant currently. theres a whole new world out there that i havent dabbled in that i want to now.

this is my venus fly trap


traps turn black after a while, and after they have fed more than 3 times. which is normal.

hopefully in its next growing season (feb - august) it will get 4times as much traps on and be a big bushy scary mess. but as of right now it has shed a few heads to go into its sleep

The main idea for growing exotic flowers is to influence the taste when honey farming.

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on some of that honey produced in the Buckingham Palace gardens.

I know it is expensive, yet it would be a nice treat. Another renegade Rat-Lord from the Master pond of scum.

it eats a lot of stuff not just flies. the picture shows it having a daddy long legs (you can see the legs out)(top left)
in fact it rarely has flies its mainly spiders / beetles / caterpillars / ants. its just the name is venus fly trap... for whatever reason.

the flower it grows is incredibly long so it helps with not eating bees when polination. it would be more attracted to the flower which is going to be towering above the danger that lies below. but yes it can eat a bee.


i like honey but wouldnt spend a lot of money on it. i just buy the standard honey for sweetness.

One thing I learned from bitter experience with Venus Flytraps... only give them distilled/filtered water (or natural rainwater).

The minerals in tap water can clog up their very fine roots, and kill the plant.

indeed i have many many containers outside collecting rain water. (being in england) i hope i will have a surplus of it.

I remember the gardening thread but also can't find it. ;)

As for the Venus Fly trap I had 1 as a kid many years back and loved that plant. Used to catch flys for it and give it them now and then.

1 day I couldn't get any flies or anything so gave it a tiny bit of bacon. Really bad idea as a few days later the plant died. I miss that plant as it was quite big.

My nephew has 1 now in his bedroom and been telling him how to look after it. Well better then how I looked after mine.

Also yes no tap water. Poor things hate it.

Also I love gardening and do as much as my poor glass back will allow me too. These days thoughs it's getting less and less each year. Garden still looks nice and I have huge plans for next year all ready in my head.

I even have seeds for next year all ready to plant once the time is right. These seeds are wild flowers for the bees and other insects that will lobe them. Should be a good show once planted and grown. Can't wait to see them.

Next few weeks I need to do a lot of gardening to set the garden up for next year. Meaning cutting down my lavender and my gladioli plants as I have 100's now. Only planted 20 or so lol. Bloody things breed like hell. Just not sure where I'll plant their offspring.

Just hope my back is upto it.... :P

If my garden is full of flowers I can then take macro pictures of them. Another hobby of mine. Comprehensive Account Security

@ Tuffty I have a bad back too. I can garden for a max of 1 hour on a good day but more often its just half an hour and some days none at all. I've realised I need to be

careful how I move for the first half hour after I get up in the morning. Its as if my muscles "wake up" more slowly than my brain. :P
I used to be OK at gardening but for the past 10 years or so a lot of shrubs and herbacious plants die after a year or so. Plants aren't cheap so its kinda putting me off trying to change things in the garden.

One other piece of advice I can give you for your VFT Tenebri is do not fertilize it. I finaly had to prune my beloved rose bushes back today.

Going to start some more midnight blood roses inside this year, as well as some more Mr. Lincolns.

Another bit of advice for a novice gardener Tenenbri, succulents. Those are a noob gardeners best friend. Low maintence, and some of them are very pretty, and some are just plain odd looking, such as my devil's spine. Don't ever think the reason I am peaceful is because I do not know how to be violent.
