@ Tenebri I've never had a venus fly trap so I can't offer any tips for looking after it. Succulents are good to try, an interesting one is the stone plant...yep, it looks like a pebble! If you want to try a non succulent plant then an easy one is Spider Grass. Its very easy to look after except you can kill it with over watering....my excuse is that I had 2 young children at the time so didn't pay much attention to my house plants. :P

I love gardening!

As an oldie I can't do as much as I used to so I'm in the process of replacing the annual flowers with perennials, but here's a few pics of some of my garden (it's on different levels)

Fifi, your garden is beautiful! I wish mine looked as good. We had a large Mahonia charity cut down last year and we still don't know what to put in the 6ft by 6ft patch we got back. Its in the south west corner and is shaded by 6ft tall fences. The stump from the shrub is still there because its too big for us to dig up (we're also oldies ). Its 10 inches in diameter with large roots spreading out. I have wondered if we should put a small wall around it, put a paving slab on top then stand a statue on it. :P
I also like your cat in the last picture. :) Does he/she supervise you when you work in the garden? Lol. When we had a cat she used to watch what I was doing.

Thank you :) A couple of those pictures are a few years old now - I must find some newer ones! - and sadly the cat (Molly) is no longer with us. She used to delight in stalking me whilst I was working and launching 'surprise' attacks from the undergrowth.

She was a Rescue kitten and partly blind from 'Flu, then developed arthritis very early so never left the garden. I later put her ashes in a big pot and planted a rose bush in it called "Our Molly".

We had a huge Mahonia Charity too! I loved the winter flowers but it just got soooo big we had to cut it down - the stump started sprouting again a few years later so every year we have to chop it again. I feel a bit awful doing it, seeing as it's still alive and struggling to grow :(

We've got dreadful soil here; heavy clay riddled with enormous flints and shaded on two sides by woodland so I don't bother with a lawn and am limited in what I can plant (hence the containers everywhere!) but I've got some gorgeous huge Hostas in the shady bits (constant slug warfare) together with large flowered begonias and honeysuckle for colour.

I've been playing around with other shade plants this year; Bugle has done really well, Welsh Poppies like it, Columbine and Heuchera are happy enough ... it's my challenge for next year.

I'm a Daddy lol.

First time ever growing chillies on a shaded windowsill.

Had 15 or so plants in 1 pot and just cut some down so I left 3 to grow on. Nicked the seeds from my parrots cage to see if they would grow. I'm happy with the result. Can't wait to try them out and eat them myself as well as give my parrots fresh chillies. They love them.

I think next year I'll grow outside in the sun and rain.

I'm still happy though with the results. Never grown them before and they are sooooooo simple to grow.

Well done Tuffters!!

I've never grown fruit or veg apart from some tomatoes and strawberries. I've always wanted to give it a go but lack the time to tend a crop properly, the soil is dreadful and I'd have to fence it off to keep the dogs and wild birds out. Too much faff for me!

But you have inspired me to contemplate a small herb patch for next year and maybe a potted Rosemary bush.

Fifi I went and bought some Planting Bags that can be moved around the garden. Just fill with compost and seeds or plants and there you go.

You would be able to grow loads of herbs in them. Also Strawberries even cut slots in them and have plants sticking out the sides.

I plan on putting all sorts in them and putting them on my pattio bit that dog won't bother.

I've lots of plans this year to get ready for next year. It's all go in my house ready for Spring.

Photos next year. :P

Yes, ours grew very big, much bigger than the gardening books said. It must have been at least 8 ft tall because it towered above the top of the fence. We had it shortened a few years ago but that seemed to encourage it to grow even bigger and it bushed out before growing to 8 -9 ft tall again. The leaves are so prickly that trying to do any gardening near it could be rather painful. :P
Thanks to you mentioning your Mahonia still trying to grow I went and had a look at ours. Its sent up a few leaves so if the weather is OK tomorrow I'll have to cut them off. It was raining today and, like yours, our soil is mainly clay and quite heavy.

Your suggestions for shade plants have given me ideas of what to try next year but I'll give columbines a miss. We used to have some but the self set plants spread like wildfire and had reverted to wild forms which had flowers that were dull purple or dirty looking pink. They never ever prodiced anything more interesting, white would have been nice to brighten up a shady corner. In the past I've tried various "shade loving" plants with limited success. They only survived a year or two. :(

Your cat sounds like she was quite a character. :) We have the ashes from our cat buried in the garden, she has a rose bush over her too although we couldn't find one with a suitable name.
edit: @ Tuffty. Nice going getting the chilli seeds to grow. I had no idea parrots would eat a chilli.
A friend gave me 2 tomato plants. They turned out to be a variety that would be ideal for a pot or even a hanging basket as they mostly grew sideways. Had lots of tomatoes, a few ripened but don't taste nice. :(

Megycal, you may try some roses. Two strains that I would recommend, that truely bueatiful. Black Blood, which is a solid black rose with deep blood red on the petal tips. As well as Midnight Blue. A rich deep almost indigo blue rose. And speaking of roses, Fifi what strain is your climbing rose?

And as for tomatoes Megacal, when your milk jug is just about empty, with just a swallow left. Fill it up with water and use that to water your tomatoes with. It helps improve the flavor, as well as prevents cracking, and prevents tomato hook worms.
