We have several roses and a climbing rose called Compassion. Imo a rose isn't worth planting if it doesn't have a scent. We've got 3 bushes that were here when we moved in and we planted the climber. The others I know the names of are Margaret Merrill ( sp? ) which is a creamy white with a delicate fragrance, Just Joey which is peachy orange with a medium scent and my favourite...William Shakespeare which is deep red, has many petals and smells lovely. For some reason they smell stronger when its warm and sunny.
Black Spot is a problem here, even "disease resistant" varieties get it. I tried underplanting with lavender to reduce soil splashing up ( contains black spot spores? ) when it rains but it hasn't helped much.
