Not the norm as per slippery slope theory, the Australian parliament is to full of old dinosaurs for such a revolution (hence why we're so late and so hesitant to talk about marriage equality) , so much as I'm worried about them receiving less scrutiny by the opposition when they are tabled for fear of adopting that negative association of the 'no voter', and hence losing public support. In addition to this, I'm also concerned about the increased leverage that activist groups will have on politics on these issues now that they have a foot in the door.
Currently, I have two chief political concerns in Australia, one of which is the proliferation of leftist ideologies in state schools. It might make me a heretic to the cause to say this, but personally I'm not in favor of the complete erasure of gender lines or the full erosion of traditionalism, so my vote is for continued scrutiny of these policies in the face of a shifting political landscape.
I see. Well, again, I understand your train of thought, and while I don't think this vote is as powerful as you think, I guess that's a debate about a different topic to be had on a different thread.

Remember, if you are an Aussie overseas, you can and should still vote yes! If you have a permanent address, you should receive a ballot in the mail, as if you were still living in Australia.
You might even see this new ad if you are in the UK:
Actually, that doesn't make you a heretic at all. There are some on the left side who take things way too far, and don't realise that what they're working towards isn't equality, but what I call a social revenge by moving to supremacy for minorities. That's not what equality means, and it's why I see myself as a central-leftist.
There is no need to remove labels. If you don't want to be constrained by labels, ignore them. Continue to walk your path at your leisure. I myself see the left as having the correct intent and can move towards progression and improving the world, but agendas are there to be encouraged, never forced. And both the left and the right are guilty of forcing issues through extremes in which real life doesn't deal, and only end up hurting people and pushing them away.

On the topic of intersex, there was an article in WaPo magazine with a title that went something along the lines of of "We don't have a disorder and we aren't ashamed" -- pretty laughable.

I came to report the result of the Australian same-sex marriage survey, but Post has got here before me.
Well done, Australia. Let's hope the legislation is agreed on and passed quickly, so all the couples who have been waiting to be allowed to get married can start making plans!
