I only got interested in birds in the last 6 years or so, prior to that we had elderly cats so the birds stayed away. Although, when we were down to just one very arthritic old moggy, I put up a bird table and they'd come and feed whilst she lay around nearby - them watching her watching them.

I only really observe locals, and the ones who visit us (strangely, they largely ignore the dogs scuttling around the garden unless they come really close).

My happiest spy this year has been fairly regular visits from a Great Spotted Woodpecker and some fleeting glimpses of a Green in local woodland.

Heron.

Scary looking, huge, flying low, looking very Jurassic-Park and predatory. Wonderful to see but I know he's patrolling to see what he can steal ..... he had most of my fishpond last Spring and now I'm stuck with looking at a load of ugly net instead of a tranquil pool covered in duckweed and water lillies.
