When I worked in London there were a couple of guys who used to periodically patrol areas with their Falcons - to scare away problem pigeon populations.

Trouble was, the pigeons just used to clear off to a new area a few streets away ..... until that got patrolled so they'd move again ... rinse and repeat. Must have been a nice little earner for the Falcon guys though.

Wow I haven't seen this thread for years. I used to like checking it out to see the different bird life that exists in the UK because it is quite a lot different to what we have here.

In NZ we have quite a unique bird life as you can imagine. In fact before humans came here this was a natural bird sanctuary. There were only birds here, and no predators at all.

These was taken from the garden. I call it 'birdwatching a bird watching' haha. A woodpecker was frozen still on the side of the bird feeder, waiting for it to leave for at least 5 minutes.

Lens used: 70-200 F4, ISO was around 800 because it was overcast, shutter maybe 1/400th

I think so! we have a few Red Kites around here too but they're harder to photograph.
Here's a crop, in colour (not very sharp, but I did what I could with distance and 200mm)

This thread provided me with a lot of enjoyment when I was a lot more active with the birdwatching. Sadly other things started to take priority of my spare time so I was left with garden birds. I still feed them and still get the usual suspects. Now we've another dog, due to the loss of Jack our patterdale mid december. He was 16, so hadn't really been going for more than a short walk the past few years. I'll probably start taking my binoculars out and going to reservoirs and woods further afield.

I've kept somewhat up to date with what's been seen around the country via magazine and checking the sightings for the main reserve nearest to me.

Look out for Waxwings in the UK a good winter for them due to poor berry crops on the continent. Smart looking birds bit of colour very photgenic as they toss the berries up and swallow them.

Had a read through and I'd forgotten about how many different people posted over the years, and surprised at how many enjoyed reading it.
