Yep. Redoing their current engine into somehting more standard like Unity, Unreal, or Source (while not exactly making it run on said engine, just have the same editor and properties) would greatly speed up content creation to the point where they could make a quest like While Guthix Sleeps in a day (logic) or a week (Everything). In addition to making hiring new staff only need a week of orientation instead of months of training.

In fact it might be faster since the whole game is grid based, so instead of having to make a trigger volume, they just need to put a trigger space. Think a 3D RPG maker, or an old Sim City.

But from what I understand, their current system isn't anywhere near this level of efficency, and is probably running off some wacky system they used in the early 90s..

The longer that an "Upscale update" takes to implement, the deeper they dig into the old map. There is already a lot of quest areas and content built up, and more will be added as runescape gets older.

So in a way, it is a little similar to the old java client vs NXT. The old areas are already saturated and you can't add much more to the surface. Of course, Jagex can always simply create new areas such as the Eastern lands and ignore the main land, which can also work.

They could try to work on the main land in sections, similar to how Prif is in an entirely separate area. You see a small area on the surface map but when you enter, you enter a separate city area which is a lot larger inside.

Unfortunately this isn't actually how Prifddinas works - The city is treated as an "upstairs" level. You can test this for yourself - Go "outside" the gate guards, then light a fire or drop an item. Then pass them. You'll still see your fire or item. This is also why you can see Prifddinas from the distance regardless of your quest progress - It's an actual part of the overworld, not an instance.
The Asgarnian ale must flow.

I highly doubt runescape will ever be scaled up. Much rather I think that with the introduction of NXT the developers will be focusing on implementing new landmass to increase the scope of the game that way.

And what about the layout of that new continent, will the mountains over there be the size of a hill? Will we have "cities" with ten houses? That would be very disappointing especially now that we have the tech do be so much better, but they will probably have to do it to keep it in line with the rest of Runescape, limiting the new continents potential early.

Every word from Jagex about upscaling RS is years out of date. Its becoming more obvious this needs to be a thing. I for one am completely willing to suck it up and get fewer updates.

They need to scrap java/the idea of nxt or whatever and focus on rs4.

Fact is people are still playing this game on 12 year old hardware and people need upgrade if jagex doesn't push this forward this game will never advance to this day and age of technology.

You can get the new amd rx 480x for 200$ and cheep processors ect no excuses to not upgrade people this isn't the early 2000's era anymore this is 2016 and we see games with 550k polygons per character.

We should have been able to play rs on phones and tablets by now it would do this game to be wonders fully compatible would be amazing.

I'm not saying to push rs4 right now but in the future/near future this game needs it, to scale up to add so much to the content to this game so we can enjoy it for years to come!.

One more thing new servers and a fresh new game engine so we get 0.2 second delay and high traffic areas we get a solid 60fps. Thanks for reading!.

^ Agreed.

Personally I see this as more of a RS4 type thing, where the move from RS3 to RS4 might see a game world rescale combined with graphical updates to take advantage of NXT, a rework of the grid system, a rework of the game 'tick', the introduction of WASD movement, and other fundamental game engine changes. Improvements which have all been long called for by the community, and are necessary for the long term benefit of the game we all love.
–= MEGA Construction Rework =–

Freeform Buildings, Surface World Plots, Community Involvement, Environments, Skills and much, much more...!

Apparently Mod Osborne did want this in the Summer Survey, but was denied. He didn't get to talk about it on the Twitch stream this week, but he did mention it on Twitter.

I do like this idea, and I have my own perspective on this. It's a bit weird, though, since it might add needless complications. First off, I would portion together certain areas, and then consolidate them, like make Draynor a part of Lumbridge, to reflect the "Lumbridge & Draynor Tasks" so that they can refer to just Lumbridge. The Achievements collection system they plan to have next year may be a good way to help with this, if only to "map out" areas that belong together. Once each area is portioned off, expand those individually. Not as individual updates, though, because that would be dumb. I mean like expand Lumbridge, then expand Varrock, and so on, then bring all those areas together. The process is going to take long enough as it is. Why not break it down into chunks? Though that would probably take two years, and take away far too many resources. I think the chances of this happening would depend on how well expansions do for them next year.
