I think Runescape is trending the other way. With all the various teleports being added to the game, it's losing its "virtual world" character and it's close to turning into nothing more than a menu screen. Simply open the game, choose an area, and that area loads. No need for a world map, and no need to travel anywhere ever again.

i suggested this months ago and a J Mod seemed very keen in this concept, especially when I mention a massive amount of content is located on the f2p map, while less is located in dead area's such as ardounge and yanille and he/she said some content might move in the future
sadly, since then, our game map has been swamped by useless crap
Hey guys i got news for you, instead of waiting and pondering when this update will happen, try out lord of the rings online. It is free to play, and literally has breathtaking scenery(it is still a computer game). Also it is very lore based and has an awesome story line(lord of the rings). Also community is a lot nicer and larger, although it seems smaller due to the shear size of the world. Hope you guys enjoy!!

They'd have to develop a lot of content to fill the open space...there's too much open space in-game as is. There's far too many locations in the game that serve no purpose short of holding trees nobody ever chops.
I'm not against the map being made bigger by any means, just don't really see a point in it if all they're doing is stretching the map out essentially.
I have the opposite opinion, I fell like some area's are pretty cluttered and could use a bit of space.. Quest locations and such that used to be atmospheric...
Zamorock's camp, just recently, has crammed so many of supposedly 'secluded' quests locations in lumbrige swamp together >****;
Mostly I just chalk it up to whats called 'scale theory' that is that the actual world is much larger that what we see on the computer. IN the world there are hundreds of houses, misc stores, shoe shiners...ect ect and in the world distances are longer than a few steps
But those things are not important so we don't see them. It wouldn't be a very compelling game is it actually took a day's travel to get from town to town.
