Dilbert... cmon man. It's basically the equivalent of making a free to play world reset its ge and players have to start at zero. You're completely right in that players would still need to play within the confines of the free area - except that just literally mirrors the F2P experience in Old School, minus the reset economy and forced restart for players. My point stands. Fresh Start Worlds are a F2P experience. For many lapsed players who may have stuck to the free game for a long time, that might be enough to come back, start again, and maybe this time get hooked and want to go in on a subscription.

Again, I was only focusing on Fresh Start Worlds here - I would agree that Leagues and DMM are subscription locked. That's not really relevant to -this- discussion. Someone that decides to make a F2P Pker in OS or a new player fresh out of these worlds who still has some free quests and upgrades to obtain before hitting a content wall -certainly- won't care about those game modes.

As for Irons having some benefits and being picky and choosey about it? Yeah, I'm with you - that's pretty lame.

Irons - play your iron because it's a challenge and you enjoy it, not because you think it gives you a sense of morality.

Jazz,

Firstly, I do think it's important that Jagex themselves find it perfectly fine that FSWs may not appeal to you. You already heard it from me earlier that you aren't their target audience - but fear not, because Jagex isn't going to withhold the cosmetics from you just because you decide the mode isn't for you.

You can expect it to either come with a future game update, or perhaps a different alternative game mode that is aimed at existing players. We now have confirmation from Mod Miva that MTX won't come into play when Jagex -does- introduce the cosmetics again (Reddit).

---

I can tell you who I know -does- pay for the game already. Any game that has substantial micro-transactions will inevitably find players that find money to be no issue, and if the players like the product, they tend to spend quite a bit more than their peers. Of course, MTX sales are only a small plurality of RuneScape's income, but it's a substantial amount nonetheless.

The big-ticket item is getting players to pay a recurring subscription, or at the very least a hefty amount for Premier subscriptions that would provide players with many hours of gameplay already covered. This is where most of their profit comes from.

I've heard this "RuneScape is going to die" narrative for over a decade now, and while your suggestions that the game could become very lonely or we could one day see progression paywalls are valid warnings - I just haven't seen anything on Jagex's end suggesting that the end is nigh. And again, there have been Freddie Freeloaders enjoying the RuneScape experience since the game's arrival to the mainstream.

With a strong F2P pedigree, coupled with the fact that Jagex themselves do not have a company line about how Fresh Start Worlds should be implemented, I think it can be argued that FSWs aren't the hill to die on here.

Finally, would you disagree with me that making the mode F2P is a contributing factor to potentially attracting a lapsed player?

Aren't Laagues, DMM and other pay-to-play game modes part of OSRS? How can you tell us OSRS is free to play on one hand and refuse to admit most of the content including, of course, Leagues/DMM etc included aren't f2p on the other?

It won't matter what your personal opinion regarding f2p is, the most important thing is how new and long lapsed player think if Jagex's games are really f2p. Do they really think the games are f2p when they just leave Tutorial Island and see and try to pickpocket a man in Lumbridge and... bummer... you need to pay $12.5r? Do they really think the games are f2p when they are brutally stopped by Shanty when trying to cross to the Desert and maybe take a look at Tombs of Amascut?

Come on, don't just tell them OSRS FSW is free to play on one hand and the man they can't pickpocket and the desert sand they want to build a castle with are irrelevant on the other. :D

If the new and returning players happen to be players in games with similar membership model like WoW, it will be much worse as WoW doesn't call themselves f2p but still offer every player days of free game play in Azeroth until they hit the level cap.

Self-proclaimed f2p won't age well in this truly f2p era. The only reason why Jagex still call their games f2p is because regulations haven't got to that part... yet. But in the future when games are required to be enlisted on the likes of Askforgames.com, they will have to show exactly what are free or not to the consumers.

The fact that even Ironman asked for and are allowed to buy MTX benefits like Legendary Pets, cosmetics and such clearly show us MTX is no longer an issue to plenty of players in this modern gaming era.

You do raise some interesting points, and I'll try to entertain them as if I were walking in a lapsed player's shoes here. (Let's be clear though, a lapsed player may have expectations of a newer game in the industry -AND- will certainly have previous experience with RS at the same time!) For a straight up "new" player - I can see where the individual might think too much content is gated behind a paywall. (We were all new players walking up to the Taverley gate once!) When you're talking about a group, opinions are subjective after all. :)

I don't expect any player, new or lapsed, to want to jump into Leagues or DMM immediately if they engage with Fresh Start Worlds on a new account simply because that new account has so much progress it will need taken care of in the meantime. That's not to mention, that Leagues or DMM are aimed at experienced players who understand the mechanics of Old School RS in its present form and are trying to compete to be the very best. (DMM being more focused on said competitive aspect than Leagues.)

I also don't expect a lapsed player in particular to object with not being able to pickpocket an NPC or enter the Kharidian Desert right off the bat. They have already experienced playing RuneScape before, and probably already understand the concept of certain content being subscription based within the free experience. Raids are closer to endgame content, so there's no feasible way a lapsed player would want to experience ToA unless they are very recently lapsed players who have significant Old School RuneScape experience already.

With those examples in mind - how can I answer your questions?

Are Leagues and DMM a part of OSRS? - Yes, but it may distract from a fresh account's progress. Playing the seasonal content here is more of a dilemma for experienced players.

Can you call RuneScape F2P? Yes, even with some content pay-walled. There is no "hard-stop" in the experience, just restrictions.

Again, FSW is designed for new and long lapsed players. Jagex communicated with them in groups and through surveys and came up with their offer.

It seems extremely logical Jagex's targets don't think Jagex's games are F2P, otherwise they wouldn't be willing to pay membership to play FSW. To them, their membership give them the benefits of rewards and competitions, so they are willing to pay a price.

BTW, I believe DMM and/or Leagues is/are likely playable content in OSRS FSW running from Oct 2022 to April 2023. Don't say they are not distractions to free players in OSRS FSW who definitely can't participate. Don't say they are not relevant.

Well see, that's the interesting thing right? -We- don't know what results Jagex collected from the survey, so while you could be right, you could also be wrong. This is -further- made a wash by the fact that there isn't a consistent lean from Jagex one way or the other, as Old School's FSWs are Free while RS3's aren't. There just -isn't- a way for us to now what was exactly asked of those in the survey, and what their answers were, until Jagex chooses to share the results with us -or- the products become more consistent throughout the company line.

If lapsed players are -willing- to pay for RuneScape, then why have a Free experience in Old School?..and if they aren't, then why force them to subscribe in RS3? Don't tell me Jagex specified questions between the two games unless you have some sources to back it up.

If they can't participate in Leagues or DMM, then they can't be distractions now can they? :D It truly -isn't- relevant, just like how you won't need anything past the Shantay Pass to complete Dragon Slayer and wear full rune.

It is Jagex's business. If they don't go by what their survey results told them why do they sent out so many surveys? Of course, like all the other businesses who send out similar consumer surveys, we better believe they know best, especially it is their tens, if not hundreds of millions $$$ of they are investing.

"IS FREE-TO-PLAY AVAILABLE?
F2P is not available on FSW due to competition and rewards available."

Jagex clearly told us their stance on free to play or not here. RS3 FSW has competition and rewards, so are OSRS Leagues and DMM. That's why F2P are not available. OSRS FSW has no competition and no rewards, that's why it is F2P and Mod Markos said this is not even pollable.

F2P are taunted with membership content in their faces and that's not distraction? I don't know about you but this has been a big thing for many RS3 players, especially if they did Raffle the way OSRS did with Boss Bash Raffle - F2P can participate but only members can win prizes, I bet these RSOF and Reddit would be flooded with hate messages... but fortunately for RS3, they made Raffle membership only all the way from the get go.

Then why do people still play the Free game? Why have they for two decades now?

Why do people make ironman accounts on Rs3 to mine t50 ores all the way up to 99 Mining even though they've hit the content threshold? Why do people in OSRS pk with willow bows and rune 2hs with 99s in their offensive stats?

It is in fact possible for businesses to make mistakes, and it's possible that Jagex is deviating from the results in certain areas. When you don't see the results or the questions or anything, why should I place my faith in them? I'm glad you're optimistic, I see nothing that indicates I should be.

I'm already on record of thinking the listed rationale behind requiring a subscription is questionable, but feel free to keep quoting it to me if you'd like.

If Jagex wants me to trust them - flexing how much money they invest into their projects and simply existing isn't going to cut it. They need to earn my trust as a consumer, and it would help to be transparent. They certainly don't have to - but I'm not going to be taken for a fool.

In case if you don't realize RS3 has far less free players than members, unlike OSRS. Most RS3 players don't have a problem to pay, and that's good for Jagex's business as the fact is illustrated in their last Financial Report that RS3 grew by 18% in revenue comparing to only 6% from OSRS.

Jagex don't want you, just one person, to trust them in the forums. They want the 320 mil potential customers plus who knows how many more they surveyed to trust them with real money so they can grow by more than 18% annually.

I certainly won't dispute that - but there are still people playing the Free version of the game in a small plurality, and the example of playing an ironman account and trying to achieve 99 in a skill is just one of many ways players still enjoy the game without coughing up subscription fees.

Heck, free players may even willingly make puchases for Runecoins, Bonds, or Treasure Hunter even if they don't buy a subscription. Why? Because such payments are cheap one-time transactions that don't put them on the hook for regular payments. In that sense, the Free player community can actually -still- support Jagex financially.

When you combine the fact that at some point, if a player really likes RuneScape, they will probably inevitably subscribe or find a way to do so through someone purchasing a bond - and the fact that the current game allows players to make one-time purchases, you have yourself a healthy model that contributes some to Jagex' business.

Jagex doesn't want me, a paying subscriber, to trust them? Then why make the changes they made this week after taking feedback from existing players?
