MTX being optional in RS3 and OSRS is the only monetization thing Jagex is doing better than plenty of similar MMORPGs. Especially in RS3, if MTX isn't fair players won't be giving Jagex money and make RS3 grew 18% and then 20% the past 2 years.

Right, You keep thinking that way. Even if MTX was not fair to players and players screamed that this Yak track sucks, Jagex would not change the way they make money on it. The growth that you talk about is from pandemic levels and I suspect that will soon fall as well. More and more games are coming out that is better than RS and it slowing showing that.

On the flip side, it is subscription that is failing Jagex. Educated consumers will just look at what their $12.5 a month from Jagex, especially OSRS alone, and what they get from the other developers and publishers and easily tell Jagex subscription isn't fair value.

What does that $12.50 get most players on the RS3 side? We have no voice in what content comes out, We get ignored on all platforms when big pressing issues come up. Forums are nearly dead with literally no feedback from Jmods. Seems pretty dire to me.
Time to follow an trail of Treasure.

Who are the players screaming Yak Track sucks? I don't see many except perhaps a few who are always disinterested and/or not quit RS3. Even the usual few in the RSOF who hated MTX admitted this Yak Track is better because of various reason like no RNG, and payment is optional.

It is crystal clear RS3 has 21 years of content, far more worthy of a subscription. Besides, RS3 members can earn gp and buy almost everything MTX related in the game as well as Premier Club, which translates to far more value because OSRS Premier Club offers nothing else other than cheaper but the same cost as RS3.

"Sucky" Yak Track and 15 years of "dead" content in a immensely profitable living game growing at 18% and then a game industry beating 20% to a microscopic number of disinterested and quitting/quit players is far better than HUGE but dead games with negative growth, departing employees and no content.

Bleh, I liked what the Yak Track system was like before. Jagex had a winning formula offering cosmetics on the free track alongside the usual Treasure Hunter goodies. The new Yak Coin system feels like a step backwards toward the old Runepass, which even Jagex agreed was an abject failure. I still remember how much better the first Yak Track was over that shitty Fornite rip-off. Now, we've got a hybrid system going on that offers nothing as a taster. If this iteration of the Yak Track came out after the Runepass fiasco, I'd thumb my nose at it and refuse to participate.

At this point, I'd rather buy the cosmetics outright with Runecoins over buying the ability to grind for said cosmetics. Crap like this is why I've been playing games on GoG and Epic Games over subscribing for Runescape.

I'll wait and see what the New Year brings before I pull the trigger for regular membership instead of just using the prime giveaway I get for free off my brother. I really hope that whatever Jagex has planned for 2023 is worth it. Otherwise, it's back to GoG and Epic for me!

Edit: If a J-Mod is reading this, I hope that you can put some cosmetics back on the free track again. It'll make the Yak Track as a whole more enticing. If people really like the freely available cosmetics, they'll shell out for the stuff on the premium track to complete the look. I do like the introduction of Yak Coins, but it would be nice if they can exist in tandem with an option to purchase cosmetics with oddments. Let the players decide which they would rather use to pay for cosmetics both new and old.

I will buy membership, especially Gold Premier Club first before I buy RuneCoins, if I were a FREE player.

its almost like jagex wants to make money off the game it owns?

but yes its pretty awful, sadly there isnt much the players can do about it.
yak track is something we choose to do as players not something were forced to do.

That's what the membership fees are about - that's how they should be making their money. These MTX are ruining the game. I've bought premium membership for the past few years because I don't mind paying membership fees but I've stopped this year because it's getting more and more based on MTX and pay to win.

It's a pity to see the game being changed from the original concept of not being able to use real world money to gain advantage in the game.

Never mind, I suppose we've all got to move on eventually and, at some point, the only people playing the game will be the ones that only remember MTX being the standard way of progressing.

How is MTX like Yak Track "ruining" the game more when we are getting Yak Track totally free in RS3 with the exact same amount of money we pay to get Gold Premier Club as we pay to get 12 months of OSRS membership with absolutely no benefits?

Essentially, RS3 players are just paying the 12 months of membership as OSRS but we are getting heaps and heaps and heaps of goodies absolutely free and OSRS is getting nothing.
