The new mario game & watch and zelda game & watch are a great success. Why do we play and buy such old game? Because it's mario and zelda and because it's a game & watch and because it's nintendo.
Mario and Zelda are not dividual games. They are franchises. The new Mario and Zelda games aren't 22 y/o like RS3.
New games typically sell better than old games. If there was a new RS4 totally separated from RS3, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the former having a bigger success. However, RS3 is having the success of the hypothetical and non-existent new RS4 in 2023 now, that's what make RS3 so special.

I am not changing the subject at all. I am asking you if RSC is part of RS3? To me it is not.
Well then since EOC and it's "superior tech" wasn't released until 20 November 2012 you can't say RS3 is 22 years old. But actually, once again (this is becoming a habit), you are easily provably wrong.
Most of the items that existed in RSC also exist in RS3, using the same item ID numbers. The 18 skills it had are still here although two have been renamed. How about quests? lalala
RSC can die and so can OSRS shortly but they don't mean a thing to RS3 because RS3 makes content on its own and big money for Jagex with no dependencies to RSC and OSRS whatsoever.
RS3 can die while OSRS continues on, and considering the player count, that's much more likely. What was your point again?
RS3 is the composed of the past, the present and the future. Technologies are not the only strong point of its 22 years of existence. It also remastered a lot of old RSC lore. Even the RSC Doric is very different in 2023 RS3 now while the old RSC Doric died.
I still play RuneScape after 18 years because the game has not changed much when it comes to the core gameplay, simply put. The challenge to level skills is still there (if you decide not to use lamps and stars); quests are creative, challenging and fun; achievements are a great addition for unique rewards such as Completionist Cape and teleports.
Completing everything in the game as many probably know is going to take a very long time. Instead of for example implementing shortcuts or boosts to level up quicker for real money which many game developers and publishers would do these days for quick cash grab, Jagex have held true to keeping the game as unchanged as possible since the start. Sure Treasure Hunter exists which players can use to level up quicker, but it's not in any way required or forced upon players to buy keys using real money. Besides, the XP rewards are in my opinion not that high to be considered "boosting a skill".
Unlike numerous other MMORPGs that have changed drastically over the years who you can't seem to look at the same way as the first time you played it, RuneScape has remained largely unchanged and unaltered. That's why I think people are still playing the game, because they can still familiarize themselves with the game they once fell in love with.

New fresh consent for now and preparation for the future, plus remastered old content to guide the old players to present and the future. That's the formula for success.
There aren't many 20 y/o games with a sound player driven economy. A couple of very old 20 y/o MMORPGs like Tibia still survives, but there is not much about economy anymore. Botting and real world farmers from other countries has taken over.
I want to play a game with a sound, steady, player driven economy, so I still play RS3.
Because the 22 year old RS3 has a peaceful and understanding community. They don't rat out on each other, they play for fun cooperatively with each other.
Dramas, dramas, more dramas. I love dramas, in game dramas like the dramatic transformation of us into the World Guardian, and not the out of game dramas with trolls, gold sellers, real world traders, scammers, and other obnoxious bad apples.
RS3 gives me all the in game dramas, 22 years of it, so I keep playing it for another 22 years of in game dramas.
It's a game I've seen grown for over 20 years by now.
In my eyes, Jagex accomplished MORE as a company by creating RS than lets say Blizzards with WoW.
Yes, Blizzards is older and had (at the start of WoW) more experience with creating games than the Gower brothers had.
Yet, the Gower brothers created something from scratch just in their garage. A very succesfull game with fantastic content that is affordable and playable everywhere.
Blizzards allready had content created before WoW, so they could build from that point on.
The lore of RS is great. Everything you do is all your choice.
You're not limited in a certain way of play/quests/combat/...
Having this thought in my back, I've more respect for the Gower brothers and Jagex, for creating such a wonderfull game.
Are their other good games out there? Yes. But I haven't found any as good as RS.
