I have been playing ever since RS2 launched. It's more like a tradition. I know this game so well and there's always something that makes me want to play. Jagex has done good job for keeping the game alive for so long. All the other MMOs I played only 10 years ago have died off already but not Runescape

I like the direction of newer RS3 skills. They are getting less grindy with more ways to train that even players from other modern MMORPG and ARPG can adapt to.

We don't get to the "endgame" in a month like WOW or just buy story skips immediately to "endgame" like in FFXIV, but the variety and many paths to progress to the same neverending, and world changing saga episodically, and almost weekly, should bode well for the busy modern consumers, not only gamers.

This editorial from today's Eurogamer about RS3's Necromancy really speaks what I feel players play RS3 now:

"I’m interested to see how Necromancy affects the established RuneScape meta and what combat theorycrafters make of it, because this skill has the potential to bring a whole host of new battle strategies to the game. From what I experienced in the preview, the combat is very enjoyable and, while easy to learn, has a considerable amount of depth both in terms of mechanics and customisation. As a longtime player, I also found the combat refreshing - though that may be due to how it’s been a good 17 years since I was first introduced to RuneScape’s combat mechanics.

Personally, I’m looking forward to rethinking my long-established combat strategies and testing my Necromancy abilities, especially since conjuring the undead adds in new factors for you to consider. Not only do you need to decide which creature you wish to conjure, but when as they will only stay on the battlefield for a certain amount of time. Is it at the start of a fight to give yourself an edge or do you wait till later on in case you need cover to heal?

There’s also an element of resource management, as Ectoplasm is required for conjuring the undead, so you’ll need to take this into account when planning out your inventory. All of this comes together to create a promising addition to RuneScape 3’s combat, allowing more opportunities to experiment whether it's by focusing solely on Necromancy or incorporating into your melee, range or magic strategies."

Veteran players seem to have the like mind with me that aging but prospering games like RS3 flourish on game changing meta, mechanisms, customization, as well as resource management and strategies. We can't have Legacy mode forever, and EOC is 10 year old and getting stale.

For the unique open world completely player driven economy only few MMO still offer.

While many games have player trading nowadays, most of them have restricting rules limiting trading in certain ways like to specific group of players, game worlds, or co-op ways instead of the entire MMO community. Some others don't even have a true player driven economy as their developers favor certain player group or items even they proclaim their games' economies are player driven.

In RS3, this is a totally different story. RS3 players and RS3 players themselves drive the prices of items. The RS3 team doesn't dictate the price of any items. For instance, they won't just listen to certain players who may say Subjugation robe armours are too expensive so they have to artificially deflate their prices. They won't also listen to players who horde ECB and say their prices aren't high enough so they will have to tax resources like magic runes and flax and use the taxes to bail out ECB.

This article provides us some of the best games with similar open world player driven economy, and also tells us why this 20 year old game is on the top of their list:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/gaming/the-best-open-world-games-with-player-driven-economies/ar-AA1fx48Z

They also listed a few other games that enjoy the similar open world, truly player driven economy:

"Games like RuneScape, Albion Online, Guild Wars 2, and EVE Online have well-developed player-driven economies, offering opportunities for trading and financial gain."

I agree with their comments. Albion, EVE and GW2 are basically the few games that do truly player driven economy right. However, the problem with EVE and Albion is their pvp centric economies are controlled by clans. So that leaves us with RS3 and GW2 basically for the best experience of truly player driven economy without the needs of joining a strong clan.

Android Police has updated their list of best MMORPGs in 2023 two days ago. They now have this 22 year old RS3 as their #1 best MMORPG in 2023. Here is the reason:

"RuneScape is a regularly updated MMO that offers plenty of content for you to sink your time into. In recent years, it's pivoted to more active gameplay, cutting down on the grind that has characterized RuneScape for so long. It's a nice balance between grind and action, but overall it's one of the most casual games on this list.

RuneScape has undergone massive changes over its life, which is good or bad, depending on where you stand. However, if you're looking for a casual MMO that is forgiving to new players, you can't do much better than RuneScape."

https://www.androidpolice.com/best-mmorpgs-for-android/#runescape

They took all the words out of my mouth. I am fond of MMORPG because of the typical persistent world and adventures of this genre. I love to roleplay as the World Guardian, Duke of Forinthry, the necromancer savior of the Underworld a lot. However, I have a real life. I can't afford my precious real life to grind years just to meet Guthix and have him make me the World Guardian.

If you want a real life and also a causal pace-it-yourself classic MMORPG persistent and never-ending adventure at the same time, as Android Police opined, you can't do much better than RS3.

Thanks for the causal adaptation of RS3, we can become World Guardian in a matter of days. We are also offered many ways to pace our own adventures. We can even just AFK and still progress although slowly but we can do it on the side of our business and fascinating real life.

Recent comments of some streamers on why they were unmoved by money and stick with the RS3 they love to play speak volume.

TheRSGuy told us pretty much the entire story of why some RS3 streamers went to make content for OSRS - they are paid to do so. They made the offer to TheRSGuy buy he said no. I have to respect him a lot when he told us as long as he can make enough money to support himself from RS3, he will continue to do so.

Rest assured, we can't assume everybody to turn down $$$, so inevitably some RS3 streamers accepted the payment. However, it is the individual streamers going to make OSRS content more like a per diem basis. Their RS3 friends and family aren't going anywhere. It is refreshing to see the likes of the friends and family of the like of Maikerus continuing to play RS3 regularly.

RS3 has the 22 year old charms, that money can't buy.

Streamers make most of their money from advertisements placed on the page. The more views, the more $$$, the more players, the more views. And OSRS has many many more players.

But lets also assume you are correct, for once, which is pushing it. How could it be that OSRS can afford to pay streamers while RS3 does not? And why would they do so?

The 2nd question is easy, that's called marketing, they are advertising the game. It's the first that you are in denial about. RS3 doesn't have the bucks to do so cuz they don't have the player base that OSRS does. They just can't afford it.

OSRS numbers have been consistently going up over the last decade. RS3 has consistently gone down. One game is thriving, the other is slowly dying. Personally I hope they can revert that trend.

But acknowledging reality is the first step because you can't solve a problem if you won't admit that there is one.

Regardless what you try to deflect the topic, it is undeniable that players like TheRSGuy and Maikeru's friends and family are still playing RS3.

If you want to play OSRS, you can go ahead but this is not a thread to talk about why players play the 10 year old OSRS.
