Rest assured there will still be over 9,000 video games we can play if someday we don't see RS3 and OSRS. However, when the extinction of Jagex's old game will be extremely likely because of profitability issues. With that in mind, I probably will be more inclined to play games with solid long term monetization vision, and avoid pump and dump games only out for to let certain small group of players make money in the expense of the developers who put in real money and get garbage return.

What would you be doing in your free time if Runescape or Old School Runescape did not exist? Personally, I would be playing more racing games if both of these games did not exist.

Play a better game.

Explore the many other games that are out there that are not tied to anything Jagex has made or bought in recent years.

Sometimes we are a creature of habit and continue down the path we have known all our lives. Remove that and we see a whole different world than the one we have been stuck in.
Time to follow an trail of Treasure.

With this in mind, an outstanding example of games I probably will be playing in the absence of Jagex's current games, and excluding their new games, are all those games by Riot Games.

Riot is an amusing game developer Jagex and the other single product companies should admire and learn from. Everybody knew League of Legends the MOBA a decade ago, but knowing the risk of having a small portfolio of games, Riot took on a 5 year reform and transformed into a powerhouse with different big successful games in different genres, as well as kicking butts even in the movie and music industries. They are very wise not to dump all money on League of Legends. Instead, they make every game invisible at the same time so every game is a major success.

I will be more interested in their upcoming LoL MMO.

Console gaming (shudders)

Then perhaps you will be playing RS on consoles, as even when RS3 doesn't exist on PC and Mobile, they can still exist on consoles, especially Switch where RS3's touchscreen work on Mobile has laid out the foundation for port to Switch:

"We're definitely exploring other options, looking at things that it lends itself to well. There's definite complications with Xbox and PlayStation in terms of controls. But, things like the Switch, where you've got a touchscreen - we've done some of the groundwork there. So, it makes sense for us to to start looking into some of these areas as well."

I may also be more inclined to play new competitive Jagex games if they are properly funded, developed and actually rewarding.

DMM with $1 million real money cash prizes, Leagues with actual in game rewards instead of just worthless Hiscores etc sound cool... although this will certainly mean there will be proper and heavy MTX just like all the other successful competitive games in the real world.

I honestly have no idea what I'd be doing if Runescape never existed.

If it were possible to travel to a alternate timeline where RS never existed I'd totally love to try to find out but well, that's just not going to happen. At least not in my life time, I think.

I would definitely be paying more attention to Jagex Partners games, such as SCUM, as Jagex CEO has already been out to the media like MCV/Develop to show Carlyle Group's diversification vision and their future plans with SCUM:

"Richie has a chat with Jagex about their external publishing initiatives, and how games like SCUM fit into the wider plan for the company as it expands under The Carlyle Group. "

Ironically, Mod Pips didn't have a word to say about Jagex's original games like OSRS in the game's milestone 10th Anniversary. Well, at least we know a bit of the future of SCUM, even the future of OSRS remains... que sera sera...
