Watch out for the Ballista scam. The crossbow string, unstrung light ballista and ballista spring will value in trade around 21m. I was asked to fletch it for him, but then he convinced to let him hold some stuff, which was around 7m. But in reality the ballista pieces are worth around 1m? Heads up :) I try helping people out and get screwed.

Not sure if this is for scams and lures, but here are a few i know. May be duplicates, figure i may as well post them.

1) Buy XXX for me at XXX price.

Someone has a number of items, say summoning pouches. He will stick those in the ge, at say 8K exactly each. the person would then go around areas, GE mainly asking people to buy that particular items ( in this case summoning pouches) after he has told the person he has maxed out his buy limit. the line will then come along, like " just put in like 8k ea, i will pay more DW" and lo and behold, you buy his pouches, and he walks off with 20m. Happened to me once, kind of annoying, no idea if it still works but just be careful. A way to check this is to ask specifically why etc.
For example, if someone asks for unf potions, find out their herblore level, and check they are going to use them.

Another one that happened recently, which I can see working if one was tired, was when someone offers to buy something. They then ask if they pay in items, or shards or whatever, naturally, people choose shards, and that person will then go "damn they are on my alt, come and meet me in camelot here take this tele tab and they offer it to you. However, you put your item in the trade slot anyway, so be careful.

I know quite a few lures as well (a few happened to me, a few to a mate and i check anyway because the last thing i want is to be lured lol)

So large, yet so over-detailed and redundant...

The only simple 5 basic things you have to keep in mind are:
(first 3 in-game, 4&5 outside)

1.:
CHECK THE TRANSFER VALUE IN THE TRADE WINDOW BEFORE YOU ACCEPT

2.:
NEVER TAKE ANYTHING INTO THE WILDERNESS YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO LOSE

3.:
NEVER DROP ANYTHING YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET RID OFF

4.:
NEVER ENTER YOUR LOGIN INTO ANYTHING BUT RUNESCAPE.COM
(or legit rs-country top level domain)
5.:
JAGEX WILL ALLWAYS CONTACT YOU TROUGH YOUR IN-BOX - ALWAYS.

This simple rules encompass any kind of scam, no need to flesh out details on every possible variant.

(see later posts for more in-depth explanations and tips, iiiif you like/need reading them )

But first: let me emphasize the importance of mere COMMON SENSE:

JUST BE SCEPTIC
(aka "if it sounds too good, it's probably scam" )

Yes, you knew that already, but let's have a closer look:

e.g.: Let's say, there was some glitch/trick/way to generate money. What would happen?

In theory:
Word about the trick would spread, and more and more people would exploit it and generate humonguous amounts of coins. This would lead to a decrease of gold's value itself, i.e. inflation . People would start to pay more and more coins for stuff, as there are so many coins in the game, and everythings price would rise and rise. The result would be a huge fuss, people rioting, ranting, general chaos. But see below.

In reality:
Jagex would quickly find out, and just ban everyone who abused the glitch. Like they did a few times before. Or in the worst case, be forced to do a rollback (that means: reset the database to a point before the glitch ocurred, undoing anything bad that happened, along with anything else that happened during that time).

(So IF(!) some potentially REAL exploitable glitch ever ocurred and you'd get told about it: Hands off - You'd either get scammed if fake , or banned if real .)

Another approach is: would you do it in real life?

Let's say some complete stranger addresses you on the street and tells you that if you gave him 100.- he would give you back 200.-
Would you accept the offer?
Or let's say he told you he knew about some buried briefcase full of cash, and he'd show you the location for 100.-
Would you accept that offer?
- Most probably not. Think about why. Same goes for RS.

(Ok, in an rpg with magic going on, and essentially in a virtual setting, everything IS possible, but the point is: why would some complete stranger do this for you? )

Now the Details:

1.:
CHECK THE TRANSFER VALUE IN THE TRADE WINDOW BEFORE YOU ACCEPT:

No matter what scam/story the would-be scammer babbles, what does count in the end is the Wealth transfer amount shown at the bottom of the trade window before you hit "Accept". Never forget this. Never skip it. Check always.

EXCEPTION
: Be very cautious when buying cosmetic override/pet/animation/etc. tokens from an actual event, as their starting ge value most of the time totally differs from any realistic supply/demand driven value (at first!). Most of the time, the value is set too high, and will sink very fast as tokens are generated by the event, but the opposite is often true for rare tokens, mostly purple th event prizes - those are often undervalued.
(Many inexperienced players fall for this, paying like 3-5m for a token that is/will be traded for maybe 100-500k or so. Sadly it is/can't be considered scam, just an unfavourable mechanic. If you want to complain about, contact MOD TIMBO on his twitter account, he's in charge of/responsible for that :) )

Generally speaking, be careful about ge value when buying items that are:
- Newly introduced to Runescape
- Seldom traded
- Unknown to you
(Stick to buying the COW, not the Magic Beans some stranger offers you ^^)

So be shure to know what you are doing or ask a friend or even bystanders when dealing with such . (this rule also covers the "buy me XXX" scam)

Essentially: keep in mind that WORDS have a gold value of ZERO. So never pay for stories, rumours, tricks, exploits, generally any kind of PROMISE . "Legit" and "swear" are just WORDS. That is what "trust trade" means
