Wonderful thread! I once almost got scammed 12m by trading for a Bandos Chestplate, and the scammer tried to swap it for a Royal D'Hide Body. I looked at it and I was like "Lol noob." And he left. Pwnd.
Very nice thread! I think I've seen you before right in front of the Grand Exchange. I also oppose scams very strongly and report anyone doubling on sight. They should make a front page post saying that doubling will result in an instant ban or mute.
Nice proactive steps there
I see a lot of threads created in the General forums from those effected, therefore I have created this
Lure-Scam Be Proactive Jagex
and I have now added a link on it for your thread.
I've reread the guide since I last posted in 2012. I particularly like the examples of reportable text.
One scam you might consider adding, I'll call it the GE Limit scam.
The scammer tells you he's hit his GE limit and needs help buying a random uncommon item. He will try to convince you that the item is worth a lot of money by giving you one to sell in the GE and showing you that it sells for a lot. (The scammer is actually buying the item from you in the GE.)
The scammer asks for your help in buying a lot more of the item at extremely high prices. Once you have bought these items in the GE (from the scammer), he logs out.
To avoid this scam, don't buy items for people if you don't know what the fair market value of the item is. The GE is probably the single best invention for preventing scamming in the game, but it doesn't work so well for low volume items.
I have
never
trusted anyone who I thought may be a scammer. At one point, some guy who is terrible at convincing people to fall for their scams walked up to me in the GE and said I've been invited to some "elite clan" but I was already in a clan I liked. I told them this, but they wouldn't listen and said I should leave mine (I didn't leave my clan, obviously) and follow them. I asked where, and they said north or something like that. I kept badgering them until they walked off to another part of the GE. I followed them and saw that they were pestering someone else. I began following him and kept asking where he wanted me to follow him to. He gave up and used the spirit tree to escape. What an idiot.
Usually, if some guy says some kind of ridiculous scam, I report, follow them, and interrogate them about how they do this. I keep pestering till they get bored and hop worlds or log off.
Although, once, someone (no silver or gold crown) messaged me and said they have noticed my maturity and that if I go to the lobby, JaGeX will make me a p-mod. I reported them and didn't go to the lobby, obviously. I just want to know, how would they use that to scam me? They didn't mention any websites, they only said I go to the lobby. Why?
I once had a friend who tried to scam me a few times. They kept offering to double my money, and when I said the yew trees by Seers' Village were too crowded with bots, he suggested I go to a German world and chop them there. While I was in the German world, they offered to double my money again. Then there was a time where they were saying "doubling money" in the GE but they were doing the trust thing where they didn't actually scam people, but probably did later on. That person is no longer my friend, and probably banned.
I also had a friend a while ago who would go to the GE and do the flower gamble game (before it was rendered void due to no more coloured flowers). They would play and if they lost, they would hop worlds. They even once got me to pretend to do the flower gamble game with them, pretend to win, and act all happy to attract the attention of others who may want to play.
Some guy a while ago, in a free world, offered to me and a few others to compete in a quiz and whoever gets the most points wins 20,000,000 (or something like that). I competed because I wouldn't lost anything if they logged off before giving the prize. They did log off in the end, I was a little annoyed but not entirely surprised.
Edit: @Accomplishes: Sometimes in the GE, people have asked for people to buy a lot of items because they have reached their GE limit, and said they will pay for the items. I did this for them, but I was very pedantic and made sure they paid back every single penny, so the only person who would have a chance of getting scammed would be them, but I would never scam anyone so no one gets scammed.
