Not only that, but we're now aware that they have been persisting for months.

We've heard of one case here & clearly there must be many others or they would stop.

It's frustrating that these players seem to be able to keep creating accounts over & over for only the purpose of trying to scam Runescape members.

Is anything being done?

I spoke to a few other clan leaders on W83, and in the space of a few hours 3 clans were targeted as I mentioned. Also tweeted about this to raise more awareness in the community of this issue and it seems some people don't know of it and others have been targeted months ago.

A growing concern, to say the least.

The other concern is peoples willingness to hand over their items lol

Well Jamo, despite my constantly mentioning it in cc, posting on our rec thread asking others to do the same, & disallowing guests for the time being, one of my clan members was scammed for 10m :(

I hate that I can't get it back from that person, & that that money has only gone to encourage them to scam further.

& what's worse, despite my clanmate having that player still added, they could find no way to report them in game.

Can anyone tell me how they would report that person well after the incident?

Of course that's a worry. These people tend to be impersonating high ranks and as clan leaders we are showing our trust in a member by promoting them to Admin, so you have to somewhat understand the trust these people have in the impersonator(s).

It's also how the world is and we can't do anything to change that, some people are far more gullible and easily mislead than others and it will always be that way. The only thing we can do and are doing is warning every one of these scams.

The other issue is that Jagex can't take any action against these accounts with the reports, and most of them probably aren't getting reported, which is another thing we should probably stress is that if they get a message from somebody they need to report that player. I think the only immediate action that can be taken again is a change in font, even if it's just change the letter "i", "L" and "O" being similar to the number "0".

I'm sad to hear this. My clan member lost 125m, which was reimbursed to her from 3 of us, however you can see the type of money they are going for =/. 10m will just cover the cost of the name change, unless they're creating new accounts every time, so they won't be going for any less than 10mil that's for sure.

I just tested this by having another member delete me, add me to ignore list, turn his private off etc, and I was still able to report this player. As long as they've messaged you all you need to do is right click on the message/their name and there should always be a report option. If they haven't said anything but you're next to the person in-game, examine the player and in the top left corner there is a report button.

When this scam works, the player doesn't realize they were just scammed.

So how do they report them when they realize?

They dont, its clearly not possible to do after the incident has happened, they simply have to just stop handing over their items so willingly, its a pretty simple guideline to follow in not getting scammed.

Ah I understand what you mean now. They can't unless they realize pretty soon after and still able to scroll up, which is again why this change in font is so needed because the scammers and going to get looked into due to no report in more cases.

We do really need to emphasize on our clan members not handing items over so willingly like Scret said.

Ye of course & you & I plus everyone probably mention this in their clan but it isn't a solution.

How does Jagex suggest these players report the scammers for review?

Clearly the scam is working, to say "don't be so generous" is ridiculous, if there's a mistake it's in not recognising that the person isn't a clan member.

However saying "well just recognise it then!" isn't a solution either, as you get all types of clan members, some will be inexperienced, some will be from non english speaking countries & not do all the reading that's available, some will want to be helpful to senior members for all sorts of reasons, some will be tired &/or distracted, some just have a kind heart & don't often say no, at the end of the day we want the attempted scamming stopped instead of just making people tighter with their gp, yes it would be great if their was instant recognition that it isn't a clanmate,

& Jagex can assist with this by not making different names look identical.
