Now another update, that should be released sometimes soon - already passed the poll and everything:

https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/a=100/c=eo6JenAk6kQ/the-scar-essence-mine?oldschool=1

First of all - this update is an alternative proposal to significantly bumping up sold finished runes in order to make magic more viable for IM, which was a promise from their side, but using shops to fix glaring supply issues in the game just isn't the right way. I am fully with them for that matter.

Secondly - due to the attached costs the runes creation process is absolutely worthless for non-IM accounts - it's just cheaper to buy finished runes via the GE. For reference - those prices wouldn't sound too off in RS3, but runes are much cheaper in OS - especially following that guardians of the rift minigame I mentioned earlier, which basically dragged down the medium levelled runes even further.

https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Runes#Free-to-play_runes

Certainly fascinating from a gold sink perspective, but OS being OS once more - deliberately designed in some fashion, it just won't be of any use to regular accounts anytime soon (if ever - their economy in general is more static than ours).

What could be interesting again would be the essence creation process - they said you could mine 10k essences per hour this way in some rather higher levelled mining activity. Now again - not too interesting for regular accounts due to essences being worthless of course. But think of something like this in a RS3 context.

That scar essence mine was released yesterday and after unlocking it (since I haven't played the section of Desert Treasure II so far) I messed around a bit with it. Mining the essence junks gives the same token xp as mining in the rune essence mine does (which is a bit laughable to a lock behind the partial completion of a grand master quest and 64 mining (albeit you need 71 anyway, since this is the requisite of one of the pre quests) and it fills your inventory fairly quickly with tainted essence chunks, which are converted in a certainly larger number of tainted essences upon depositing them in a close location (an inventory full of chunks is several hundred essences - wiki probably can tell us the exact conversion, albeit it doesn't do at that time).

Since getting extract for increased rune production is highly detrimental for a non-ironman account I've taken a look at how obtaining essences would work. You could convert two tainted essences into one pure, which is directly sent to your bank - which means you can get several hundred pure essences by mining per minute. Since this isn't worth the effort either in this game my expedition into that mine ended after that of course.

You were right that adding rune essence to shops in large quantities wouldn't be the best solution. Essence should be made more efficient to mine and collect, like how daeyalt shards work.

After reading about OS content, I have a concept for a rework of the rune essence mine:
Instead of mining individual pieces of rune essence directly, players would receive larger chunks of essence. Players would place the larger rocks into a mechanical device at the rune essence mine. The machine would gradually process each large essence rock into smaller pieces suitable for Runecrafting. The resulting rune essence would be automatically deposited into a chute for collection. When finished, players would left-click the chute to teleport the rune essence to the bank.

If elemental anima stones are made F2P, I'd suggest making them more widespread. Getting them only from Crux Eqal and certain undead is pretty limited.

I realized that having access to the first three Runecrafting pouches on F2P would help to counteract economic issues, as you'd be making more runes even when profit per essence is slim.

Anima stones certainly are a bit like the wood spirits - the other extreme of the stone spirits - while those have brainlessly replaced every single ore - and especially bar - drop, the former are clearly intended to replace rune and logs drops - nothing happened. Anima stones scarcely were introduced in that bit of new content since then. Wood spirits basically are nonexistent right now, except for that once in a while bird nest.

I must say I would prefer to see either more commonly, but it's clear they don't want to repeat their stone spirit - and seeds (which was better executed, but heavily downgraded a lot of bosses) - fiasko.

Dunno why Jagex only seems to know extremes. They could achieve so much, but replacing those things on a few select loot tables. But yeah it's either brainlessly all - or nothing.
