Introduction

This thread describes the main issues faced by the game’s current tutorials and proposes solutions. The points below focus on Tutorial Island and Burthorpe but apply broadly to the whole tutorial system.

1) Efficiency

The tutorials overlap mechanically, making each other redundant. Burthorpe covers nearly all core gameplay taught on Tutorial Island. As a result, the combination of both is less efficient than either alone would be. Of the two, Burthorpe is better able to contextualise information due to its mainland location. Contrastingly, Tutorial Island is a one-off stepping stone separated from the rest of the game, forcing players to relearn on the mainland what was just taught to them.

2) Agency

While Burthorpe is more effective, much of its instruction is not essential. Burthorpe emphasizes combat beyond the point of necessity. The troll bosses are interchangeable, as are the mobs slain in preparation. It is unnecessary to force each new arrival to learn three combat styles and complete the same number of very similar sequences, when one combat style of the player’s choice would suffice. Allowing players to choose their own path as either a warrior, ranger, or mage - and create gear suiting personal preference - would dramatically improve the impactfulness of the experience.

3) Cognitive Load

A weakness of Burthorpe is the amount of information it presents in a short time. While eliminating redundancy would help to lessen the curve, there is still a great deal to learn. Burthorpe is rather specialised for combat instruction, an area in which it can excel. Likewise, other settlements with different strengths can and should play a decisive teaching role in other aspects of gameplay. Spreading tutorial content across a larger area would lighten the burden on any one location while giving each place the opportunity to shine. The result would be a broader, fuller, and more cohesive picture of what the game has to offer.

Lumbridge

Combat Training, Part I

Players practice using their newly made weapons. The player would learn about action bars, abilities, and adrenaline.

1. Talk to Captain Harlan in Lumbridge, north of the castle.
2. Complete basic self-defence training. Players must defeat a training dummy using:
-2a. Basic abilities
-2b. Basic abilities and a threshold ability
-2c. Basic and threshold abilities, delivering the final blow with an ultimate ability
3. Receive a reward from Captain Harlan. Players receive:
-Experience to reach level 5 in Attack, Ranged, or Magic
-Keenblade, quickbow, or mindspike (depending on which combat style was chosen)
-Storm drape^4

^4 Bladestorm, arrowstorm, and spellstorm drapes would be combined into one item. A right-click option would toggle between the Melee, Ranged, and Magic versions of the cape.

The following paths would be optional:

Slayer

Players receive their first Slayer assignment from Jacquelyn Manslaughter. This sequence introduces the Slayer skill.

1. Talk to Jacquelyn Manslaughter in the castle courtyard in Lumbridge. Jacquelyn introduces herself and tells the player about the Slayer skill.
2. Complete Jacquelyn Manslaughter’s combat challenge. This would involve slaying a small horde of creatures, such as spiders, ghosts, or goblins. A mini-boss version of the creature would eventually spawn. Unlike in regular Slayer, the player would have to defeat the super-creature in order to complete the assignment.
3. Receive a reward from Jacquelyn Manslaughter. Players receive combat XP, Slayer XP, and Slayer points.

Varrock

The player travels to Varrock, learning about trade and ways to interact with other players. This part of the tutorial would have a sinister undertone, as it is meant to prepare players to protect themselves from coercion and manipulation. The following sequence would unlock the ability to chat and to trade with other players.

The Grand Exchange, Part I

“Beware of what you give away. Trade carefully.” -Brugsen Bursen

1. Talk to Brugsen Bursen at the Grand Exchange in Varrock. Brugsen introduces himself and tells the player about wealth and trade.
2. Learn about the Grand Exchange. The player learns how to use the Grand Exchange to make trades.
3. Watch out. In this step, the player practices trading directly with an NPC. The NPC would trade an item to the player. A cutscene would then show someone discovering that they had been duped into giving away their personal belongings. The scene would end without clear resolution, with Brugsen saying that the culprit had gotten away and that it’s dangerous to take someone’s word at face value.

The Grand Exchange, Part II

“Don’t mention it. I’m not your friend.” -Grand Exchange Tutor

1. Talk to the Grand Exchange Tutor. The tutor offers advice to help you identify the culprit, providing examples of the following:
-Healthy and unhealthy interactions
-Effects and causes of unhealthy behaviour
-Signs of an untrustworthy person or message
-Limitations of rules and punishment
-Effective and ineffective ways to protect oneself and others
2. Learn about chat settings. The player learns what each setting does and how to adjust the settings to one’s liking.
3. Receive a final word of advice. Upon thanking him for his help, the tutor responds ambiguously and implies that you shouldn’t trust him.

Clans

The player learns about clans, including their functions within the game and how to join one.

1. Speak to the clan tutor at the Grand Exchange in Varrock.^5
2. Learn about clans. Players would learn the following:
-What clans are
-Main purpose of clans
-How clans are formed
-How to find and join a clan
-How to leave a clan
3. Optional: View the list of clans looking for players to join.^6

^5 An NPC at the Grand Exchange would perform all current functions of the Clan Camp south of Falador.
^6 A clan flag would be added at the Grand Exchange like the one in Burthorpe.

Burthorpe

Players make their way to Burthorpe to begin more advanced combat instruction. The following paths would be optional.

Combat Training, Part II

1. Speak to Major Mary Rancour at the training camp in Burthorpe.
2. Complete the first set of combat lessons from Major Rancour. These lessons would be structured similarly to the Combat Academy historically located in Lumbridge.
3. Receive your rewards from Major Rancour. The player receives combat experience for each lesson completed.

Slayer's Apprentice

1. Talk to Turael , the Slayer Master in Burthorpe.
2. Complete Turael’s assignment. Turael instructs the player to investigate the enchanted cave in Taverley to the south. He gives the player spiked gauntlets for protection. This sequence would closely follow Way of the Wizard but would be completed with any combat style.
3. Receive a reward from Turael. The player receives combat XP, Slayer XP, and Slayer points.

Yes, the new player experience needs an update.

The current version has many problems.

I really love the idea of spreading out the tutorial across the entire game map.

Have it begin in Explorer Jack's house (like in a pervious tutorial) because the player needs to know how to move the camera.

Necromancy exists, sure the new player won't be training the skill for a long, long time. However telling them only 3 styles exist isn't the way to go.

Necromancy, has a quest to teach the player about the combat style and the quest 'Kili Row' to get the player to engage with the combat style.

We should be doing the same for the other styles, looking at what Necromancy did best with it's tutorial.

Turael needs to be the one to give out the 1st slayer task. Just like in the current tutorial.

1) That 1st slayer task, is quite fun. Ariane has fully voiced lines and a fun fight at the end. Showing off this is much better than kill X. (Rewards for the slayer tasks is good xp bone)
2) Something happens to Turael during one of the late 5th Age quests, a new player's 1st encounter with him shouldn't be during that quest.
3) Turael is the best part of the current tutorial, thus we can't remove him.

I like the idea of starting in Explorer Jack's house. That fits with Jack's role and feels similar to starting in the house on Tutorial Island with Reginald.

Necromancy is more intricate than the other combat styles, at least in the beginning. Its complexity and backstory warrant thorough explanation, so the quests make sense as an introduction. The three original combat styles have less story behind them. They're also faster to pick up, as you don't have to learn how to conduct rituals in order to fight. I agree that players should be made aware of Necromancy fairly early. The Draynor lodestone area is a pretty good way to do it. It's a noticeable landmark and is conveniently located.

I didn't give enough consideration to the Ariane sequence. I agree that removing it would be a step too far. From what I remember, Magic Stick is very easy to defeat. I think he should be buffed up to at least the difficulty of Morningstar, the troll chucker boss, as Ariane helps you fight Magic Stick. While a boss fight certainly is more engaging than a generic "Kill X" task, it would make sense to introduce Slayer with something representative of how the skill plays. Slayer is more about hacking through endless mobs than fighting bosses.

Gelantinous abominations are the introduction to Slayer, while the Magic Stick (and Morningstar) fight is more about general combat. I proposed having to defeat an elite Slayer creature to make a somewhat more challenging Slayer tutorial. What I proposed with Jacquelyn serves the same purpose as the gelatinous abominations and Magic Stick fight.

Personally, I think it would be alright if Jacquelyn assigns the first Slayer task instead of Turael. I don't think that would make Turael less relevant. He would still be involved with the Ariane sequence and assign tasks in Burthorpe. Ideally, Taverley Dungeon would also be opened (and Slayer raised to level 20 on F2P worlds) to give F2P slayers a fitting challenge.
